Title: Western Digital Green 2 Terrabyte hard drive ? Can I use in any way?
Post by: StackYa on May 06, 2009, 04:42:32 AM
Hi,

I have two WD drives, each one 2 terrabytes. Can the dns323 utilize it, if i reformat to 1.5 terrabytes each? is there going to be a firmware upgrade to support full capacity sometime soon?

Thanks

Are you having a problem formating to 2TB?

I currently have 2 of these drives, and I am wanting to buy the unit. I am wondering if I format the drives ntfs on my pc or something for 2 tarabytes each, would they work if I placed them in the unit together to give me 4 tarabytes total. Would that work? I am just wanting to know if this unit will work with my drives and if so, how would i best use the drives in it.

Thanks in advance.

The DNS-323 will require you to format the drives in the unit for use. If will format the drives using the EXT2 not NTFS.

As far as I know you should not see any issue using these drives and formating them to the full 2TB's.

Yes.  If you're streaming HD video wirelessly, you may have issues.  HD is best when wired directly or at least over a 802.11n wireless network.

Streaming has little to do with the file system format. It's more of a network-related issue.

In fact, the slowest component dictate the maximum speed available... This is thrue for 95 % of computer system (hardware, software, Modem speed, internet speed,...)... It's the same from the road.. if you have 2 old grand-papa driving at 60 KM/Hrs on the road "side-by-side", you can have a BMW, or more, you will be "jam" behind them... because the slowest dictate the maximum speed !

in the NAS, it's 99 % of the time the network !

The choke point isn't the network or you would be getting 1000Mbps or a large fraction thereof to this device.

Unfortunately, it is not that simple.
