Title: 2540B Technical Manual?
Post by: rljames on March 28, 2013, 06:44:34 AM
Standard "User Manual" (ver 1.0, 8/2/2010) is OK but many topics, settings etc. could use additional explanation.

Is there a more in-depth technical manual for the 2540B DSL modem? Or some sort of "general" DSL setup white paper or similar?

Other than what is included in the UM, these documents are set up for the simplistic average user and probably with the frame of mind that users just want simple information about DLink products and the easiest way of working with them. Any more details or the needs of advanced users are probably not going to be fulfilled by this. Any in depth information is harder to find and sometime not available due to some information being confidential or proprietary with DLink. Sometimes by doing a search on the web can result in finding information that others have posted or by 3rd party businesses.

If you have questions please post them for what you are inquiring about or I would direct your questions also to phone support, ask for level 2 or higher tier support.

I've tried D-Link technical support, both via eMail and phone call, but it's just too slow and painful.

For instance, I sent a simple eMail request (w/product S/N) to determine Hardware Revision of my new 2540B because the back panel info label where this info is supposedly located is covered over with additional labels. Three eMail exchanges later, over several days, and I still haven't received a reply that is on point. Last response was; "Find the hardware version on the router logon screen".

Talking to live support goes a little better but generally requires very specific question. Same goes for web searches.

I was hoping to sit down and read about the various options and configurations beyond the "Use default setting..." that appears so often in the UM.

Thanks for the reply.

The Mfr'g label should not be covered over with any other labels as this is crucial for troubleshooting information. It's possible that this unit is a refurb or some used or modified modem, and if so, I would attempt to replace it with one that has an official label that is not covered over. Was this modem purchased at a local retail store or online?

One way to tell Revs of HW is by the FW version. Usually v1.## means Rev A, v2.## means Rev B and so on. I only see Rev A and B for NA DSL Modems for this model. I attempted to look at the Rev A site however I'm getting an error on that site. Rev B has v306041G00 listed. What does your modem FW version report?

However DLink does not handle some FW versions or coding of the FW as there are some agreements between DLink and ISP service to let the ISP handle and maintain FW updates for some modems. I don't think this isn't the case here.

Purchased online as new from Newegg. Additional labels, with text and barcode, indicate MAC, S/N and F/W, just not hardware revision.

Firmware is "NA_1.00".
