Title: Can you access the NAS if there is a router between your PC and modem?
Post by: Rakward on March 15, 2013, 12:06:59 PM
This is my setup at home.

I can access the D-link Nas fine from Computer 1 but not from Computer 2 because there is a router in between. How do I solve this problem? Reconfigure the router or the NAS in some way?

I recommend that you bridge the ISP modem and use the extra router as your main host router. Connect Computer 1 and NAS to the main host router. This will eliminate any double NAT conditions that cause problematic connections with having 2 routers on the same line.

If the main host router does not have additional LAN ports, install a external Gb network switch to provide you with extra LAN ports. This also helps eliminate any un-necessary router processing that is not needed for large file xfers between computers and NAS.

Might look like this:
ISP MODEM(Bridged)>Main Host Router><Network switch<>NAS and PCs connected to switch.
                                                    >For any game consoles, connect directly to the routers LAN ports and not the network switch.

The problem with this is how to put it into practice, the PS3/Computer2/Digibox are all at the same location, there is just 1 USP port in the wall so that's where I need my router. Computer 1 is in a bedroom(LAN cable is built into the wall as well) and the NAS is in where the modem is. I could hook up the NAS to the router but then computer 1 can't access I guess.

Is there no way to reconfigure the router for this? Buying a switch is also gonna cost me money, the NAS and its HD already cost enough.

You could turn your Router into an AP, turning off any NAT and DHCP on the router and let the Modem/Router handle your routing functions.

This is my modem(ISP is Telenet in Belgium)
http://www.icbn.com.tw/product.php?act=view&no=10 (http://www.icbn.com.tw/product.php?act=view&no=10)

(found this through the partno. on the modem, on Telenet's website it also states "Motorola SBV6120E Docsis 3.0", see https://www.telenet.be/mijntelenet/activation/activate.do?action=selectModem&modemId=17 (https://www.telenet.be/mijntelenet/activation/activate.do?action=selectModem&modemId=17)à

This sounds good, but when I google "access point" I get only wireless guides, I assume LAN cables will still work on it yes?(The digibox doesn't have wireless capability)
