Title: Why is my N not faster? new iphone 5
Post by: alphaae on November 03, 2012, 01:21:55 PM
So I had an iphone 4 and switched my signal to B and G only to get better service since my iPhone 4 only had G so not worth having N.
Speedtest.net is about 5.69mbps download.

I got a new iphone 5 and switch to G and N mixed thinking I'd get better speeds.
When I switched speeds stayed about the same.

I do want a mixed signal if possible for PS3, other iphone 4, and laptops that don't have N wireless.

Is that to be expected? or is something else going on that I'm missing?

I'm running Firmware Version: 1.35NA and Hardware Version: A4

Speedtest is testing your Internet Connection speeds, NOT you connection from the device to the router.  You will only see the speed that you are paying your ISP.  The actual connection to your ISP is always the limiting factor.

It's recommended to use Mixed G and N and WPA2 and AES only. If some of your devices don't support AES only option, try Auto TPIK and AES.

I phone 4 should work on N.

When using speedtest.net, it's recommended to use wired connections for testing to get accurate results since there are too many variables on wireless that wont provide accurate results like wired does.

@dave ok thanks for the ISP clear up I was under the impression speed test was the speed directly to the device.

@furry for some reason I had a lot of issues w my iphone especially video YouTube. Some times my wireless network was faster than the actual wifi in my house. That being said it would never be my wifi if iphone 4 had N wireless in it.

I would definitely try WPA2 and AES only. It should handle it well and has the best performance. I know my 2G iPhone did.

Sorry I haven't gotten a chance to respond busy week :(

@Furry what do you mean by WPa2 and AES? And how do I set those?
Also will that effect the other phones in my house and my PS3?

Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.

Need to test using WPA2 and AES only. This try switching to AUTO TPIK/AES

@furry Is there a way to specifically check the speeds to the device. I was using speedtest but according to Dave it only checks my network speed.

The other thing furry that is very slow is the YouTube streaming is extremely slow. I'm 5ft away from the router and videos won't load it just sits there and doesn't load.

You might try iNETQCheck Lite and see if that has any speed results your looking for on the iPhone.

The only think I check for is that each device is connecting at its maxium supported speed looking at the Status/Wireless page on the router.
