Title: help adding a new harddrive.

i need to add new hard drive to my nas. i currently have a two terabyte installed.  what are the steps to add a new hard drive without erasing my info on the previous installed hard drive. im scared my info will be formatted.

Assuming you have only one drive in the DNS-320 at the moment, adding an additional drive shouldn't touch that drive if you chose STANDARD in the raid type selection.  Just be careful to read what is on the screen before taking the final step to format the drive.

Just a warning, if your data is very important you should have a backup of it, drives can, and do, fail!

so do i have to take out my original harddrive in side one before i put my new drive in bay 2?

If you have only one drive in the unit at the moment it shouldn't be necessary.  We have done this for clients that had only one disk setup as STANDARD without problems but we bid make a backup just in case.

If, on the other hand, you have two drives then it will depend on how you set them up in the first instance.  With JBOD and RAID 0  you will have to backup all the data on the unit because changing a drive will require formatting of both drives.  If it is RAID 1 then it should format the new drive and rebuild the RAID array, assuming you have ticked the rebuild raid array on the relevant setup page.
