Title: Trouble setting up download
Post by: storemore on April 17, 2009, 02:31:10 PM
Since getting the DNS 323 a few weeks ago I have been trying to set up a scheduled download to the DNS from my desktop with out success.  I keep getting an error message (with no indication of where the fault may be):
Test result: Failure

Please verify the URL,DNS settings, and your account settings.

From the PC I can access the DNS; write files to the DNS; read the files; delete; etc.
PC is Win XP Pro SP3.  Router is an Actiontech VzMI424WR (Verizon FIOS), and works well with other PCs, wireless and wired (including Win 95 & Win 98).

Any help/ideas will be appreciated.

Perhaps I can rephrase:-

Can the DNS-323 be set up to periodically pull files or entire folders from a PC on the same LAN?
If so, how do I accomplish that?

Or, can files/folders only be pushed from the PC to the DNS-323?

I had this problem, it turned out to be the firewall. I am using Bit Defender, had to uninstall to get it to work, then once all was fixed, reinstall the FW AV software. Since then, all is ok. Although the downloading feature does not work that well, which is the main reason I bought this thing, a decent sync program works much better.

Gord
I've tried disabling the firewall to no avail.

What 'sync' program are you using?

I can't even get the dns323 to copy from volume_1 to volume_2 on my device, I get the same message.

I use robocopy to backup three computers to the dns323, I have setup a vbs script and task schedules on each of the computers to run over night, the tasks run a script from the dns323.

To setup this is what I did:

create a share on Volume_1 called Backups
created a folder under that called Robocopy
copied my script.vbs and robocopy.exe into the robocopy folder
setup a task schedule to run the script.vbs @ 02:00 on the first computer @ 03:00 on the second and @ 04:00 on the third.

this is the folder structure I get:

\\dns323\Backups\Robocopy\
                              backup.vbs
                              robocopy.exe
                                         \<computer 1 name>\Logs
                                                                    \<loggedinprofilename>\My Documents
                                         \<computer 2 name>\Logs
                                                                    \<loggedinprofilename>\My Documents
                                         \<computer 3 name>\Logs
                                                                    \<loggedinprofilename>\My Documents

I get a log file created with the date and profile name in the logs folder and the My Documents folder is synced.

If anyone is interested in the script or more info about this setup just PM me...

What is the URL you are entering?

ECF:

a typical failing URL is: \\192.168.1.2\\d\photos

Type: = Folder

Are you missing the \\192.168.1.2\Volume_1\d\photos

Does this folder require user authentication?

ECF:
it appears I made a typo in my previous response

the failing URL is: \\192.168.1.2\d\photos\
  where:  192.168.1.2 = desktop PC
             d = drive/partition on PC
photos = a specific directory on drive d

Volume_1 is not part of the source pathname

authentication should not be required
