Is there any support for an external USB hard drive with the DNS-323.
If not - it would be a great feature for a future firmware update as great way to quickly backup the NAS.
Thanks,
Wayne

Out of the box - no - the USB port is for printers and UPS only. I agree, allowing an external disk enclosure would be a great feature.

Thanks for your reply! Your answer is what I expected. I also agree regarding your thought that it would be a good idea. So,how do we convince D-Link that it is a good idea?

I'm pretty certain they know that folks are asking for it - and I also know it's not a very difficult feature to add, although that is without considering the amount of flash memory they have to store the firmware.
How do we convince them to add it - I don't have an answer for that.

Boo, as in, I want the feature.

I'm sure we all do - and it's not that difficult to add - google is your friend.

Fordem is right, google provided several solutions to using the existing USB port with external HDD devices.
But........
it would be really nice if dlink would enable this with the upcoming 1.08 firmware

you can actually add that feature right now of usb drive support by using Fonz' 'funplug' package. I tried to install it, using the directions on the wiki page but my drive won't recognize the package. I'm guessing because I am using firmware 1.07 and not 1.05.
I don't know why D-Link hasn't made the modifications yet to the firmware to allow this support. I would SOOO go out and buy another d-link 323 to plug into the back of this device. I love it and I love the reliability!

Uh, the DNS-323 lacks a USB-B interface to link up to another DNS-323 without electrocuting it to death.
D-Link has some great, inexpensive, energy-efficient 5-port gigabit switches that would do the job better.

As a previous poster indicated, the fun-plug does provide this support. I have used it to connect a 1TB USB drive to the DNS-323 (which is 320GB) and have the DNS configured to backup the entire DNS-323 to the USB drive every two hours (daily cycle), daily (weekly cycle) and monthly (annual cycle).
This works because the USB drive is EXT2 formatted and I'm using rsync to backup (using hardlinks to avoid making duplicate copies of files). From my XP box the USB drive looks to be several TB in size... There's examples of these scripts around, and it was fairly easy to set up.
I have been delighted with my DNS-323 and the guys at DLINK are to be commended for their open attitude towards their hardware.
