I've recently purchased a D-Link DIR-655 from a hardware store here in sweden
and the newest swedish firmware is 1.03.
Can I use the 1.05 firmware available for the US?

I use 1.04 from Canada works fine. But Dlink warns using "foreign" firmware. Svenskköpt router dir 655

It is also possible that it will cause the router to transmit on frequencies which are not allowed in that country and you might face a large fine and confiscation of your equipment (plus no one else will be using the 'wrong' freqs. within range of you).

Can´t be right. When ya update from the routers own webpage there is no issiues from where you fetch the fw. And you will notice it directly if it´s wrong frequenses, no contact with the clients. I can´t believe that a firmware changes frequencies.
But lets drop the question, the first author seems to care less ;)

I believe what they were referring to was things such as the US using the 2.4 Ghz channels 1-11. In the US using channels 12,13 and 14 may result in severe fines. In Sweden the available channels may be different and the governing body that controls radio transmission there may take offense to it. I believe the EU allows the first 13 channels. However I do not personally know what radio licensing issues may/may not exist in Sweden concerning the 2.4 Ghz band.
The available bands are one of the more important changes between international version of the same product (to my knowledge, I am not in Product Development). I believe that it is a strong possibility a change in firmware might allow the use of illegal and forbidden channels if done improperly.
Summary: IANAL but I would consult the local and foreign laws before using a foreign intended radio product (which is a best case explanation of what your router would be if you flashed it with US firmware).
Summary of the summary: like I said before just don't do it, even if it seems to work.

There are three (3) non-overlapping channels in DSSS, ISM, 2.4 GHz. They are 1, 6, and 11. Since DSSS is wideband, the center channel frequency only specifies the MIDDLE of the signal. When a network is using channel 11, their signal extends from channel 9 thru channel 13.
IT IS THEREFORE ILLEGAL TO OPERATE WITH A CENTER FREQUENCY ABOVE CHANNEL ELEVEN IN THE USA.
channel 14 is up to 2.484ghz, and legal to use in Japan and you can use 12&13 in Euro

Version 1.05 (beta 3 - 6. september 2007) - its working like a charm for my DIR-655 bought from Europe. :P

The biggest problem here is that D-Link around the world dont follow each other, which means that the firmware available in the US has far more features and updated software than that of the firmware in the UK (1.03)
It would be better if firmware was available worldwide at the same version, and then the use of other countires firmware wouldnt be an issue.
What is annoying is that the UK Firmware is still at V1.03

Different countries have different laws regarding channels as stated earlier. It would be impossible to have firmware the same in all countries as you would have to make the router features common to all countries taking away features such as channel 12, 13 (for Euro countries) and channel 14 (for Japan)

The routers are the same, its the firmware thats different, so it wouldnt be hard to achieve.

It seems that they have taken away the version 1.05 Beta 3 (1.05b3) - been on the danish site - but is now removed ???
Anyone knows why ??

As stated earlier, you are voiding your warranty if you use a different country's firmware. You update firmware at your own risk in that case.
