I have an issue with my iPhones. Both are Iphone 4s using iOS 6.1.3 and both are connected to my network and I can access the internet with no problems. I can eprint fine and I can print wirelessly from 3 laptops and one desktop with no issues at all. When I try to AirPrint from either iPhone, I get the message saying "No AirPrint printers found". I have a D-Link DIR-657 router Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: 1.02 with multicasting enabled. The printer is an HP D110a with Bonjour and IPP enabled. Everything I have read says I should be able to print, but neither phone will. Does anyone have any ideas?

- What region are you located?
- Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
- Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates?
- Was the router working before any firmware updates?
Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
- Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service) or Gamefuel.
- Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
- Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
- Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0)
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
- Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
- Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Try Disabling IPv4/6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
- Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
- WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
- Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. Tools/Time.
Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
- What wireless modes are you using?
- 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
- Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Midwest United States. Why does that matter?
Wireless, obviously. Hence the AirPrint question.
Didn't know I was supposed to do a reset BEFORE a firmware update.
The router works fine other than allowing me to print from either iPhone.
WMM is enabled and all the others you suggested are default settings.

Region is specific for FW.
Have you asked Apple for information regarding this?

I've posted to their forum, but people who use Apple products and Apple themselves think their poop doesn't stink so the problem has to be elsewhere.
-
It figures, I use Apple Products and they are good however they come with there own set of stink. LOL.
I think there was some information over on the DIR-655 about Airplay recently llike in the past 6 months about Airplay. You might do a search there and over here:
FAQ Library (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=304.0)
I could have sworn that someone got it working.
Let us know if any of that linked information helps as well.

Yes, leave it to Apple to create a software program like Bonjour to enable a feature that works just fine for Microsoft without a separate software program. :o
I've looked through the other forums threads, and tried everything that also applies to my router and nothing seems to work.
-
Possible there is a setting we are missing or maybe that Apple protocol isn't compatible with the 657. I guess the next step that I would do would be to try a different model router to see or get on the phone and ask for level 2 or higher support with D-Link and ask them about this.
I suppose I can give this a go with my 657 and printer and iPhone 4S if you list me steps to get it installed. I have a HP LaserJet P2014n wired and USB only printer, so it has no wireless. I presume I should be able to print to it or does the printer need to have wireless?
-
I haven't tried hardwiring the printer because it is too far from the router for a standard cable to reach.
The setup was standard wireless setup, WPA-PSK security and nothing else. I have no problems at all connecting to the router and the internet. The only issue is when my iPhones try to find the printer. Oddly, there were about 3 times I was able to print to it. But 99.9% of the time, no dice.
-
Hmm, would be a good test if you can move the printer to try wired.
If you got it working a couple of times, wonder if there is something in the configuration of Airprint maybe thats almost there... ???

Tried hardwiring the printer to the router. The SharePort utility connected the printer just fine but I was still unable to print to it with my iPhone. This was after spending an hour on the phone with 3 people at D-Link's tech support who really have no clue what is going on. They also wanted to transfer me (and my credit card) to the upper level of tech support to see if they could do anything for me. I told them they were crazy to think I was going to pay money to get a 3 month old router which is still under warranty to do what my 6 year old Linksys router will do. >:(

Can you list me out what you do to set up the iPhones to print?
Are there any apps to install on the phone?
Are there specific sites you are printing or something I can replicate?
I'll connect my 657 up and see if I can get mine to print with the 657 and my printer.

Sorry it took so long to reply. There is nothing that needs to be done, really. If I need to print, I touch the print icon on the phone, it looks for a compatible printer, finds my HP D110a then I touch the print button. At least that's how it worked when I reinstalled my old Linksys WRT54G2 router Monday just to test my theory. I had it connected for an hour and any time I wanted to print from my iPhone, I was still connected to the printer. After I reconnected my D-Link DIR-657, I was able to see the printer for about 2 minutes before the router shut me out. I tried a firmware "upgrade" back to version 1.01 and it does the exact same thing as beta version 1.02 does. Since print functions were there with the Linksys router but not the D-Link, that proves to me that the problem lies in the router. What can be done to fix this?
-
Can you try the following?
Set the WiFi mode on the 657 from Mixed all mode to Single mode G, 20Mhz Only, WPA and TPIK only.
You'll need to reconnect the printers WiFi and the iphone to the routers WiFi SSID again.
Then test with Mixed G and N only, 20Mhz, WPA2 and AES Only.
Keep us posted.
I probably wont be able to test this as I don't have a WiFi printer. Only USB and LAN supporting printer. ::)

It is currently set for N, G & B but it had been set for N & G only (by default). WPA2 doesn't seem to be an option as it will only allow WPA Personal or Enterprise. I have tried different channel settings and the higher the number, the less connectivity in general (i.e. channel 6 was okay but when set to channel 11, I had reconnect to the network several times). I currently have it set to channel 1 and connectivity is not an issue. I was even able to find the printer this morning, but I also did not have my laptop powered up. I'll test THAT theory tonight. ::)
-
WPA2 is an option under the WPA Personal or Enterprise Wireless Security Mode section.
You should select WPA Personal then can you try the following?
Set the WiFi mode on the 657 from Mixed all mode to Single mode G, 20Mhz Only, WPA and TPIK only.
You'll need to reconnect the printers WiFi and the iphone to the routers WiFi SSID again.
Then test with Mixed G and N only, 20Mhz, WPA2 and AES Only.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?
Keep channel 1 for now.
Keep us posted.
-
There are about 12 other routers in the area and 3 of them are also on channel 1. But they are the same 12 that are there when I use the Linksys router so I can't see that being an issue. I honestly don't think this is a router "setting" that I can change. I have also been on Apple forums trying to see if the problem lies there and found this thread to be very interesting: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4936567?start=15&tstart=0
Since I don't have an issue using a different router, I'd say the problem is with the D-Link router blocking port 5353. What do you think?
-
So this was working before updating iOS as you stated in that Apple thread?
If you have several other WiFi routers near by, this can be an issue. Especially with newer generation routers that have the "Good Neighbor Policy" thats in all newer Mfr WiFi as a standard:
http://www.wi-fi.org/knowledge-center/faq/i-heard-wi-fi-certified-n-products-can-cause-interference-problems-other-wi-fi (http://www.wi-fi.org/knowledge-center/faq/i-heard-wi-fi-certified-n-products-can-cause-interference-problems-other-wi-fi)
Older generation routers did not have this and thus are brutes on the block an can be a cause of interferences or if your Linksys is an older generation router, you might just not see this. It seems that your iphone is making the connection via the router to the printer, however after a while, it fails. It tells me that the router maybe having problems with some interferences in your area.
Links>Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
-
I thought it was the iOS update at first, but I wasn't certain since I don't print from my phone all the time. It was also about the same time that I got this router.
Setting the power to low or medium had no effect. Well, that's not entirely true. When I set it to low and then rebooted, I was able to find the printer for the standard 2 minutes that it will connect when I make certain changes in the router, meaning that I am not able to find the printer for 2 minutes every time I make a change and then reboot the router.
I understand that other routers and Wi-Fi devices in the area may cause interference, but why would it only affect my iPhone's ability to see the printer? I have no other issues at all. Never a problem with dropped connections even with all my devices on the network connected at the same time.
I have also downloaded and installed Bonjour Printer Wizard here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999
I can not find the printer using that tool either which is leading me back to port 5353 being blocked by the router.
-
Any chance you have a different DIR series router around? Could you by chance go to a local computer store like best buy or fry's, they have refund policies. I would give a different DIR series router a try and see if the problem still appears.
I don't have a wireless native printer, however I do have a wireless print server that I connected yesterday. I might give this set up a try and see if I can at least print from my iPhone to my LaserJet connected to this wireless print server. Are there any apps or configurations needed to print on the iPhone. I've never printed in this fashion before so just need to know the setup process.
I've sent a email to D-Link asking for review of this and see if I can get some information on this.
-
I really don't want to buy another router right now since money's a little tight.
There are no apps and configuration should be automatic. Just pick a picture or note that you want to print, click the "action" button in the bottom left corner, select print and it will automatically attempt to find an AirPrint enabled printer. Once it does, you should be able to click the print button to start printing.
-
Understand man...
Let me try this after work today and see if I can reproduce it with what I have and connected to the 657.
-
Well I fiddled with my Wireless Print Server connected to the 657 and my LaserJet. I wasn't able to see any AirPrint available printers on my 4S. I presume that this is probably due to the fact that I don't actually have any AirPrint printers that support this Apple feature. Just putting a wired USB printer on a Wireless print server doesn't seem to work for me and I don't have access to a printer that does.
My Mac book was able to connect to the Wireless print server and print to it. I presume this was via IP or maybe Bonjour protocol however my print server is several years old and may not support AirPrint either or Bonjour.
Only thing I can think of is that something is interfering with the connections for Airprint since you can get a connection for a short duration then it stops. Or something in FW is possibly not working right with Airprint.
Not sure about port 5353 even thats mDNS thus Bonjour protocols.
It's worth a try maybe if you use Application Rule and set up a rule for your iPhone using it's IP address, reserved, and input the 5353 port number for both Trigger and Firewall, UDP for both Traffic Type and see if this does anything. since you are on a LAN to LAN side connection with the iPhone and the printer, not sure if doing this will help since using Application rules is for WAN to LAN connections. :-\
-
Tried and failed. Good suggestion, though and I do appreciate your help. D-Link's "customer service" is useless via e-mail and I was on hold for 42 minutes Monday before I hung up and got on with my life.
-
If you got time, try doing the same thing under QoS. Remove the Applications rules and set up the similar rules in QoS. Not sure if this will help either.
Email support can't handle this level of support, so phone and level 2 or higher is needed here.
I'll forward this on to D-Link and see if I can get any help on this. Can't guarantee anything. Please be patient.
-
Also had another idea for you as a suggestion and it could work, and should. Connect your Linksys router wired up to the 657 in AP mode. SSID and PW can be the same however make sure the channels are different. You could possibly use different SSIDs or make sure the Linksys router is closest to the wireless printer and make sure it connects to the Linksys router running in AP mode. I'm curious if your iPhone connected to the wireless on the 657, will it print thru the 657, via the Linksys in AP mode to the printer then?
I presume if you connected the iPhone to the Linksys in AP mode it should print there too.
-
Also, on your 657 under Advanced/Firewall do you have optional NAT settings for UDP and TCP by chance?
Can you review this and give feed back?
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=45869.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=45869.0)
I'm curious if changing the NAT settings and disabling Multi-cast could help here.
Let us know...
-
The one time I was able to talk to someone at D-Link, they also asked about NAT settings. Maybe that's the problem, but there is no way to change those with the DIR-657. Also, I have tried enabling and disabling multicasting and it doesn't matter.
It also bothers me that they want to charge me to get a higher level of support than just the basic customer service person you get when you call. The router is only 4 months old now and I will not pay to fix a problem that shouldn't be there in the first place.
-
I have passed this along to D-Link for review. There could be a protocol thats not being passes or being properly used on the 657.
Please let us know if you can try out suggestions in post #25 and see if this helps any.

I am very reluctant to try that suggestion for 3 reasons.
#1) I will have to reconfigure my network and reset the Linksys to factory settings due to the current configuration and security settings. I have MAC address filtering enabled on that one and I had problems with connecting to the router the last time I disabled that.
#2) I don't plan to use that setup ever so it is a moot point whether it works or not.
#3) Communicating to my wireless printer that is on the current network should not be this difficult. If I can establish a connection after changing settings in the DIR-657, but then lose it a couple of minutes later, there is a problem with the router or the firmware and nothing else.
I do appreciate your help, but I am not going to jury rig my network to enable a function that should work under normal circumstances. This is a D-Link problem that needs to be fixed by them. Unfortunately, I also don't have all day to wait on hold hoping someone picks up the phone when I try to call for in warranty support. >:(
-
You could save a configuration to file on the Linksys for later use so you don't loose it's configuration should you choose to try using the Linksys as an AP.
I guess we are at the end of our help here then. It's up to you weather or not to be patient enough to get additional help from D-Link. It's up to you to inform them about the problem. We have done all we can here to help you and make alternative suggestions which you don't seem willing to try. This is now beyond forum help here and it's your responsibility to bring it to the attention of official D-Link support.
Good Luck.
-
Well, if adding the other router as an AP did work ...... what would that tell us?
And I am pretty patient, but I was dead serious when I said I was on hold for 42 minutes last week. That would test anyone's patience.
-
Yesterday morning I discovered that the connection apparently comes and goes at will. I took screenshots on my phone to document it. Is there any way to post those here?
5:52 A.M. - Was connected to the printer.
5:59 A.M. - Was not connected to the printer.
6:02 A.M. - Was connected to the printer.
6:05 A.M. - Was not connected to the printer.
6:06 A.M. - Was connected to the printer.
6:09 A.M. - Was not connected to the printer.
6:13 A.M. - Was connected to the printer.
What would cause that particular connection to come and go? I never lose connection to the network or the internet on either phone or any of my computers.
-
Adding an additional AP that is known to work between the iphone and the printer is an alternative work around solution while we wait in hopes that this can be resolved ON the 657 router.
I can understand and empathize with being patient on the phone waiting for them to answer. I have done my share of waiting as well. ::)
If you can post screen shots, it would be very helpful. Please go to places like photobucket or imageshack on the web and great a free account. Upload your photo files there and then copy and past the Forum [IMG] url link here in to your thread. They should display pictures then for us to review.
Let us know if you need more help...

One other question. When I tried setting a static IP for the printer, I used the instructions I found here: http://resource.dlink.com/connect/mastering-static-ip-addresses/
Those say " The IP Address you choose will need to fall within your router’s DHCP UP Address Range."
But on HP's site, look at step 6 here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02817031&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4023246&tmp_track_link=ot_search
Those instructions say "If you know what the DHCP range is, set an IP address in which the last set of numbers is outside that range, but no higher than 254."
Do you know which one is correct?
-
Its' recommended to place any static IP assigned devices out side of the DHCP IP address pool. So normally, D-Link routers have a pool of .100 thru .199. I set my devices that need static IPs at .2 thru .99 or .200 thru .254. You normally would not set a static IP address with in the pool range since the router is handling the management of that range and using Reservations is only with this assigned pool range.
I notice one thing about my LaserJet, it always gets the same IP address for some reason weather or not using Reserved or Static. I think it's something on the printer that keeps it going, even though I've changed out different routers.
Give both a try and see what happens with the printer...Keep us posted.
-
I tried both ways and still can't find the printer with my iPhone. I can print from my PC's with no problems, though.
-
Well, if you can print from PCs ok, I believe there is a problem between the iOS and the FW on the 657. Something isn't letting the iPhone communicate correctly with the printer.
Well, I have forwarded this to D-Link for review. I don't know when or if this will get fixed depending on there findings. I would highly recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask for level 2 or higher support and inquire about this. Once you get thru, hopefully it will be addressed soon for you. This is mostly beyond any forum help here and needs to be addressed by D-Link themselves.
I would also recommend connecting up the other router as an AP in addition to the 657 as an alternate solution while you wait to for resolution from D-Link.
Good Luck.
-
Well, it looks like this will not get fixed. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone yesterday, 47 minutes of that with a "level 2" support agent, and got nowhere. She had me try several things we already tried multiple times and then told me I need to contact HP to find out how to fix this issue with the D-Link router. I even had to tell her which port Bonjour uses. :o
I really do appreciate your time and effort, Furry. You have been FAR more helpful and knowledgeable than D-Link's tech support. I don't think they understand how their own products work past the basic setup and operation.
-
I hate to resurrect an old topic, but this one needs to be addressed. After living with not being able to print from my phone for almost a year, I have proven to myself that is was most definitely the D-Link router that was the problem. I had previously reconnected an old Linksys router and re-setup the network. Using that router, I had no problem finding my wireless printer. Recently I changed my Comcast bundle and they sent me a new HD box and wireless gateway. After installing the wireless gateway, I can locate and print to my HP D110a printer every time. With the D-Link, it was almost always "No AirPrint Printer Found". I tried 4 different firmware versions including a beta version that was brand new and nothing worked.
Many thanks to FurryNutz for all his hard work and effort. He went out of his way to help and even got assistance (although ultimately futile) that D-Link would not provide to me.
Shame on D-Link for their lack of technical knowledge about their own product. They had me trying to change settings that didn't exist for that router plus the utterly ridiculous hold times before I even spoke with anyone. I will be kind and not bad mouth the product to my friends, but I certainly will not recommend D-Link based on my experience with them.
-
I recommend that you set up that Linksys router as a wired wireless AP in addition to the 657. You can run both at the same time using same SSID and PWs. Channels need to be different. Or shut off the radio on the 657 and use the Linksys as your main AP. I presume the issue is with the the 657 or may be that it's not supported at all or in compatible. If this suggestion doesn't work out then I recommend that you find an alternative solution as the 657 isn't getting much development at this time and I presume it maybe headed to phased out status with in this year.
Good Luck.
-
Sorry buddy, but I am done with D-Link. If anyone wants a working DIR-657 for $20 US plus shipping, I would be happy to sell it. Just PM me. It works very well and my internet speeds were excellent. Poor product support, phone support and a general lack of product knowledge by D-Link themselves are my reasons for never using one of their products again.
-
Sorry it's not working for you. My iphones works with this router just fine save we don't do any printing with them. This may just a compatibility issue between the iphones and this model router.
Good Luck.
