Title: DIR-655, Cable Lengths, and No. of Devices Connected
Post by: monkeylove on July 24, 2013, 12:27:20 AM
Besides transferring data faster, are the gigabit ports in the DIR-655 also used for long cables? I have a bridged router connected by a 30-m cable, and the signal is fine if I use the DIR-655 but not if I use a router or switch with no gigabit ports.

Also is there a threshold for the number of devices connected to the DIR-655? Sometimes I can no longer access Facebook or Google using any device (although I can access other sites and DL fine), and I have something like ten devices connected (seven workstations, two media players, one security camera), although not all are running or access the 'net at the same time. I have a spare D-Link DES-1016D switch. Will transferring several of the cables to that help?

Distance is governed by the CAT type of cable that you use. CAT 6 has the best however Most CAT type cables can go up to 200-300 feet before it needs any amplification.

Router can handle up to 254 devices theoretically. I use a switch on the back end of mine and have 20 devices connected.
