Title: 2540B Login Accounts?
Post by: rljames on April 04, 2013, 05:40:37 AM
Login screen appears to offer a "user" account. How is this managed and is it secure in "default" mode?

If enabled, allows a the "user" to review the modem settings and does not have the ability to make changed.

And where do I "enable" the "user" account? Not even mentioned in UM.

On DIR series routers the User account is managed under Tools/Admin. You might check on your modem if there is a similar setting.

I might be missing something but AFAIK and can find, a "user" account is not covered in the UM, various firmware configure screens (other than Login -> "Username" drop-down list) or online "Help".

The log in screen for the modem, does it have a drop down menu or just a blank entry box for the NAME? Can you input something here or are the two names?
Nothing in the modems UI regarding user accounts at all?

Just a fixed drop-down list.
Here is the verbatim Page 13 UM coverage;
"3. Enter your user name and password, and then click OK to display the user interface. Note: This manual has been prepared using the admin user name."
That's about all...

Update -
Appears that password "user" allows login for mystery User account.
Firmware options for this fixed, built-in User login appear to be some subset of the Admin privileges but still seems to be places to make changes and/or stop services.
Password change for this account doesn't appear possible.
(I've *tried* repeatedly to call D-Link Technical Support for help with several issues and haven't had much luck - Either can't get through or placed on hold for 20+ minutes at which point I give up...)

Thanks for sharing the info about the USER account.
I know, I've waited longer then that to talk to someone. Eventually I got thru. Takes patience. ::)
