Title: Best back-up method
Post by: sumfunny on January 19, 2013, 09:28:22 AM
I have two lenovo computers that I wish to back-up onto the DNS-325. I have tried the Lenovo rescue & recovery and windows back-up but they do not find the assigned NAS drives?

Is there a simpler method?

Are you seeking to backup your important files or a complete disk image (i.e. OS, files, etc.) for restoration?

Whole disc image mainly, but would also be interested in important files too...

You can create the disk image local to each laptop and configure the DNS-325 for a recurring monthly local backup (Applications > Local Backups). Just the same, you can configure an incremental backup for the directories containing your important files.

Is there any way to have the backup go directly to the NAS? I just have the one partition as is so I am not able to save the back-up onto itself.

Can you select the mapped DNS-325 Volume as a "Save To" destination on your laptop backup software? If so, there's your answer.

To minimize wear and tear on your HDD, I recommend saving a HDD image only once a month (at most), and save your critical files using incremental backup on a nightly basis.
