Title: Scan "failed" even after replacing harddrive
Post by: gmolines on January 12, 2013, 08:55:49 AM
Hello,

Configuration:
DNS-323 with firmware 1.08.
both drives: Samsung 1TB
Raid 1, only one Volume.

I've had this unit for a couple of years, no issue so far. Recently I noticed that the right drive led doesn't light - or maybe not well. Performed the following:
1. Disk Tools -> Scan: result = failed (BTW, a more meaningful message would have been welcomed).
2. Back-up everything to USB drive
3. bought new drive (Seagate 1TB, as the ones I had are out of stock)
4. activated email notification (it was off so far)
5. inserted new drive in right bay
6. accepted to reformat it, then rebuilt the raid
7. while rebuidling, received an email saying that the left drive had failed
8. so far so good, no problem.
9. then noticed that the right light is in fact coming up, it's just very faint and I though I was seeing the network light through the right 'window'. It may have been this way from the beginning in fact...
10. Disk Tools -> Scan: still gives me 'failed' !
The unit seems to act ok, I've never seen an amber light, looks fully functional, except now I don't trust it anymore.

Did I change the wrong disk? How can I get a better diagnostics ?

Thanks a lot

Guilhem

It sounds more like you replaced a perfectly good disk - your first step should have been to check the disk status to see if both disks were being recognized.

The failure of the left hard disk whilst rebuilding the array after replacing the right hard disk is not good, the left disk is where the data was, so the rebuild has probably failed - since you have a backup of the data, what I would suggest is that you remove the drives and test them on a PC using the drive manufacturer's diagnostics, once they pass, reinstall them in the NAS and create a new RAID volume and restore the data.

Thanks for the tip. I wish the unit web UI said a little bit more than just "scan failed", as moving disks around is not a nice solution...
Will try your suggestion and keep this thread posted.
