Title: DIR-835 has good connection, but no internet.
Post by: mudthirsty on May 24, 2013, 08:47:08 AM
Just looking for help here.  I was told to check the forums, and I couldn't find a good thread to start, so I've started my own.

I've had a d-link DIR-835 for about 2 months now, and everything was running great.  However, a few days ago I noticed there was no internet in the wireless router.  (Yellow flashing globe).

My internet works from a cable into my modem, as my pppoe was setup in the modem, not the router.  What's the first thing I should be checking?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Reason for the Yellow Globe is that it has probably lost communications with the modem or the modem has lost communication with the ISP service. Make sure your ISP service to the ISP modem has a good clean signal and is to spec for the ISP modem. Have the ISP physically check the cables going to the modem. Remove any t.v. line splitters if your using cable ISP services as these can cause noise and interferences and reduce the signal. For DSL ISP phone lines, ensure the cables are good and filtered correctly. Have the ISP check to make sure the phone lines are set up well and there isn't any cross talk problems on the line.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0)
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. Tools/Time.

I have tried different cables, and we do not use the land line for phone at all, just internet.

Thanks, I just changed all the settings to match above.  Only thing I couldn't find was the WISH, and WPS under Advanced, and the WAN Port speed.

Still no internet. I appreciate your help with this!

Is the Internet globe on the front of the 835 yellow. I presume it is. If it is, means that the ISP modem or router is not set up correctly.

Is this your ISP modem?
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-8840T (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-8840T)
If so, then this modem has a built in router already.
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/).
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the DIR-835 web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

I would contact your ISP provider and get help on setting up the ISP modem in bridged mode or use the ISP modems DMZ and put the IP address the DIR-835 gets from the ISP modem in the DMZ.

Yes, that is my modem!  And yes, the globe is yellow and flashing on the 835.  After working on a few things last night, my internet on my modem was no longer working either, which makes me think it was a problem with the modem.  I just bought a new modem, and will hook that up tonight.  I will let you know how the 835 does with it.  Thanks!

Ensure the phone lines are set up well, signal to the ISP modem is good and the phone lines are filtered correclty. Ask the ISP to help you with this. Get a new modem too if you can.  Keep us posted.

I installed a brand new modem out of the box.  Setup pppoe on the modem.  I cannot get the internet to work on the modem.  I called my ISP, and they told me to setup a new network connection via my control panel, and to plug my computer directly into the modem and to forget about the router for now.  I entered my info and made a new network connection, clicked connect.  And it connected, and the internet works great.  However, the modem internet light is still off.  So I have internet on one computer.  My old modem had four outputs, so I re-installed my old modem, and connected through my network connections, and that works as well.  I have a second computer in the next room, so I ran a cable from the modem to the next room, and the internet didn't work.  So I had to setup a new connection on that computer as well, which worked.  This doesn't seem like the correct way to do things, and my ISP pretty much said "well, your internet is working, everything else is not my problem".

Of course.
Did you get the same model modem or different?

If the PPPoE is on the modem then to use the 835, it sounds like you'll need to install a external GB network switch to allow for more LAN ports.

What is the model number of the new modem? I'll look up some info on it. Can the modem's web page be accessed?

If we can access the modem, and bridge the modem, and if you have the PPPoE account Name and Pw info, then we can attempt to bridge the ISP modem and put the PPPoE info on the DIR-835. Or use the DMZ on the modem if it's configurable.

The new modem I purchased is a TP-LINK TD-8817ADSL2+ ETHERNET/USB MODEM ROUTER 1PORT & 1USB PORT.

However, I have switched back to my old modem because it has four ports, and its a TP-LINK SOHO TD-8840T, ADSL2+ Modem Router - 4-port 10/100.

Here's a link to their website.

I see on page 24-25, there is a bridge option under WAN Service Setup.
http://www.tp-link.com/Resources/document/TD-8840T_V4_User_Guide.pdf (http://www.tp-link.com/Resources/document/TD-8840T_V4_User_Guide.pdf)

You could attempt to give this a try. If you can get the modem into bridge mode. Save settings. Turn OFF the modem. Connect your PC to the DIR-835 and ensure the Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Type is set for PPPoE. Input your PPPoE information into this section, user name and PW. Ensure that "Always On" is selected. Save Settings. Power OFF the DIR-835. Leave your PC connected to the 835. Connect a good working LAN cable from the ISP modem to the WAN port on the 835. Check to make sure the correct port is used if the modem is in bridge mode. I presume #1 should be used. Power ON the modem and let it sync and come to ready. Then power ON the DIR-835. Watch the internet globe. If everything is done right, the globe should turn Green on the 835.

Keep us posted.

If we can't get the bridge mode to work, I see there is a DMZ option on the ISP modem that we can try next.  ::)

Did everything you said.  No go.  I can't connect to my 835 with a cable, just by wi-fi.  I think all the ports are shot.  But, still no direct internet from the modem.  Unless I setup the network connection via the control panel, and ask Windows to dial in.

Can you connect to the DIR-835 with a LAN cable and PC and see the routers web page? Ensure you are using a good working LAN cable, swap out for a good known working cable. You can ping the routers IP address using a command line.

What is the default IP address of the ISP modem? I should be 192.168.1.1..just to confirm with you.

Ports don't usually go bad.

You are setting the PC's networking to Auto Obtain IP addressing so that it gets the IP address from the 835 right? Test with a different PC to be sure if you can.

Hmmm...well, you could set up the DIR to connect to the ISP modem and see if the ISP Modem is seeing the 835 and handing out a IP address. It should see the router and give a IP address.

Maybe we can use teamviewer and I can remote in and review your settings with you if your interested...

The ISP modem is 192.168.1.1, and router is 192.168.0.1.  The 835 is set to auto obtain IP.  I've got two new cables, and will give them a try next.  Where would I see that the ISP modem is seeing the 835?

Look at pg 29 of the UG. Start there and do a reservation for the 835 on page 30-31. If you can get this far, go to page 39 and input the IP address you reserved for the 835 here in the DMZ.

I think it's time to call in some help on this.  I cannot connect to the 835 at all.  I've tried four different cables, and every port in the back, and from two different computers.

And you can get to the routers page at all?
Try doing a 30-30-30 reset?
Let me see if I can find the info on this.

If this doesn't work, Hmm...Well, I would do this, if you can't get to the routers page at all from any PC with any cabling, possible the unit needs work. I would either return the unit to place of purchase if you have this option, if not, I would recommend that you phone in to D-Link support, don't email. Please phone. Tell them everything that you have done up to this point and ask for an RMA.

I think you've done all you can. I can't think of anything else to try.
If you've ensured connections and different PCs and can't get to the routers web page.

Ya it's supposed to. I'm hoping that the 835 will recover. I would test the 835 out with out being connected to the ISP Modem. Just use a PC and see if you can get to the routers web page. If you can, then there could be a problem up stream with the ISP modem.

Let me know if you can get internet. Maybe I can help you via team viewer some.

Looks like the 30-30-30 reset didn't do a thing on the 835.  Same settings are still in there.  However, I CAN connect/login to the 835 via Wireless, but not cable.

I've now gone back and tried with the brand new modem I just purchased, but I am still not getting the internet light lit up on the modem nor the router.

Could it be a possible IP address conflict?  I tried releasing and renewing, but nothing.  Could it be a TCP issue in one of my computers?

With the TP-link modem, when I look at the settings, it says PVC4 - PPPoe - Down, with no IP addresses registered.

Try changing the 835's router IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.35.1 and see. If your not getting any green globe on the 835, means it's not getting a correct connection from the modem.
Were you able to put the 835's IP address it gets from the ISP modem into the modems DMZ?

You might check out another 835 from the store and see if the new one is doing the same thing. If it is, then there might be a problem in configuration and cabling.

No, I've decided to eliminate the 835 for now, and am focusing on just connecting the modem for now.  Here's what I get when I run a ipconfig /release and an ipconfig /all.  I can't connect to the modem now.

I see that the ISP Modem is at 192.168.0.1 I think. Is the MODEM bridged and you set up the PPPoE on your PC?

Right now, the modem is setup for pppoe, but to have internet right now, pppoe is also setup on my PC.  I only get the internet through the manual connection of PPPoe on my PC.

If the modem has the PPPoE, then the PC should be set up for automatic IP addressing and does not need the additional PPPoE configuration...I believe. The PC should get a 192.168 address from the modem if you are using the modem as your main host router. I wonder if the PPP adapter is interfering with the connection to the 835.  :-\

Ok, so how do I go about re-setting this up for auto IP on my PC?  Because my ISP had me set this up, and basically said, "ok, the internet works, the rest is your problem".  Is this why the internet isn't reaching the router now?  IP issues?

You need to record or write down the current settings on the PC for that PPP adapter. Once you have that secured. You need to remove that adapter connection or better yet, disable it by right clicking on that adapter found in Control Panel/Network And Sharing Center/Change Adapter Settings. There should be a couple of adapters listed here. One should be the PPP adapter, the other should be a LAN adapter and possibly a Wireless. Right click on the PPP adapter and left cllick on Disable.

Then you should be able to connect to the ISP modem or give the DIR-835 another try. Wired or wireless.

Ok, in my Network Connections settings, I have the PPPOE that I had setup, Local Area Connection, and a 1394 Connection.  All are connected, and all are firewalled.  I will disconnect the PPPOE one?  Not sure where to get the PPP adapter settings.

Yes, right click on the PPPoE listed there and left click on disable. It should just disable it and keep windows from using it. I would disable the firewall in windows as well. It's not needed.

Post by: mudthirsty on June 04, 2013, 05:34:04 PM
Ok.  When I disable it, I lose the internet on my desktop.  I can only login to the modem using a cable from my laptop, and can only login to the router using wireless from my laptop.  My desktop will not connect to neither the modem or router.

When I am connected to the modem with my laptop, and can access the modem's webpage.  I click on the Windows "x" for internet, and it shows up with "There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server configuration".

Did you want to try team viewer?

1. Disable Tru Gigabit Routing under Setup/Internet/Manual.
2. Ensure your Windows networking adapter is set for the main default onboard adapter. There may be others and inter-configured and could be causing problems on wired LAN connections.

I should be home in about an 1.5 hours. I we can get on TV and see if we can figure this out.

Any custom networking adapters or network configurations on your system besides default?

Yeah, smoke was coming out of the dvd drive.  Shut it off and unplugged it for a while.  Seems okay today.

I now have the modem working.  It was an incorrect VPI number.  However, the wireless router still has the flashing yellow globe.  And I am only getting internet when wired to the modem.

Ok, no is the ISP modem in modem or bridged mode?

Modem is set to PPPoe.  And the router I can't seem to do a factory reset.  I've tried the 30-30-30, and leaving it unplugged for a few days, and my settings are still saved when I turn it on and login.  Also can only login to the router using wireless.

And this is on different PCs? Ensure your PCs have there firewalls and 3rd party security disabled temporarily while you are setting up the router.

This is crazy having 2 835s doing the same thing. Really think something on your system is happering the wired LAN. Did you check out the other post about a similar situation?
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=54340.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=54340.0)

Maybe we can have a look using Teamviewer at your network settings on your PC.

Ok, I managed to do a factory reset on my DIR835.  I have not set anything up yet, going to start from square one.  Modem is setup and working with my pppoe.  Just need the wireless router to work now.  I'll take a look at the other thread as well.

The thing that is confusing me is the fact that I cannot connect to the DIR-835, unless I do it using wi-fi.  If I config the modem with one computer, I should probably config the 835 with the same computer, right?
Title: Re: DIR-835 has good connection, but no internet.
Post by: FurryNutz on June 19, 2013, 07:57:26 AM
Technically you should, however if there are custom network settings going on as his that one thread or something on the one PC is not set up right, could cause problems. If the WiFi is working to configure and connect to the 835 wirelessly, I would presume the the LAN wired is working and something is not connected right.

Can you ping the IP address of the router at all or get any ipconfig /all information when the wired LAN is connected? Or does it just say media disconnected.
Title: Re: DIR-835 has good connection, but no internet.
Post by: mudthirsty on June 19, 2013, 12:44:56 PM
I believe it was saying media disconnected, but I eventually got it to register an IP address.  I'll ping it in an hour or so, and see what results I get.
Title: Re: DIR-835 has good connection, but no internet.
Post by: FurryNutz on June 19, 2013, 01:10:19 PM
Media Disconnect usually is bad cable, mis-configuration of the NIC, or LAN plug is bad however I doubt that since you seem to get an IP eventually.

Keep us posted.

Ok.. the first ipconfig /all is just using the modem directly.  The second ipconfig /all is modem to wireless router.  And my computer plugged directly into the wireless router (835).

And you did a reboot on the PC or did a ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig/renew after connecting to the 835?

Do you have any other adapter icons under Network settings on the PC?
If your using DHCP on the PC then it should be getting an IP address from the 835.
And you swapping cabling to be sure?

Yes, lemme try that now.  Going to re-boot, flush dns and ip renew with the 835 hooked up.  I even have a brand new cable that I will use, just to be sure.  Shutting down, back shortly.

I have some time to review your PC settings and router settings if you can get it connected. Even if you can't get the 835 connected, I could review your PC settings. Ensure the LAN cable plug is fully seated and you hear the click when you push it in to the port plug.

It's definitely plugged in tight, with a click!  My computer keeps saying my network cable is unplugged, while it is plugged into the 835.  The other cable from the modem is also plugged into the Internet port on the 835, and I still have a flashing yellow globe.  I cannot access the 835's login page via a cable on both PCs.

Here's a question.  If I had logged into the 835 previously via one computer, will the 835 ONLY allow that one computer to login again, blocking out other computers?  If so, does a factory reset clear this?  I'm thinking a factory reset next, and I'll try to wire my current PC to it, and see if that allows me to login.

No any pc should gain access.

So if you disconnect the isp modem from the 835 can u get an IP?
You say the Isp modemis connected to the ethernet port...this one of the lan ports or the WAN port?
Title: Re: DIR-835 has good connection, but no internet.
Post by: mudthirsty on June 19, 2013, 04:05:25 PM
Yes, I get internet if I remove the 835, and plug directly into the modem.  Which I keep doing to come back onto here.  lol

The ISP modem is normally plugged into the Internet port (yellow) on the back on the 835.  Then there are four blue LAN ports (1-4) and a USB port, which is unused.  That is all.

Ok,

Only couple of items left to do,

Could try this since your ISP modem has a built in router and is handling IP addressing and routing:
Turning a router into an AP. (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0)

Upgrade FW  to v1.04. Please follow this:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0) If you can get a Wired connection to the 835 from your PC that we used to do this. Normally I wouldn't recommend wireless however maybe we could try wireless if wired can't get connected.

There a store up there that you can get a different model DIR series router to test out?

I would presume if the Turning Router into an AP doesn't work either, then there is a problem with the 835. I wish I was in the same town, would like to get my hands on your network. LOL.

Have a good evening.

Up and running!  I bought a little more expensive one and when I went to go to the wireless router page, it came up and said there was an IP or DNS conflict, and to click next to correct it.  I clicked next, got to the admin page.  Setup PPPoe, since before turning it on I changed my modem from PPPoe to Bridge Mode.  Now I've got internet wirelessly throughout the house again!

I'm almost willing to bet now if I were to setup the old 835, that it would work now :)

So I'll keep it as a spare.

Thanks again so much for all your help!  You've gone out of your way to help me!   8)

Sure, didn't really want to mention it on a d-link forum, but it's an Asus.   :)
Im quite positive it was an issue on my network.  Like I said, Im willing to bet if I plugin the 835 now, everything would be fine since the Asus automatically changed some of my computer settings during the setup.
