Hi there. Hoping someone can help me out. I have a DSL connection at our home office. I have an actiontec modem (the one supplied by our ISP). If I connect direct to the modem I get good upload & download speeds when I check with speedtest.net.
However as soon as I introduce the router and ethernet switch, my internet speeds fall to almost 0.
I have had the DIR -645 router for about 6 months and it has worked good. I just bought the 16 port switch today and installed as the 4 ports on the router aren't enough for what we will need in the future. I have tried eliminating the switch and going straight back to the router and it is slow. I have tried changing which port on the router runs to the switch (1,2,3,and uplink) and it makes no difference. Is there some sort of configuring that I need to do to get these to work together? if so then why won't they work individually.
I use a DIR - 645 Router plugged into the modem to provide wireless to our office. Plugged into the router I have I have a DES1016 16 port switch plugged in, and from there the computers.
Right now I am running 4 computers and a printer off the switch. When I did the speed test the computers were sitting idle except the one I was using to test. I also tried the speed test from all the different computers to make sure it wasn't a computer issue.
I am able to work my way around an network clumsily...enough to usually get things to work eventually, but this one has me stumped. Any help wold be appreciated

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm)
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)

Hardware is v A1
Firmware V1.01
Located in Winnipeg, MB our ISP is MTS and the modem is a Actiontec...I am not sure about the exact model (I'm not at this location right now) but I don't believe it has a built in router as it is just 1 line in from the telephone jack and 1 ethernet port out.
MTS has an MTU of 1492...that's all the info I can dig up before I get back to the office.
Thanks

Let us know the exact model of the modem when you can.
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Try Traffic Shaping ON as well.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

************Where do I do this
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.

When I do a speed test now I am getting about 4.5 Mbps down and .15Mbps up according to speedtest on the 2 machines that are plugged in.
On the wireless machine I am getting about 0.5 Mbps down and 0.15Mbps up according to speed test.
However when I actually use the internet it is as slow as could be, almost to the point of being unusuable. Also I don't find the machines that are plugged in any faster at all when using the internet even though the speed test indicates I am getting 9x faster download speeds...
Thanks again!

I just looked up the modem from the model number...and it does have a built in router... How do I see if I am having a double NAT problem?

Are these wired LAN computers or wireless? Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Is this your Modem? GT701D (http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=186#.UTTNK5YoESU)
If it is, it has a router built in I think.
