Title: DNS-323 doesn't save admin Password across reboots anymore.
Post by: Scottk on May 05, 2009, 12:17:07 PM
Hi,
I am on DNS firmware version 1.06.

I was doing some recabling last night, and allowed the DNS-323 to lose power a few times without cleanly shutting it down.

It somehow reverted back to no password, and now, when I try to set the password, it actually works, until a reboot.

Once the reboot happened, the password reverts back to no password again!

Thinking that the unit's flash was messed up, I even reflashed the firmware to 1.06 again, figuring that would give me a "virgin" state...

Yet, the same problem happens...

I can change the password WHILE the unit is running, and that works fine.
But after reboot, it always reverts back to no password!

Has anyone seen this before?
Any thoughts of what I could do to make things work again?

Do you have this problem with any other settings?

Hi ECF!

Thanks for responding.

Yes, it looks like it is a problem with any/all settings...
It appears that none of my settings are being saved across reboots...

I tried setting the Time Zone to Central, setting the time statically, and turn off NTP...
It saved fine, and worked.... Until the reboot.

On reboot the unit loses all the settings, and goes back to Pacific Time + NTP enabled...

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Thanks!
Scott

Looks to me like a defective unit. Have you tried configuring the unit from another PC?

Hello,

Indeed, Scottk, it seems that we have exactly the same problem.

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5422.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5422.0)

In case of reboot/shutdown no settings are kept anymore. I started to have the problem with FW1.06 and it is still here with FW1.07b1... I am not sure it is due to the FW though.

My unit's hardware is of revision A1, and would be 2 years old in August. What about yours?

Mine is actually nearly brand new.
I bought it early January I believe.

My revision is B1.

Thankfully, mine is in warranty still, so I will probably be RMA'ing mine soon.

Lucky you. I am afraid I will have to give it up for something else... Pity... Though, I'll try and change the battery. I don't think it will be more harmful.

Just a small up: DLink in UK (I guessed) advised me to go back to factory defaults. So I did it. I rebooted. And it seems now that the settings are saved and used. Thumbs up... But still, that doesn't explain where the problem is. =(

Technically it does:   Corrupt configuration.

Oh, if only it were that easy!

I reset back to factory defaults a number of times. Hoping that it might resolve the issue.
Heck, I even reburned the firmware (1.06) and reset back to factory defaults.
My problem remains!

I called DLink Tech Support tonight to get an RMA...
Whew, painful.

They told me I HAD to upgrade to 1.07, which of course is bogus, since the only change there was to fix compatibility issues with the Hitachi drives...

I also found it interesting they would require that, since, as we all know, the DNS-323 can do VERY BAD things to our drives when hopping from an old version of the firmware to a new version...
ie, it could reformat them!
You have to wonder about the thought process there about that suggestion...  Sure, it makes sense if I was on 1.01, or some old version of the firmware where a bug like the problem I am having might exist... But when you are on 1.06, and 1.07 has 1 change completely unrelated to the issue... You have to wonder if the script they read from might need to be updated a bit...

Anyway, I yanked my drives, upgraded to 1.07, and tried the whole thing over again.  Still broken as expected.

Thankfully, calling back after upgrading, they passed me to Level 2 tech support, and they agreed to RMA the unit...
One interesting thing...  She asked what kind of router I had...  Weird question, as my router would have no bearing on this issue....  It would make sense if I was having intermittent connection problems... But what bearing does my router have on the DNS-323 not saving my settings?
(Besides, I actually have a DLink 1G switch between my PC and my DNS-323 anyway!)  ;)

Oh well, RMA was given, so I am happy!
When I get my new unit, maybe 1.08 will be officially released, as I am kind of excited about some of the new features in there!
