Title: FORUM USER REQUESTS and BUGS
Post by: FurryNutz on August 02, 2013, 09:26:59 AM
This thread is in regards to what users of the DGL-5500 would like to request DLink to review and consider adding features to the routers FW and operation. Also this thread includes any reports of bugs that arere-producible, that should be reviewed by DLink seen by us users. Please be detailed, concise and tactful when posting the requests and bug details.

Do not arbitrarily post defects or bugs here. Before reporting concerns about defects or bugs, please ensure that troubleshooting of the problem has been thoroughly completed before posting a problem about defects. Not all issues are a defect or bug related. Let other users help you troubleshoot the problem first before posting here.  Non-related posts will be removed and moved to the correct forum.

Demanding anything will not get us anything. There are no guarantees.

Please keep other subjects, topics and questions to other threads and posts. This thread is just a central list of Features and Bugs for review by DLink.

If you like, you can PM me your list and details and I will had them to a list I've started here.  ;)

FEATURE REQUESTS:
Example: 1. Add router web page timeout options. (Would help to disable this when working with users in making operations in a slow manor or for those who like to keep the routers page open there browsers for a long period of time.)

DEFECTS:
Example: 1. At 24 MAC entries it said "You cannot add more rules because the table is full. " Need to find out if this is a defect if other rules are not set up in the pool or if there is an actual limitation on setting up the amount of MAC entries you can have.

FEATURE REQUESTS:

1. Wireless Status page (Status section). SSID   MAC Address   IP Address   Mode   Rate (Mbps) Signal (%)   Very helpful in seeing the wireless rate and signal information, but also helpful to see if any unwanted connections are active.

2. Advanced Wireless Page Additional tweaks, short gi, neighbor protection.

3. Larger logs page Very tiny window, DGL 4300/4500 was much longer + wider and easier to read.

4. Full Device Info Status page Super handy page with everything listed. Similar to DGL-4500

5. Special Applications page I used a few options here on my DGL-4300 + 4500

You pretty much requested everything I was looking for here.

I would add automatically filling in ports when an application is selected. On the 4500 when id select xbox live it would fill in the ports on this one you have to know what ports to open. Not a big deal but it was easier before.

...

DEFECTS:
1. If you’re plug in to a switch that is plug in the router the computers name are replace with the word none.

Are these static host or dynamic?  Static hosts tend to show either "none" or the OS name Ex. "Windows" "Linux". This is due to the fact that StreamBoost captures the hostname of the connecting device from the DHCP request routine. You may create a DHCP reservation and have the host IP configuration change to DHCP to overcome this.

3. Logs don't seem to hold much if anything specially after DEBUG option is enabled. Logs clear out if router is rebooted. Not leaving any historical log history.

4. Rebooting DSL PPPoE modems and DGL-5500 causes network devices not to appear in My Networks or Priorities. Have to reboot the ISP DSL Modem once again to resolve.

5. In Mac OSX 10.7.5, after disabling ABE and rebooting the DGL-5500 while all devices are online, causes the routers web UI to hang and unable to gain access to the log in page. Tried Opera, FF and Safari and would not access the routers page. However all other internet services were accessible through the router. Router had to be rebooted to get to routers web page.

6. Notice that user experiences and operation of routers web page not as good when using IE, Safari and Opera. Odd behavior is seen when using these web browsers, Save functions don't seem to save correctly or web page loads are not complete, log in page fails to appear correct. Use of FF seems to be the best browser to manage the router. Other browsers should be the same I presume.

7. The use of ABE while gaming seems to lower the gaming signal in game and the game status signal on Xbox Live. For example, when ABE is enabled, users may see 3 Yellow signal bars in the games status information while playing the game. If ABE is disabled, users see 4 Green signal bars for the game status information which is preferred. This may effect other gaming platforms as well. Xbox was tested for this report.

8. Incorrect Identification
Device: Google Chromecast is recognized as Linux
Activity: SiriusXM audio streaming is recognized as Web Video

9. After the router reboots and the time runs out on the reboot status page, it takes another 10-15 seconds for a Mac Book Pro wireless to regain the WiFi connection. May effect other device platforms as well.

After reading the current list, there is only one that sort of touches on one bug

The time out is too short, I will be reading a settings page and thinking about what I want to do on it and by the time I start to type in or select the options I want and click save settings the page says time out when I try to save.  Then I have to enter all of the settings again, feeling rushed while doing it.

I should be able to leave the page open for at least 10-15 minutes before it times out when changing settings

There are security standards that dictate how the web browser and the routers UI interact. The time out is a security standard that seems to be in place and D-Link has to follow this. This is not a bug.

DHCP reserved IP addresses of 25 is not enough.  I would like at least 50 DHCP reserved IP addresses.  Cisco support stated their new E series routers all support up to 50 DHCP reservations.

Thanks for the input. I'll add it to the list.

FYI about more "granular" input for SB. SB is new to the router world for the DGL series. From what I understand it's supposed to automatically figure out priorities for devices and applications. D-Link wanted to simplify the router operations and processing. I presume that having a more custom user input maybe not be featured with SB nor maybe designed for it.

Will see what happens on next FW update.

Thanks for posting.

As others say, I think the current list is a great start. I'll add the following:

Feature Requests:
  • More granular StreamBoost control. In the 4500 I could define a port range to manually override GameFuel's automatic detection; I don't see any similar option here. I'd also love a simple numeric output of QoS level to aid in troubleshooting like isolating and optimizing traffic for a particular game, similar to the 4500.
  • I just want to reinforce key points others have brought up including the quick user timeout, short log pages, IPv6, NTP, and the fact we're still hitting silly resource limits identical to the 4500, like MAC entries. (For the record, above someone mentioned 24; I can only hit 10 - do MAC entries share a resource pool with something else?)
  • I miss the inline documentation of the 4500!

Bugs (I'm running v1.01):
  • After disabling ABE, the manual Download and Upload entry boxes are not accurate. I have a 60/5 Mbps connection. I enter 60/5 into those boxes and run a speed test: I get 50/4. I hit "Test Bandwidth" and it gives me results around 70/6. For the hell of it I put 70/6 in those boxes and run a speed test: I get my proper 60/5 Mbps.

Basically, I've found the 5500 to take more from the DIR line than the DGL line, which is a bloody shame. Bring back the power user options from the 4500!

11. 500 - Internal Server Error - Seen after several days of being online, no user interaction with the routers web page then attempting to access the routers web page. Internet access is still functional. Unable to access the routers web page. Router must be power cycled. Mac and Windows.

12. After disabling ABE, the manual Download and Upload entry boxes are not accurate.

Feature Requests:
1. Wireless Status page (Status section). SSID/MAC Address/IP Address/Mode/Rate (Mbps)/Signal (%).   Very helpful in seeing the wireless rate and signal information, but also helpful to see if any unwanted connections are active.

2. Advanced Wireless Page Additional tweaks, short GI, neighbor protection.

3. Larger logs page Very tiny window, DGL 4300/4500 was much longer + wider and easier to read.

4. Full Device Info Status page.

5. Special Applications page.

6. IPv6 support.

7. Automatically filling in ports when an application is selected. On the 4500 when selected xbox live it would fill in the ports on this one you have to know what ports to open.

8. Advanced Routing Add Route to WAN and LAN like DGL 4500.

9. Missing DDNS feature - Reviewed by D-Link. Feature add possibly forth coming.

10. DLNA certification.

11. NTP Time Services and options.

12. NTFS hard drive support for media streaming. I confirmed that NTFS does work on the DGL-5500.
WD My Book 2007 2Tb NTFS using Mfr RAID for Space option.

13. Add router model, HW and FW rev information to the log in page please.

14. Add StreamBoost update information to D-Links DGL-5500 main web site page for users to get information and notification on when StreamBoost is updated.

15. DHCP reserved IP addresses of 25 is not enough.  Would like at least 50 DHCP reserved IP addresses.  Even the D-link DIR-655 has 50.

16. Longer router web page timeout before the page auto exits. Would be nice to view the live data tracking and operations before it times out in the web browser.

17. More granular StreamBoost control. In the 4500 I could define a port range to manually override GameFuel's automatic detection; I don't see any similar option here. I'd also love a simple numeric output of QoS level to aid in troubleshooting like isolating and optimizing traffic for a particular game, similar to the 4500.

18. Inline documentation of the 4500.

Bugs:
1. Improve 5Ghz wireless range.

2. Improve StreamBoost operation with ISP modem and services. Down and Up link speeds are reduced when SB or Auto Estimation is enabled.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=55034.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=55034.0)

DHCP reserved IP addresses of 25 is not enough.  I would like at least 50 DHCP reserved IP addresses.  Cisco support stated their new E series routers all support up to 50 DHCP reservations.

I'd like to see a more user friendly stream boost priorities page. For instance, let me key in a number next to the device and have it immediately move to that spot in the priority list. At the very least, a move to top button. Any time I turn off stream boost and then re-enable it or restore defaults to apply new firmware, I have to take each device that I want higher in the list and click, up, up, up until I get to the top. It's a lot of unnecessary clicking.

I would like an area where I can see all of the supported applications, what ports they use, and what information is collected for each one in more detail, when the database was last updated.

I would also like a way to allow users to submit some of this information back to dlink to help improve the frequency of updates.

I would like Playstation 4 support as well as Battlefield 4 support on the ps4

Bug: 1.11B03NA - allows entry of invalid admin password that subsequently fails login authentication

Configuring a 16 character admin password results in subsequent login authentication failures and requires factory restore and reconfiguration to correct.

Device should prevent entry of an admin password that subsequently will not pass login authentication.

Note: 16 character passwords worked with 1.01.

Additional suggestions:

1) Make the admin timeout configurable.
Particularly annoying to have "save settings" fail, after manually entering a bunch of manual dhcp reservations.

2) Reduce time required for complicated manual configurations.
Allow more apply settings later, rather than so many repeated countdowns.

3) Show the interface that a device is connected on -- ethernet, 2.4 GHz, or 5 GHz.

4) When displaying/selecting a device, show the dhcp reservation host name rather than "UNKNOWN".

5) Guest network.  (Gamers also have friends and family visit).

6) Change daylight savings time default start/end dates to NA typical.

4) When displaying/selecting a device, show the dhcp reservation host name rather than "UNKNOWN".
Not Added. The "UNKNOWN" status is just the routers handling of what it can't identify the host name value on the device when handshaking with the device, when the "HOSTNAME" value is not present or is not supported on the device, the router reports it as a "unknown" for host name. You need to set a host name value on all supporting devices before the router will pass this info into the host name value on the router.

5) Guest network.  (Gamers also have friends and family visit).
Added, Thank you. Model Series NOTE: Prior DGL series routers did not have a GZ function as this series is mainly a “Gaming” router. GZ features are on most DIR series routers.GZ may interfere with GameFuel or SB processing if users would be connected. I personally would not want any GZ traffic effecting game play and router processing for game play.

6) Change daylight savings time default start/end dates to NA typical.

Here is the motivation for this request:
1) Some devices don't allow entry of a device name.
2) Some device names don't appear on the DGL5500.  PCs, ipad, and iphone device/system names all show up on the DGL5500.  PS3 doesn't appear to work, all display as Playstation 3.
3) Privacy.  Even if the DGL5500 will show the device name, some would prefer their devices that might be used on other networks -- hotspots -- have a vanilla device name for privacy.

Please reconsider allowing association of a device name with a mac address.  The DHCP reservation table already provides a logical place for this - enter a mac address, ip address, and desired device name.

Please re-read the response...There maybe some devices that the FW and HOSTNAME handshaking can not detect. In this case you'll need to compare the MAC address on the router with the address visually either on the device or in the devices network settings.

Only some of the DGL5500 pages show the device mac address.
For example "My network", mouse over a device and it provides the mac address and additional information.

However, there are pull down menus that show just the device name.
See "Statistics", "Usage by Time" and click on "All Devices"...
A large number of devices with name "undefined" and "UNKNOWN" typically appear.
Without a unique device name the statistics per device feature (when it works) will be difficult to use.

Not all pages will will the MAC address. MAC address should be displayed on the Setup/Networking page.

Are the UKNOWNS being displayed under the Statistics page have a set reserved IP address, Host Name and a Host Name value on the device? IT's possible that maybe Statistics is also dependent upon the device having a host name value inputted on the device or that Statistics relies on product ID name maybe which is a hidden ID name on the device.

Please post screen captures of the sections in question...

Thank you for the feed back. We will check the WAN Ping feature. As for DMZ, ICMP responses are not supported at all for DMZ. Questions about this, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Hardware: DGL-5500A1    There was only 1 version of this router, according to wikidevi.com
Firmware Version :     1.13 , 19, Dec, 2014  ( new upgrade today, not fully tested yet)
Region: Ottawa, Canada
ISP Service: TekSavvy DSL 15/10
ISP Modem: RG505n in bridged mode
VDSL2 uses pppoe with DHCP included for WAN ip
To get a ping reply from the WAN, I currently use an ASUS RT-N10P router between the modem and the DGL-5500 router.
A LAN ssh server would do the trick too, but would be a manual hack in the firewall tables.
Thanks

From a security perspective, the DGL-5500 works perfectly as the WAN router.  www.grc.com shows a perfect score of no open ports or ping replies showing up.  However, I need at least a ping reply from the WAN router in order to serve up Steam game servers and maintain a Hurricane Electric IPV6 tunnel.  If I use an Asus RT-N10P (updated with Shibby's TomatoUSB firmware), there is a 'Respond to ICMP ping' feature which can be turned on; grc.com shows all ports stealthed (green) and ping replies.   If I use openwrt firmware on the WAN router, from grc.com, I get all ports closed (blue) and pings replies.  Either blue or green grc.com results are okay with me, as long as there are ping replies for Steam and Hurricane Electric's tunnelbroker.net networking features to work.

What happens if you put the 5500 into the DMZ on the Asus router?

Have you tried setting up any Virtual Server rules to see if this feature may help with gaming and when the 5500 is the primary host router?

Ya, not sure if WAN ping respond will be added. I'll forward this to D-Link. I'll post if I get some information.

I tried DMZ and port forwards, with no success on the DGL-5500.  I noticed that the DIR-810L I picked up on Boxing week at Staples had the WAN ping reply option, so it is now running as the WAN router.  I also lucked out and got the DIR-810L to work with TSI's IPv6 beta program, except that the prefix delegation doesn't work with other (openwrt)routers.

Feauture requests:
1. Devices in My Network that have a reserved IP can use the name saved alongside the reservation instead of their announced name. Some devices announce a stupid name that's to do with their network chipset, and others don't seem to announce correctly at all and come up as unknown/blank.

This feature would work well with 3 options:
a) use announced name/"off"
b) use reserved name where announced name is unknown or blank/"auto"
c) always use reserved name/"always"

2. For each IP reservation, ability to use auto classification of the device type as it already is, or to manually choose from the list of available classifications within streamboost and lock the reservation to that device type.  I'm have some devices on my network that don't get classified correctly or at all.

If you're reserving an IP, chances are the device attached to the mac address isn't going to change so there's not really any downside to offering this feature.  Wifi dongles and portable NICs are an obvious exception but just leave these on "auto" and all will be fine.

Added to list. Thank you for your feed back.

Trying to help close the last few bugs reported if possible. The DGL-5500 is at end game and I presume D-Link may not be pushing any more FW updates. Unless maybe there are some items we can help them complete. Please help with any information regarding these last few bug items and let me know if they are still happening so I can let D-Link know before the officially close development.  :-\
