Title: Can't update to 2.03 from 2.02
Post by: leods92 on November 13, 2012, 05:23:56 AM
Hey, folks!

I've tried to update DNS-320's firmware from version 2.02 to 2.03 but I was not successful.
My unit shipped with the 2.00 and I updated it to the 2.02 with no problems.
The "loading" circle keeps spinning and the update doesn't pass the 0%.
However, the 30MB file was uploaded to the NAS as the browser shows the uploading status.

I've tried to reset to the factory settings using the GUI and tried to update the FW using cabled connection but still hadn't success.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance,
Leonardo.

Where did you download the firmware file (what site)?

Did you unzip the file from any compression package it was in when you downloaded? -- Please don't take offense to this question, as users periodically post FW update issues due to their trying to load the actual zip file.

I've downloaded it from ftp://ftp.dlink.com//Multimedia/dns320/Firmware/dns320_FW_203.

The file wasn't compressed so I don't think I need to unzip it.
Please, ask me anything; I don't get offended.

Any other ideas?

Thank you for helping me. :)

Try re-downloading the firmware from the FTP site. If that doesn't work, try downloading the file from the D-Link Taiwan site: http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/

Another point to consider. . . Some D-Link consumer devices have issues uploading firmware using Firefox. If you are using Firefox, you may want to try switching to IE for the firmware upgrade.

I'm running OS X so IE is not an option. :/
I used Chrome to update it but have just tried with Firefox, Opera and Safari: no success either.

The Taiwanese website doesn't include the final version just the beta one, is that safe?
One thing that surprised me in the TW's Dlink website is that they say version 2.03 is for the A2 hardware version; I believe that's a revision of the DNS-320. My NAS' hardware version is A1. Does that really matter? Are there different DNS-320 NASes?

Thanks again!

Save a copy of your configuration settings to a local PC and perform a factory reset using the Reset button on the rear of the DNS-320.  While the DNS-320 is powered-up, press and hold the Reset button for > 8 seconds.  This procedure will erase all of your user settings, which can be uploaded via the configuration settings file and should not impact previously formatted HDDs or data.

Before you perform the factory reset, save the configuration settings file and try to upload back into the DNS-320 it to ensure the file was created properly and works.

As always, when performing a reset or upgrading firmware, you should maintain a separate physical backup of your critical data.

Try to upgrade the firmware before loading your configuration settings.

I tried to reset the NAS using the button but it doesn't work.
However, I did reset successfully using the GUI interface but the firmware update still didn't work after that.
My grandmother has a Windows PC and I tried updating using IE 8 and it didn't work either. :/

Success!
I was trying to update the firmware without a HDD inside. I though it'd be safer.
Then, I decided to back everything up and put a HDD inside and it worked.
Thanks for the help.

So people with the same problem: firmware updates only work if a HDD is installed in the unit.

I'm curious, would the unit update correctly and still work if you say, had a spare drive with out any info on it, did the update, check for operation, then put the real working drive back in with working data?

I'm not sure.
The firmware is stored in the built-in memory so I think nothing is stored in the HDD.
Maybe they need space to store temporary files during the installation.
Otherwise, if there is no reason for a HDD be installed when updating the FW, this is probably a bug.

The HDDs are completely independent of the firmware, web interface, and updating process.  The DNS-320 stores firmware using internal memory, the HDDs are not used for temporary storage.

I'm at a loss here. Did you purchase your DNS-320 less than one year ago? If so, you can RMA the unit, although you would be responsible for shipping costs.

I bought it 1 month ago in Canada. Right now I'm in Brazil so RMA is not an option.
Anyway, I was able to update the firmware and everything seems to be right (except the printer function but I'll open a new topic for that).

Did you do anything differently that allowed you to finally complete the firmware update?

No. I tried many things the day before:
- Different browsers
- Different OS and computers
- Wireless/cabled connections
- Reseting the unit to factory settings
- Turning on and off the NAS

Nothing worked.
Then I went to sleep, woke up, installed the drive and the update worked.

I updated using Chrome from a wireless connected OS X computer.

Well, that's one mystery we won't be able to solve. I'm glad everything worked out.
