Title: Problems opening a port
Post by: Austinbike on June 09, 2013, 02:32:29 PM
I seem to be having problems opening port 52199 on my dir-655 hardware b1 fw 2.07NA.

I am running windows home server and I am able to open the right ports to allow that server to be accessed outside the firewall.

I loaded JR Media Center and that requires port 52199 to be open in order to access the application outside of my network.

I know the server is running properly and I can hit the server inside the network on that port and the application runs fine.

I can unplug the dir-655 and plug the server right into the cable modem (with windows firewall active) and I can access the application outside of my network.

I opened up 52199 in port forwarding and pointed it the sever. I set a port trigger for 52199 as someone had suggested, but that did not work either.

Is there something that I am missing? Is there something about that port?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

How are you configuring the 655 router? Application option? Have you tried configuring Virtual Server on the 655 router?

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

I was trying port forwarding and triggering (under application).

I cleared out port forwarding and triggering and added the virtual server.  Do I need to forward the port with the virtual server?

no shouldn't need to.
Also:
Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Nope, none of that has an impact.  Works inside, doesn't work outside.

I know the issue has to be a setting in the router because hardwired right into the cable modem works fine.

I believe this modem is a Gateway thus has a built in router already:

The cable modem does have a status page 192.168.100.1 and also provides an IP address to the router that is 216.xxx.xxx.xxx so there is some type of NAT happening.

Running with the router removed I am able to see the server outside of the network without having to open up any ports. This tells me there is probably not a firewall.

There is only 1 port on the cable modem so there is no switch. I tried plugging the server directly into the cable modem but I am only able to reach the status page at .100. I cannot find any setup page. If I try to access the default gateway address that I see in ipconfig, I just get a 404 error.

Any chance you can test with a new ISP modem say a different modem? I would ask your ISP if you can get a stand alone modem or if they support BYOM, then you can use your own. I recommend a Motorola SB 6 Series stand alone modem.

Also swap out and replace all LAN cables too, Cat 6 is recommended.

I will try swapping cables out.  However I don't think that is an issue.  Swapping the ISP or modem is not a realistic alternative.

I know the extreme of swapping ISP isn't realistic however the swapping of the modem isn't that un-realistic. Even trying the router at a friends or families place with a different ISP modem can help see if the problem follows as well.

How could it be the cable if port 80 is able to be opened on the firewall?

The arris 602 is a straight modem, no router features.

Which is why plugging straight in works.

Well unless you stated the model wrong, one site reports the 602G being a Gateway:
http://www.speedguide.net/routers/arris-touchstone-tm602g-voip-gateway-557 (http://www.speedguide.net/routers/arris-touchstone-tm602g-voip-gateway-557)

Thus the reason why a direct connection would work if there is NAT on the Modem.

Just sayin...

How ever you stated "The cable modem does have a status page 192.168.100.1 and also provides an IP address to the router that is 216.xxx.xxx.xxx so there is some type of NAT happening."

If this is the case then configuration of the 655 needs to be effected properly.

I had a 602g before I upgraded my service.  The 192.168.100.1 page was informational only, there was no configuration that could be changed.

I presume that some ISP probably either bridge the modems or also lock out features that they might not want users to see as well.

Well, seems like this could just be a configuration of the 655. IF he's getting forwarding while directly connected to the ISP modem and isn't with the 655, some configuration is needed for his application.

Reset to factory settings.

Opened up the port in virtual server section.

Working now.
