so, reading your comments I am setting mine up to do a remote bu to a nas at another location and have built mine as raid1. is that overkill? if i do it as raid0 i will then have 4 tb to use but my backup is only a 2tb drive. not sure that is going to help me?

Where data security is most important, backups are more important than redundancy. When availability is critical, redundancy may play a more important role. Additionally, the two also work well synergistically. It's all about your comfort level and how well you want to protect your data.
