Hello,

I am having a similar problem with my dir-835 router. I can create my own thread if you want but for the sake of comparing both problem I thought I could post in this one.

Here's my problem :

My wi-fi connection works flawlessly(15mbits d/l 10mbits u/l) but my LAN port are only giving me limited internet; I can access my router page, most internet page, I can stream videos (although sometime it doesnt work at all or I stream really slow). I cannot however, keep an open connection to anything. If I try to download something, it download for 1 second, then my d/l speed drops to 0, if i pause the download and restart it, it downloads for 1 sec and drops to 0 again. I cannot establish a connection to any online game either. I've had one of my network tech friend try to help me through teamviewer but the connection only last a few second and drops.

What i've tryed :
- Factory reset
- 30/30/30 reset (This doesnt seem to reset to factory state with the dir-835, instead it ask you for a firmware image, which i downloaded and installed the most recent version i could find: 1.04v).
- As stated above, firmware update
- Different cables
- Different computer (with different OS, vista 64 and win7 64)

What works :

Wi-fi on my cells and both my laptop.
Modem plugged directly to computer.

I'll try all thats been proposed in this thread that I havn't already tried when I get home as well as provide you with the basic requested info.

  • Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service) or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0)
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. Tools/Time.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I presume the old router worked?
I would take back the 835 and get another, if the 2nd one fails, I think there is a problem with cabling or configuration of the devices...

Okay so I got a new dir-835 router as well as a new cat6 cable and i'm still getting the same problem :(

I redid all of your router and wired connection configuration with no success there either.

Im open to any suggestion!

Interestingly enough, if i power off my router and turn it back on using on/off button on the back of the router, my plugged connection works for about 30second to 1minute.

Ok, this has got to be a ISP modem or configuration issue. This is silly.  ::)

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure. Let me know.

Agreed, this is ridiculious   ::)

I am at work atm but my computer is on at home and teamviewer is already installed/setup. Note that you cant teamviewer to the computer thats plugged to the router, but you can log unto my laptop thats on wi-fi so you can review router settings.

Do you need Admin login to router or will User suffice?

What found I think, couple of possibilities:
1. Disable True Gigabit routering under Setup/Internet/Manual
2. Change the SSID names for each radio, don't use the default names. Names can be anything.
3. Disable the Enable Graphical Authentication  under Tools/Admin.
4. Set a NTP server under Tools/Time.
5. I see you have several networking adapters on your Windows Laptop. Is this the same for the other PCs? You need to ensure that if these other adapters are enabled when you connect the wired LAN cable, that the only adapter that needs to be configured and enabled should be the on board NIC adapter, for the laptop, I think its' the RealTek PCIe GBE Family Controller that needs to be used. The others I'm not sure if they could be causing interferences on the wired LAN side of the PCs. Looking further into this adapters properties, I see that you have some additional settings configured for a Virtual Box Bridge as well. Looking at the Virtual Box Bridge adapter I see that IPv4 protocol is disabled and a static IP address was listed thats not in the 835's pool range. I attempted to enable it and removed the static IP address however I presume that the LAN cable on the LT is not connected.

I would use default settings for the Realtek adapter to see if this will help you get the wired LAN connect going. Once you get the LAN going, then attempt to configure custom options if you need to. I would disable IPv6 as well on the NIC adapter if your not using it.

I'm thinking this is a isolated configuration problem with the wired NIC adapter on the PCs and LT. If you can get the default settings in to place, I think this will help get the wired LAN connection established with the 835. I think the 835 is working fully as we are getting internet via wireless.

No they shouldn't if you disable them Make sure that the Virtual Box adapter donesn't interfere either. I see it's added to the main Realtek adapter so this could be effecting it. It seems that the main NIC adapter is connecting, however something in the configuration is causing the "Limited Connectivity" which tells me there is a problem on the PCs.

We may have found the culprit!!  ;D

I'll do some more extensive testing when I get back home tonight but after doing the following :

1. Disable True Gigabit routering under Setup/Internet/Manual
2. Change the SSID names for each radio, don't use the default names. Names can be anything.
3. Disable the Enable Graphical Authentication  under Tools/Admin.
4. Set a NTP server under Tools/Time.

I can connect through teamviewer to my PC without any problem as well as run a speed test and get the expected results(Which never worked before since my dl speed would drop to 0 after 1 second).

I proceeded to undo the suggestions one by one and found that re-enabling True gigabit connectivity would make my teamviewer extremely laggy/unresponsive again.

I have no idea as to what this function does or why it would cause any problems - perhaps it does have something to do with my pcs configuration as well.

Hopefully everything will be good after some more testing.

Keep us posted. I remember disabling this on my 826L as it has this Tru Gigabit Routing feature as I saw some issues in using it. I guess i need to do some more testing.

You can consider my case solved!

Ran some more tests, downloads, streams, online games - all worked fine.

Although i cannot seem to find a way to make it work with the True gigabit feature enabled even with all firewalls down and my NIC being the only active adapter. Perhaps it's simply incompatible with my NICs.

Both my deskptop comp and laptop NIC's have gigabit ethernet support, all my other devices are on wireless so it shouldnt matter for them right?

Ya wireless shouldn't matter.

The ISP modem claims to have a Gb port.

Only way to find out would be to connect your wired LAN PC directly to the isp modem and look at the connection speed on the Network Status window on the adapters properties.  :-\
