Title: EMail will not work, What am I missing
Post by: Romasurus on February 02, 2013, 10:58:14 PM
I have managed to get this wireless router up and running with very little problem. I have been laboring for the past week on getting the email notifications to work. I have tried using both my GMail and my roadrunner accounts and neither works. I have set the email up with a separate outgoing and incoming email address but it doesn't work. I get the message that the email has been sent in the log file but nothing shows up in my email or it's spam filter. My roadrunner account address looks like
XXXXXX@wi.rr.com    smtp-server.wi.rr.com   port 25
Anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

In the server address, try just smtp instead of smtp-server.

SMTP Server Port:
Enable Authentication :

Verify Password:

I understand that as I also have roadrunner for my ISP.  But using just smtp instead of smtp-server also works, was just trying to suggest another thing to try.

Gmail isn't going to work because it's SMTP requires SSL which the router doesn't offer. As for RR, Im thinking  its a issue with username, but waiting on reply

Enable Email Notification: BOX CHECKED
From email address : romie@wi.rr.com
To email address: romasurus@wi.rr.com
SMTP Server Address: smtp-server.wi.rr.com
smtp server port: 25
Enable Authentication: BOX UNCHECKED
Account Name: romasurus   -  Box grayed out because enable Authentication UNCHECKED
Password: XXXXXXXX      -  Box grayed out because enable Authentication UNCHECKED
Verify Password: XXXXXXXX     -  Box grayed out because enable Authentication UNCHECKED

I have tried this with both the To & From addresses the same. And, both the To & from addresses switched with the appropiate account name entered.

I'm beginning to think it has to do with the periods in the address names.

Well first thing I would do is set up Outlook or some kind of email client on a computer on that network with the same settings, and send a email from romie@wi.rr.com to romasurus@wi.rr.com. If that goes through, then try again from the router. Its possible they require you to "pop" or check for incoming mail first before sending outbound email. Unlikly..but possible. If the email from outlook doesn't go through, then It could be a issue with emai being blocked before it even reaches your spam filter. Or something else easy to fix

Both of these email accounts are setup and running on Windows Live Mail, on my computer. That is where I got the settings from for the configuration.

1. Have you tried sending a email from romie@wi.rr.com to romasurus@wi.rr.com in Windows Live mail?

2. Try different SMTP addressees. First try smtp.wi.rr.com like Davev suggested. Next, call your ISP and ask if they have a "SMTP relay server". Its a long shot but they may. Last, try changing the SMTP server to something obviously wrong and see if you get a error in the logs. If you do, then you know atleast the server name is correct.

3. If none of that works then Im befuddled. Anyone else have any ideas?

Using the smtp.wi.rr.com server address, generates a Email sent unsuccessfully message in the log file.
Sending email between the two accounts romie & romasurus works fine.
This is one of those problems that has an obvious fix that I am just not seeing.

Well your ISP should not be able to tell the difference between a computer sending email and the router sending email. So only two possibilities I can think of is a firmware glitch or ISP is blocking the email for some reason. If that is the case its probably being tagged as spam at the ISP level. When your checking your spam folder, you just seeing what your email client marked. I would suggest turning the anti spam feature off. Or atleast marking it as spam.  More info here http://help.rr.com/HMSFaqs/e_rrmailSecurity.aspx#junkmail

Have you tried with using authentication?
