Title: Upnp AV streaming .ISO and .MKV files
Post by: alios on May 02, 2009, 08:18:38 AM
hello

is there a way to make my dns323 to stream .ISO and .MKV files ??

the i.diot that is me, didn`t read the FAQ before buying a 500$ media center device who can stream movies (besides .avi and .mpeg)

i have the 323 for almost a year, every time there was a new firmware, i had update it with no problems.

but now i`m just really in trouble, if i can`t stream these types of files, i`ll have to return the demand a refund for my media center device

thanks

You're right the 323 can't serve up .iso & .mkv a-la UPnP.

I ended up replacing the built-in UPnP server with TwonkyMedia Server 4.x for NAS.  That works great with nearly every format out there.  But it does not do .ISO.  I don't know right off hand of any that do, right out of the box.

MediaTomb **may** serve up .isos from what I've read, but you have to be able to compile in some features - and if you're not familiar with compiling a program / hacking the 323, it's probably not worth the effort.

you`re kinda right here, i don`t have experience in compiling unix, but with some knowledgei think i can  follow step-by-step... i think

the problem is that i have 7 days left to return and get a full refund from my media center device

and i gotta do something: try to make it work, or return it :)

UPnP AV Server in Conceptronic CH3SNAS (which is basically the same hardware as the D-Link DNS-323 and has veeeeeeeeeeeeeery similar firmware) supports FLAC, IFO, ISO, MKV, M2TS, VC1, DIVX, AAC, M4A, SUB, APE, FLV, DV (added in 1.04 firmware). I don't understand why D-Link doesn't want to add such functionality :(

my guess is because there are other devices in d-link`s offer... such as the DSM devices...
this streaming of iso and mkv files made the last days very stressfull for me

L.E. omg.. i just googled the conceptronic device... it`s the same as 323... hardware and software.

and you say it supports FLAC, IFO, ISO, MKV, M2TS, VC1, DIVX, AAC, M4A, SUB, APE, FLV, DV ??  :o

then regardless to dlink, i had made a bad choice when buying dns323  :-\

DSM's don't strem the content... they just recieve it.

Can we use that media server on DNS-323? Any way to load it, much like the Twonky or Mediatomb?
Or maybe even do a full FW reflash, if that's what it takes, even though due to HW drivers (possibly customized to D-Link's preferences) this may not be possible?

Thanks.

[edit] Does anyone know his/ her way around this: http://download.conceptronic.net/GNU-GPL/CH3SNAS/1.04/   ??
Hopefully some guru can advise if and how we can make use of this.

The admins don't like us posting "how to hack" topics on here.  In terms of what steps you need to take to get twonky working:

1)  Disable the builtin UPnP server on the 323
2)  Install ffp0.5
3)  Log in via telnet
4)  Make sure to create a user login
5)  Download TwonkyMedia Server for NAS 4.x (the 5.x branch crashes on the 323)
6)  Follow their instructions on how to install it
7)  Use the Twonky web interface to set up which folders are to be shared

You'll have 45 days to evaluate Twonky and figure out if you want to keep it or not.

Remember:

1)  google is your best friend
2)  wiki.dns323.info is also your best friend
3)  don't ask users here technical questions about hacking, refer to forum.dsmg600.info instead

(here's to hoping I don't get b1tch slapped for giving away too much info)

Thanks for your response.
I will check the resources you mention, even though it doesn't look like they address my question.
Maybe I was not clear - I was referring to getting the Conceptronic media server on the 323.
The Twonky - that is known and indeed easy to Google it.
But Google did not return any proper info on my question - getting the Conceptronic AV server onto 323.

And if D-Link has an issue with my request - apologies, if you had m2ts and mkv support I guess I would not ask the above. BTW, I am an ex-D-Link employee, so hopefully you'll close your eyes if this is against the forum policies.

Thanks.

[Edit] I have just checked the links - sweet. Interesting info.

The DNS-323 will support .ISO and .MKV in the next firmware. Beta code is currently available if you want to try it our on the child board. TVersity will allow you to playback .MKV on you XBox360 just be sure to enable Transcoding on the software.

What you mean? I can read mkv files off my 323, but my 360 can't decode it. Do I install TVserty on the 323?

Yup. Xbox360 doesn't support .mkv. Unfortunately you will need to install TVersity to your PC to transcode the files so XBox can play them.

Ah, got us. But im trying to avoid using a htpc. Bacically mkv files aren't supported and I can't also use media center.  Fine, I'll use "video library" feature instead. Is there anyone of associating thumb nails with in "video library"?
