Title: DIR-855 reboots every few hours
Post by: nrms on May 05, 2009, 12:39:55 AM
Any idea why?

Over the past couple of weeks it has taken to rebooting itself two or three times a day. In the log it says:

[INFO] Tue May 05 05:27:09 2009 WAN interface cable has been connected
[INFO] Tue May 05 05:27:07 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected

at the time of reboot.  But no-one has touched the cable, so it must be an intenal disconnection, what would cause this?

Well it is still doing it and seems to be getting worse. Noticed that it had rebooted again this morning and looking in the log, it seems to have spent most of the night rebooting itself. Typical behaviour seems to be:

[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:39 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:28 2009 Bringing up WAN using DHCP
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:28 2009 WAN interface cable has been connected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:26 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:19 2009 Bringing up WAN using DHCP
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:19 2009 WAN interface cable has been connected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:15 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:08 2009 Bringing up WAN using DHCP
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:08 2009 WAN interface cable has been connected
[INFO] Fri May 15 03:15:06 2009 WAN interface cable has been disconnected

I REALLY would like to know what is causing this.  Does anyone else see this behaviour?

Check your wireless environment.
- Cordless phones
- mirrors
- microwaves
- electronic devices using the same channel

Try changing the wireless channel to something static and less crowded rather than having it set to auto

could the unit be overheating?

I stuck extra rubber feet on the bottom to raise the unit about 8-10 mm over the wooden desk it stands on.  I also updated to the latest EU F/w (1.13) and reset the device. SO far so good, it hasn't dropped th WAN interface since.  Seems cooler under the unit now, so it does make me wonder about it getting too hot before...

i have the same problem, the summer time has started and the
temperature is higher, i tried to put the router vertical, to get
more air, but it still restarts couple of times a day.

any idea how can i make it cool down ?

nice irony  :)

BTW, mine hasn't rebooted in 3 days since raising it off the desk with deep rubber mounts.

Well, the weather has got a lot warmer here last 2 days, and the office is hotter than it was. Guess what - the DIR-855 is rebooting every few hours again.  The unit gets very warm to the touch.

Now, I seem to recall the DIR-855 was advertised & promoted as an ECO friendly product (ie low power consumption). One would expect therefore that the unit would not get so hot.  Unless poor design causes the unit to retain more heat than it should.

So - is my unit faulty?  Is there a hardware/design problem or what?  Whatever is causing this reboot every few hours is very annoying and shouldn't be happening in my opinion.
