Title: passive infrared or motion

Can someone explain which setting is best or both at the same time while using cameras for indoor recording?
I understand for motion I have to draw a parameter around area wanting detection, pir is picking up heat.
wouldn't it be the same as far as detecting someone in front of camera moving/

PIR should prove more reliable for motion detection. PIR measures heat differentials, whereas motion detection examines adjacent video frames and looks for pixel differences -- the sensitivity setting determines the amount of measured pixel difference required to trigger a motion detection event. The motion detection algorithm will interpret static or interference in the video image as something moving in the camera field of view and trigger a motion detection event.

I had it set on that, only because it didn't require a drawing line selection and wanted a full image detection anyway.
