So with a few users getting there hands on this hot router, please post your experiences and let us know how it's working for you. Please try setting up the router using any wizards and using default settings accept for changing the WiFi SSID names and PW. Let us know how it works right out of the box.
If you seem to be having a specific problem, please make a new post and let us help you figure it out.
Hope everyone will enjoy. We're all looking forward to it and we thank D-Link for carrying on the great DGL line of routers. ;D

So far the 5500 seems to work like it should! Did some Xbox Live gaming last (BO2) night and it seemed to perform well.
I did make the following adjustments to the router.
SETUP-INTERNET:
Entered the PRIMARY DNS SERVER / SECONDARY DNS SERVER IP addresses according to namebench (default had nothing).
SETUP-WIRELESS SETTINGS:
Changed WIRELESS NETWORK NAME for both 2.4GHZ Band and 5GHZ Band (default set by DLINK).
Changed 802.11 MODE to Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g for 2.4GHZ Band (default was 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b) - I don't have any devices that use 802.11b.
Unchecked ENABLE AUTO CHANNEL SCAN for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ Band (default is checked).
Changed WIRELESS CHANNEL to least used channel in my neighborhood for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ Band (default grayed out due to ENABLE WIRELESS CHANNEL SCAN being checked).
Changed VISIBILITY STATUS to Invisible for both 2.4GHZ & 5GHZ Band (default was Visible).
Changed WPA MODE to WPA2 Only for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ band (default was AUTO - WPA or WPA2).
Changed CIPHER TYPE to AES for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ Band (default was TKIP and AES)
SETTINGS - NETWORK SETTINGS:
Changed ROUTER IP ADDRESS (default is assigned by DLINK).
Checked ENABLE DNS RELAY (default was unchecked).
Changed DEVICE NAME (default is assigned by DLINK).
Changed DHCP IP Address Range (default assigned by DLINK).
Checked ALWAYS BROADCAST (default is unchecked).
Changed NETBIOS NODE TYPE to Mixed-Mode [Broadcast then Point-to-Point] (default is Broadcast Only).
SETTINGS - STREAMBOOST
Unchecked ENABLE AUTO BANDWIDTH ESTIMATION (default was checked). Performed a BANDWIDTH TEST and speeds detected were consistent with my DOWNLOAD SPEED / UPLOAD SPEED (default was grayed out with DOWNLOAD SPEED 100 / UPLOAD SPEED 10).
All other settings haven't been touched. I may revert back to factory settings and change only the SSID and SSID password.
ROUTER IS ROCK SOLID! LOVE IT!!

Hooked mines up today. Love the UI. Seems pretty solid other than the fact that it may be throttling my internet speed. I was getting about 160 down with my 4500 on speediest.net, now getting 85-90 tops. Upload went from 65 to about 10 so there must be some settings that I have to change to enable my normal speeds again. Did notice open NAT on both xbox 360's hard wired so that was a good sign.
-
As the poster said above me, it looks like this new router is throttling my Internet speeds. On my old Dlink router I was getting 30Mbps down and 10 up. Now I'm getting 8 up and 3 down on both wireless and with my laptop plugged directly into the router. When I get home from work I'll try plugging back in my old router to see if speeds go back to normal. I'd really hate to return this router because I really like the interface and Streamboost technology.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Mine is set up this way, it seems to be working fine , tested with Speedtest.net
Go to Setup>streamboost tab>enable Streamboost bandwidth control>check enable auto bandwidth .
Save settings
Side note I opt in for the Streamboost updates

I tried with and without the auto detection in streamboost tab with the same results. I have fios 150/65 package and the most current firmware was already installed out the box. I will try to teat again when I get home in a few hours.

Just thought I would chime in on the possibility of the 5500 throttling internet speeds. I've noticed NO 5500 speed throttling on my end. I subscribe to 20Mbps down / 2Mbps up. The 5500 is reporting 20.40 down / 2.34 up. I do have ENABLE AUTO BANDWIDTH ESTIMATION checked (checked by default). These numbers (20.40 down / 2.34 up) are different from when I last checked (last night).
In running a few speed tests on devices in my home connected to the 5500 (wired / wireless), I've noticed PING times have been better and more consistent (between 11 - 20 / wired - wireless) and my speedtest.net results have remained much the same. This is using the 5500 default settings (except for SSID & PW change / disabling DNS relay).
I will be changing to a different ISP on Monday since right now I can't get any faster speed with my current ISP. My new ISP will give me 40Mbps down / 5Mbps up. It will be intersting to do a speed test without / with the 5500 connected to my home network. I'm planning to test both (without / with 5500).
It will be intersting to see what kind of speeds are reported without the 5500 connected (dyvurcz / imike76).
I'll be keeping a close eye on this issue. Hopefully the 5500 isn't throttling internet speeds :'(

I honestly can't wait to get home and test again. I'm pretty sure DNS Relay is enabled on mines so maybe if I turn that off and try again it will make a difference. I've waited far too long for this router to be disappointed with it! In any event I'll report mu finding later for sure.

Just set up my router and so far I like the idea of the technology. I have it working for my network, but I wish there was more control over the details.
The things that I noticed missing are not having the dynamic DNS feature and network routing. It was handy for my friends who wanted to play MC to just keep remember the name to connect to my MC server. Maybe they will add this feature later? With the routing thing, I am a network admin and I play with Cisco routers on a separate network that I would like to have access to the internet. The 4500 had the ability to point to different networks and 5500 does not now. That is a bummer.
-
I got a quick look at the 5500 yesterday, my impression of the router is that some of the features that other DIR and DGL series routers have, may not be seen in this router, as it seems to be set up for ease of use for the home and gamer users, and letting the new SB technology handle things behind the scenes and having less user control over some things and how this router behaves. There maybe something that SB technology is based on and may not allow for some reason or by design the additional user features and controls that most of us are used to. Dynamic DNS isn't a requirement for gaming persae however maybe thats something that may work or be included down the road or again, if SB technology may not be compatible on some level with DDNS.
The router still offers up using Manual DNS IP addresses and would recommend testing out this section and then disabling DNS Relay to see if this has any impact on operation.
Everyone needs to understand that this is a complete new technology for D-Link routers and some of the behaviors and features that we are used to may not be seen in this model router. This is a gaming router and has some new behavior that we are getting to know and figure out. I presume it will take some time to get to know it and see what this router can do for those. I recommend that if there are features that you require or need that this router does not currently have, I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask about this and see if this router model is right for you. Depending on what D-Link has in store for the future for this router, they may or may not decide to include other features that users have experienced with in other model routers.
I'll post a sticky for Bugs and Feature Requests here on the forum and will have D-Link review it and keep an eye on it. Most anything dealing with FW has to be done at the coding level which is beyond any thing here in the forums can do. We can only ask D-Link nicely to review and consider our requests.

No Dynamic Dns is a dealbreaker for me. I use that for my WOL, servers, RDP, etc. I can't believe this. ???

I'll inquire about this with D-Link and see if there is any info on it.
Please be patient.

Thank you sir. ;D
Their emulator link isn't working either. ;)
My DGL-4500 just decided to start randomly rebooting within the past few weeks...maybe it new the 5500 was coming ::)
-
I'll enable the auto bandwidth selection when I get home from work and see if that helps.
I have a motorola sb6121 modem plugged into the dgl5500. I have Comcast and I'm located in greenwood, in (a couple miles south of Indy).
I have a Xbox 360 wired to the router and everything else is wireless (nexus 7, 2 iPhones, playstation vita).
I have comcast's 50/10 plan and average close to 30 Mbps down and 10 up.
And firmware version is 1.01 on the router.
-
My contact at D-Link is reviewing the DDNS information and hopes to post some information about it. Please be patient. ;)
-
I presume that if you plug directly into the SB modem that the speed results differ?
Ensure that all other devices are either turned off or not streaming anything while speed testing.

Sir, you'll need to refer to the DGL-4500 forum for that model router sir. This forum is for the DGL-5500. :P
hehe.

Whats your ISP Speed UP and Down that your getting on your 5500 Lex?
Furry I am with TWC 14mps down/ 1mps up. The router has been working well with that speed, would like to have Google fiber, but probably won't happen any time soon. Considering upgrading the speed just so I can have at least 2mps upload.
-
I would if you can do that and get 2Mb. I has 10 and 12 Down and 1 UP for years before my ISP (cableone) finally got upgraded support for 2Mb. I'm enjoying the 50/2 now.
-
Furry do you have a 5500 setup?
-
Very soon. ;)
-
Cool! Let us know if you actually get 50 down. One thing i can say the wifi speeds are way faster on this router. Last speed test I got 75 down on wifi which was about 45 on my 4500.
-
I do with my 868L, will see how the 5500 holds up. Its going to get hammered. ;D Taking it to a XBL LAN Party tomorrow at my friends place. Should be a great test.

Got my DGL-5500 yesterday 8/1/2013. Been playing around with it, have not port forwarding yet and both Black Ops II and Halo 4 are moderate for some reason.
Modem - SB6141 - 15 DOWN and 1 UP
ISP - TWC (Earthlink)
Firewall Settings:
SPI off (default)
Anti-Spoof off (default)
Router Settings:
DNS Relay ON (default)
Streamboost:
StreamBoost Bandwidth Control ON (default)
UPNP off (on default)
Tested bandwidth:
Down - 13.03
Up - 1.04
Opted in for Streamboost automatic updates (off default)
Wireless settings:
2.4ghz - Auto Channel Scan off (ON default)
5.0ghz - Auto Channel Scan off (ON default)
-
Try resetting the XBL Network settings, power them OFF then back on one at a time then reserve the IP address for each on the router?

Would having both 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz BOTH on at the same time conflict with each other?
Wireless settings:
2.4ghz - Auto Channel Scan off (ON default)
5.0ghz - Auto Channel Scan off (ON default)
All Clients are reserved and I currently have My Xbox 360, PC , iPhone and my sister's PC reserved.
-
No they shouldn't conflict.
You need to enable uPnP though. This will probably help. Turn OFF the xboxes first before re-enabling uPnP.
-
Are they working on fixing that emulator so I can see what I'm missing ;) ;)
-
You just need to go get one sir. You'll love it. LOL. ;D
I presume they will. I'll ask again. Soon as I get time, I'll post captures here in the forum in mean time, of all the pages.
Besides you need to update your WOL sticky to reflect any changes needed if the DGL-5500 is used. ;D

I'm having some issues setting up static ip addresses in the dhcp reservation section. I setup about 20 selected save and then a restart. Well it never comes back up. I have to power the unit off/on before I can access the router. I tried again added about 5, this time I selected save and I think it says restart later. Same thing happens I cannot access the router.

- What region are you located?
3rd Party Security Software Configurations
- Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
- Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

hey furry. Did what you asked. Edit settings on router, tuned off xbox, restart router with UPNP, Xbox on started up halo 4 and black ops 2 still moderate.
Reset router to default, my TESTED BANDWIDTH changed to DOWN 14.81 and UP 1.04, OPTED in to Streamboost updates, Reserved all Clients, XBOX 360 as my top priority, DNS relay ON, UPNP ON, only have 2.4 ON because I don't have any products that use 5.0ghz, and basically everything I listed before. Still moderate.
-
Did you reset the xbox as well before turning them off?
How are the xboxes connected? Wire or wireless?

I reset it to factory defaults just now and just booted halo 4 same thing moderate.

My Xbox 360 and PC are WIRED while iPhone is WIRELESS. Yes I turned Xbox off first and then the router always.
-
Hmmm...interesting...should be OPEN. Only thing I would do is Power off the ISP Modem and Factory reset the 5500. Power off all xboxes. Power ON the ISP modem after you hit Factory reset on the 5500, set up the 5500 SSID and PW for 2.4ghz, turn OFF 5Ghz radio. Let the modem and router sync then power ON one xbox and check NAT status.
Does you ISP have any ISP DNS features like Comcast does?
I reset it to factort defaults just now and just booted halo 4 same thing moderate.

I'm located in the US
I have tried FF, Safari, Chrome and IE 9.
I don't have any AV installed on my Mac. I've been getting 500 - Internal Server Error also. Firewall service is turned off on my PC.
At the time the other devices were off but I'll double check.

I am having this issue as well. I fixed by doing a port forward to my xbox for port 3074. I think it is ISP related, but I can't seem to get them to check it out.
Edit: I also had to power off the router after the setting change restart in order for the changes to take effect, a warm restart still had "moderate" with the port forward.

Good info DJ...Henry, if you can try this as well...let us know.

Thats odd. I have 3 xbox 360s( 2 hard wired, 1 wireless) connected all with open NAT. Tested on all of them running black ops at the same time with no issues what so ever.

I have 3 Xbox 360's as well (2 hard wired / 1 still in the box - Xbox LIVE 10th Anniversary Edition ;D). Both open NAT and I'm sure the third Xbox 360 would as well. 8)
-
I have heard that D-link is the one of few that can do multiple xboxes with open NAT, so that's why I think it's an ISP issue for me. I have tried every trick on the internet as well as a few I invented myself and I still can't get open unless I port forward.

Is the Mac wired or wireless connected to the 5500?
What OSX version are you using on the Mac?
I'll be checking my Mac Book Pro today with my 5500.
The Macbook Pro is wireless, running OSX 10.8.4. I was able to put all the ips in from my pc, which is wired, but still had the same problem. I had to enter a couple hit save and restart. Sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't. I also kept getting the 500 internal error. Also, it seems to work for awhile then all of a sudden I cannot get to any webpages.
BTW I use Time Warner RR service
-
Set up my 5500 using OSX 10.8.4 as well using Safari. I was wired to the router while I got it all configured and set up. I have't seen any issues at the moment. Just basic configuration and looking around. I finally switched over to 2.4Ghz WiFi using Single mode N, WPA2 and AES only. 5Ghz is set for mixed ALL mode, WPA2/AES only.
What Mfr Modem and Model # is your ISP modem?

BTW I use Time Warner RR service

Just got mine today. Replaced a 4500. Set up was a breeze. The speedtest from within the router itself was the correct speed for my cable connection. 5g wifi, like most, is still lacking in range. 2.4g is a lot better than my 4500.
We will see how it does. My network is heavily multimedia and gaming. So between the PC's and the Rokus, and dozen other devices, we will see how it hold up.
Seem pretty snappy so far.

Is their anyway to rename the connected devices?
It would be handy for me with so much connected, rather than keeping a note pad :)
-
You can reserve the IP addresses under Setup/Networking. Add the reservation then give a new Name in the Name field box. Save Settings.
Not sure about the My Network name display behavior yet.

I've noticed that after renaming devices in the DHCP RESERVATION LIST, they don't carry that same name in the list of NUMBER OF DYNAMIC CLIENTS list or MY NETWORKS. It's seems that it's always been this way with D'Link routers in the past (857 / 4500). I wish after renaming the devices it would carry that name throughout the router.
-
under my network it shows the names you have on the device itself for example I put named all my xbox 360's under network settings in the console and thats the name that appears under my network on the router

I'll check my WiFi settings. I have the Motoroal SB6141. I also changed the routers ip address. There is something this router doesn't like. I had to restart the router again so I could access the internet.
-
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Well a bit of an update.
As the router is on, it is finding the older devices that were connected on my old wifi. I has found the printer and a security camera that I was not looking to reconfigure (pita).
Also, with 2 Rokus streaming 1080p as well as 2 tablets in use and me gaming on my hardwired rig, my ping is down 10ms compared to the 4500.
I have had a few issues in the configuration menu. Mostly, you need to allow it time. It appears to by dynamic updating for the network and it configuration.

Newegg has some very great shielded CAT7 cables by Rosewill for very affordable price. Highly recommend.

Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps.
-
Recommended distance between devices is 2-3 feet approx.

I wonder why my weather station lost contact with the remote sensor......

Funny how I tried everything technical and forgot about the easy thing to do. I swapped out cables. I'll let you know how it does.

Ya, we can. Let me know when a good time frame is for you. I'm headed home now. Woo hoo.
Have a good weekend everyone. ;)
Hey furry. Got home did the HARD? Reboot and still moderate. I reset the router to factory settings, did not reserve any, turned off Media Server, ONLY 2.4, booted Xbox 360, Xbox 360 Priority 1, have UPNP ON and booted up Halo 4 and Black Ops II and they're OPEN.
I guess the RESERVE is buggy.

I'm not having a good experience with this router. I hanged out the cable same issue. I'm able to surf for a little bit then it doesn't work and I cannot access the router until I reboot it. I also did a factory reset and kept the default is same thing. I had to hold the factory rest for 20-30 seconds before it worked.
Edited: I terminated a new Cat6 cable and I think I may working now. I uploaded my config and so far so good and that's with the IP address changed. Usually the disconnect is right away and so far its been about 10 minutes.
-
Mine is reserved. Try reserving the IP addresses. I set my reservations at 192.168.0.198 and .199 for my 2 xboxes. Then set your other non xbox or gaming devices down low, .100 thru .120 or how many devices you have.
Reservations is working.

There has got to be something going on there. You have a good ISP modem, It's a step up from mine. If the ISP signal is good to the modem. There shouldn't be any issues.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
Does the ISP have any boosting or DNS services that are online in addition to having Internet Services?

Get throttling Internet speed with Stream Boost enable.
ISP is Charter
With Stream Boost enable I get down 85.96 Mbps and up is 4.28 Mbps
Without Stream Boost enable I get down 102.94 Mbps and up is 5.27 Mbps

I gotta try to disable it to see if I get my full bandwidth. That would suck to have to disable the main feature of the router lol

Shouldn't...could be other issues upstream from router thats causing speed to fail..cabling, ISP modem, ISP signal quality.

I know for me it's not an issue with the isp because I hooked my 4500 back up just to test it and my speeds are about 25 faster. Tested more than once before hooking the new one back up. I really think there could be a bug that keeping it from being as fast it can be.

It not ISP problem I have the DGL 4500 and DIR -827 and DIR-865L the GameFuel work fine the DIR-827 with QOS work fine I get my 100 and 5 up but the DIR-865L does the same as DGL-5500 it cut my bandwidth down.
-
What happens if you turn of SB?
I'm getting my 50/2 here. Not sure about 100/5 though...

I'm not sure if TW has any boosting or DNS services but I do have a tech guy coming in the morning. Also there is a splitter be used because I have my modem for internet and TW modem for telephone.

I wouldn't say my experiences are bad, just not seeing much a boost or anything spectacular compared to my DGL 4300
Download Speed(Mbps) 11.80
Upload Speed(Mbps) 1.15
Some things I noticed are
Battlefield 3 never comes up as an app using bandwidth, I suppose because it connects through battlelog which is web based.
My printer is in fact connected but doesn't show anywhere. And the WPS button didnt find my printer either.
I was hoping for a more expanded set of options so I could completely configure access to other pc's (I desperately want to limit access to facebook )
Other than that , I'm not particularly satisfied or at least not yet. and all I can say is it works.
I'm keeping it so I'll have to get over the 199 pricetag
-
I do think the 5500 will get better over time. It may take a couple of firmware updates to get there, but I have confidence that D-Link will come through and make this one of the best routers ever released! ;D
-
Have you tried connecting the printer via the SSID and PW? My printer isn't wireless however via LAN it connects and is seen by the router.
I notice that it seems to be preferred that users should reserve IP addresses for ALL devices ON the router.

I did connect the printer through the SSID and router wifi password through the printers software so it connected fine, but I prefer like you said to reserve a slot for it,but it no longer shows so I can add it.

With the EXCEPTION of an Access Point. Right? :)

You might restart the router and power cycle the printer and see if it shows up...It should show for you under Setup/Networking...

ok I did restart it and it did not place a ip for the printer nor mac address.
Right now I dont even know how its working but it is.

Is it listed now in the Dynamic DHCP Clients list? If so, you should be able to set a reservation there.

It's not at all listed anywhere.

Hey furry. I'm gonna wait it out until Dlink uploads the next firmware update. I did what you asked and reserved; no matter what Halo 4 and Black Ops II still came up as MODERATE. What I noticed is that in the network settings my Xbox Mac addresss name came up as UNKNOWN for some reason while other clients that I have are recognized and at MY NETWORK it's recognized as Xbox 360?
-
My MAC addresses are all being listed correctly...only the IP addresses on some of my devices are displayed as unknown, like the xboxes. Are the xboxes wired or wireless?

Wired

Both of mine have been wireless, however even with one wired and one wireless, they are showing uknown for IP address. MAC addresses are displaying and OPEN NAT is seen.

Sorry for not updating family came into town. :) So the tech guy came out took the motorola out and activated the arris modem which is together with my phone. Up until yesterday it was working fine but now its acting up again. Once I turn the power off/on I'm able to get to the dlink webpage and surf normally. After about 10 minutes or so I'm unable to search webpages and cannot get to the router webpage. I don't lose connection as I RDP into my work PC then vpn to the network. I'm baffled. I'm going to put the motorola router back because I thought maybe it was an issue with that but it doesn't seem to be the case. I also bought a cat 6 cable today but still having the same issue.
-
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Sure that would be fine. Anything to get this working.
-
Send me a PM with the Teamviewer ID and PW and we'll have a look. Please be wired to the 5500 with a PC, not wireless. You could do a reset or a reboot on the router so we can ensure we can access the web page.

So far so good Furry. I guess it didn't like when I changed the ip address of the router.

Hey Furry so far so good. Forgot to quote you when I replied back. I guess it didn't like the change of IP address. Thank you for all your help yesterday. It was a tedious project but so far its working. I hated that I had to change the ip address of my linux boxes and services but it is working.
-
Good to hear and glad to be of help. I presume maybe something either with that IP address pool or maybe in Linux, or IE could have been a cause. I think using FF for you might work better for managing and configuring the router.
Keep us posted if you seen any other issues or problems.
Enjoy.
