Now that I've got the usb drive connected and working alright, I'd like to know why the usb transfer speeds are as low as ~2MB/s (or ~16Mbit/s), while the same drive transfers ~250Mbit/s (which is near acceptable effective rate) when connected to my computer? The connection speed, whether it's 100Mbit/s or 1Gbit/s doesn't obviously affect, with slow transfer speeds like that. The obvious explanation is that the usb port on the modem is not High-Speed usb 2.0, but some 1.0 or 1.1. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus.
If somebody's got any advice on the matter, I'd be glad to hear!

USB speeds on most of these router that come with USB 2.0 connections for some reason isn't the fastest. I presume that since the router is doing other processing and functions that this could also be having an impact on the actual file xfers. I personally don't use or recommend doing large file xfers to USB drives connected to routers. They seem inherently slow performing in this area. Things like connecting printers and flash drives for small data xfers are recommended. If your needed large data xfers and good performance, connecting directly to a PC would be preferred as an initial step. There are other alternatives to using the USB port on routers as well. There are USB to LAN converters available. Also using dedicated LAN NAS is another alternative to USB drives.
I'm not sure of the spec on the USB port on this router, however I presume it's minimum USB 2.0.

The matter isn't of any great importance to me, I'm just curious to know why the speed is so remarkably slower compared to a direct connection.
I saw in another site a guy complaining of slow connection of a cheap Zyxel Lan NAS. He reported speeds of 5 MB/s, which is quite low for a NAS solution, I think.

Ya, most any router will impact file xfer performance over any connection. For wired NAS, it's recommended to install a external Gb network switch between router and wired devices. This eliminates the router performance and processing slow down and greatly improves speeds between shared connected wired devices. ;)
