Title: Need help with some settings
Post by: drtest on August 17, 2013, 01:53:09 PM
Just bought a DLink 825 B1 router with 2.05NA Firmware. Wanted some help setting this up with the best settings in place. I have two xboxs that will connect to live at the same time. Also should I update the firmware or leave it alone

You give up on the 5500? Just curious...

We use this, works well:
Gaming and QoS for XBL (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0)

Keep whats loaded for now.

Yes I did for now. I have had tons of issues with it.

I have some questions regarding the link you sent me.

Traffic Shaping on or off? And if on why when it can't detect my speed.
Automatic Uplink on or off? And if on same reason as above since I have a 50 meg down connection and a 10 meg up.
Why Dynamic Fragmentation off?

Is it possible to just leave QOS disabled and not use dhcp reservation?

SPI on on or off?

Why Both UDP/TCP Endpoint Filtering set to Endpoint Independent? Why not leave them at default values?

Why Enable anti-spoof checking? Mine is disabled by default.

You mention port fordwarding in yoru guide but I thought you can't use upnp and port forwarding together. I also don't get this part when you have upnp enabled. That should handle that alone.

Sorry for all the question. Just curious.

Automatic Uplink on or off? And if on same reason as above since I have a 50 meg down connection and a 10 meg up. Older DIR series routers can be effected by a 2Mb upLink limitation. I don't know why so don't ask. There has been many debate over it. So with users with higher than 2Mb uplinks, it may or may not work. You'll need to test to see what works best for you.

Why Dynamic Fragmentation off? Only needed on ISP speed services lower than 1Mb.

Is it possible to just leave QOS disabled and not use dhcp reservation? Yes as long and uPnP is enabled.

SPI on on or off? Up to you, should effect XBL or gaming. I notice that SPI is disabled by default now days on new routers.

Why Both UDP/TCP Endpoint Filtering set to Endpoint Independent? Why not leave them at default values? Seen issues with some connections thru the router and some applications now working right. You can test to see if default works for you or not.

Why Enable anti-spoof checking? Mine is disabled by default. Just to be safe if you have concerned about people attempting to ping your router. If your not overly concerned, leave it off.

You mention port forwarding in yoru guide but I thought you can't use upnp and port forwarding together. I also don't get this part when you have upnp enabled. That should handle that alone. Thats correct however PF mentioned there is used in PC gaming scenarios mostly. Ya, if PF is used, uPnP needs to be disabled.

What is the latest firmware for this router? The webpage says 2.07 but I see somethings say 2.09 in the forum.

Yes v2.09 is and thats on the Canada site I believe.
I would run what is loaded for now. v2.06 fixed some IPv6 issues, v2.07 fixed WPS, v2.09 Fixed Tools -> Time -> Set the Date and Time Manually's year to 2037.

If you decide to upgrade, please follow the FW upgrade Process sticky.

Did you mean to say it should not effect XBL or gaming or would it? I only play on Xbox live.

Why Both UDP/TCP Endpoint Filtering set to Endpoint Independent? Why not leave them at default values? Seen issues with some connections thru the router and some applications now working right. You can test to see if default works for you or not.

Does this open you more up to attack by changing this?

Why Enable anti-spoof checking? Mine is disabled by default. Just to be safe if you have concerned about people attempting to ping your router. If your not overly concerned, leave it off.

Have you had any problems with this?

I will follow the guide you sent me in the first post you sent me. Are there any changes you would make since you made that xbox post?

Also I noticed my download speed seems a little low on this router than my asus? Anything you recommend?

Try  SPI, Traffic Shaping and QoS ON and OFF and run speed tests. Ensure other devices are not streaming or gaming whlie testing. Test wired LAN PC. Wireless does not give most accurate results.

What are RX dropped packets? Anything to be worried about?

Received Packets that are dropped. Unless your seeing a ton of dropped packets, no worries.

Are they just ping attacks or something? How many are a ton?

It seems like SPI and traffic shaping are slowing down my download speeds. Anyone else notice this. I have a 50 meg down connection with a 10 up

I've noticed over several different model routers lately that D-Link has been leaving SPI disabled out of the box.
I'm on a 50/2 here with Motorola SB 6120 modem. However, if your on a 10Mb UP, could be that Traffic Shaping isn't really needed.  :-\

Played around with my router settings for awhile I noticed it is multicast all along killing my speed it seems. I get 50 meg down without it on and I go all the way down to 25-35 with it on. Why is multicast so important again?

happens with SPI and Traffic Shaping ON if MC is enabled or disabled?
Title: Re: Need help with some settings
Post by: drtest on August 23, 2013, 12:03:02 PM
SPI On
Traffic Shaping On
Multicast Off
50 meg down
10 up

SPI ON
Traffic Shaping On
Multicast On
25-30 meg down
9 up

Very strange. Is multicast known for speed decrease.

what happens with SPI and TS OFF and MC ON?

Connection drops to 25-30. I did it both ways. Very weird. Multicast known for this?
