Title: files and folders disappear
Post by: crjo2001 on November 14, 2012, 01:51:33 PM
Hello everybody,

this is my first topic here and English is not my mother tongue, so please be nice to me.

I'm experiencing a very frustrating issue with my DNS-325 : regularly, some files and folders just disappear. Suddenly, they're not present anymore on the filesystem and are lost forever.

I have no clue about why this is happening. I've noticed this issue several times.

Some details about my configuration :

Has anybody already experienced similar issues ? Any hint, clue ?

So far, I have this problem only at home, but I'm concerned because I bought another 325 for my office at the same time (user management is more complicated, with 30 users and different permissions) and I'd like to be sure that I can rely on my device !

Another issue I already noticed (maybe not related, but who knows) : sometimes, folders permissions are lost, they became invisible in Windows explorer, but still present in web explorer. By right-clicking on the folder (web explorer), I can restore permissions (or by using telnet + chmod) and problem is solved, but still, this is weird.

I'm planning to backup everything on another device and format the disks, but I'd like to be sure it will be enough to solve the problem.

Thank you for your ideas and comments.

In your situation I would start with creating at least 1 user for you both and assigning network share(s) with correct permissions to that user. Permissions you will want to grant, are fully up to you.
I've been running it from day 1 with personal accounts for my whole family and have never seen a problem like yours.

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion.

As nobody else seems to have the same issue, maybe the problem is not the server but one device connected to it.

I access files through 3 computers, 2 tablets and a multimedia gateway (WD TV Live).

Maybe the multimedia gateway is the problem, so I well create a user for the gateway with read-only permissions, and future will tell me if problem is sovled.
