Title: How to retrieve data when DNS 321 Nas enclosure is broken
Post by: telesamad on May 16, 2009, 01:12:57 PM
Hi...what if the enclosure goes bad and you need to access your data? I tried taking the drive out and hooking up with a windows XP machine. I hoped it would recognize the drive as a foreign disk and i would be import that. Unfortunately looks like the file system is totally unknown to windows and it does not know how to handle it.

Whats your opinion? looks like I have to get another DNS-321 enclosure. How about if I get a DNS-323 and put the 2 drives from my dns-321 = will dns 323 recognize my drives?

Just a thought.
Thanks

If you install an EXT2 file system driver for winXP (http://www.fs-driver.org/)
then you can access your DNS-321 disk.

Don't just take my word for it.  As with any disaster recover plan, you should try
out this solution before a failure occurs, to verify this technique works for you,
in your environment.  RAID level and OS patches could effect your success.
