im experiencing very slow transfer rates averaging 600 kb/s when transfering files. my PC has a compatible dwa-552 card and both the router and card have latest drivers / firmware. i have various changes on the router and to no avail. all devices PC / laptops running N @ 20 mhz / channel 11. i can see 2 other networks but very low signal using diff channels.
what setting might i be overlooking in the router that might cause this slow trans rate? incidentally, when i transfer .jpg or .pdf files the transfer improves to 2.5 mb/s. however, when i transfer a folder containing subfolders with diff file types the trans rate drops sharply to 600 kb/s. very strange.
all help is appreciated.

Make sure DWA drivers and any NIC drivers are up to date. Are you using single mode N or Mixed G and N on the router? Ensure WMM Enable is ON under Advanced/Adv Wireless. Disable WISH and WPS. I might try setting Auto 20/40Mhz or in your Rev A you might have a single 40Mhz option. No sure though. Not sure of the DWA can support 40Mhz, I presume it might though. Also is ShortGI/ WLAN partition and Extra Wireless Protection unchecked if you have these options?
Turn OFF any 3rd party security SW on the PC and test such as Firewalls and AV.

What FW version is currently loaded on the 655?
-
thanks for your response. both devices have the latest drivers and FW 1.35NA available. using mixed mode g, n, and b. i have dissabled wish and wps. the setting is on auto 20/40 mhz. i tested the single 40 mode and no improvement. shor gi and wlan partion are disabled. no extra wireless protection option. i turned off norton and speed improved to 1.5 mb/s.
ur thoughts.

Did the speed maintain when you did the file xfers using these new settings? 1.5mb is a good improvement.
I would change to mixed G and N only mode if you don't have any devices using B.
How far away is the PC from the router?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

Do you see this problem when you use LAN wired connections to the router from the PC? I presume you shouldn't.
-
i changed the mode as suggested to n and b only. the pc and laptop are only 6 feet from the router and signal is at 100%. disabling norton improved it to 1.5 mb/s. something in norton is affecting trans speed. the're 2 other routers visable but using diff channels and signal is poor. one is on channel 1 and other on 6 and signal is 54% on each. I dont know if that may be an issue?
i will try wiring the laptop direct to the router and see if it improves.
ur thoughts.

N and B or N and G? ???
I believe that 1.5Mb is a good speed now. I might try sending some larger files and watch the speed indicated. I might install DUmeter to get a more accurate and visual status as your xfer'g files. Also disable 3rd party security on the PC that your sending to or from to be sure. These programs will and can effect speed and performance of file xfers.

sorry i ment n/g. when disabling norton on both machines trans speed ranges between 1.7 - 2.0 mb/s i can live with that. hardwire into router did not improve speed. normally what speeds are folks obtaining with these routers?
-
It can vary, usually 1-2Mb on G mode, N mode usually from 2-4Mb upwards. It kind of depends on how it's all set up and working. Also the use of AES only helps as it has the best performance. One thing you can test out, turn off wifi security as a test to see how that works, then try AES only. Many things can effect file xfer speed and performance.
-
yeah 1.5 is still a bit slow for N. i expected more in the range of 3 mb. AES is on now as suggested. where is wifi security (tab) on the router? i cant seem to locate it.

Setup/Wireless/Manual

let me take a look. my eye maybe getting buggy.
-
Do your eyes need a FW upgrade sir? :o LOL
-
ok i located wireless securing and i have it set to WAP personal. however, i doubt the folks getting the higher speeds have this feature disconnected. dont you think? it exposes you to outside intruders.

Do you have WPA2?
Disabling wifi security is only temporary while your testing. Please turn it back on after.
Try WPA2 and AES only.
