Title: Investigating access to router and the data usage
Post by: jroduner on August 23, 2013, 05:39:27 AM
I am hoping that someone can help out with the issue that I have.  I have at least 4 to 6 devices that access the router from time to time and need the ability to log all the access and the amount of data being used.  The problem that I have is that I am unsure why in some instance from day to day their is a spike in the data usage and need the ability to track it.  The following devices access the router at any given time

- iPod
- iPhone
- Laptop
- Desktop
- BlackBerry
- Samsung Galaxy Mobile Phone

Is this option available within this router, where it will provide all the info that I am looking for to help me determine what may be causing some of the spike.

Thanks,

Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

You can do some data tracking as to what devices are going to what sites with the use of Access Controls and logging there.

If you are having problems with certain devices, I would recommend using QoS and setting up some rules to set those devices to a low priority however they can still get some Internet and QoS will ensure that other users will no longer be effected by them if they seem to be hogging Internet band width.

You can review this for an example to see how xbox live is set up and Other Devices rule is used:
DIR-645/835/868L/865L/826L Gaming and QoS for XBL (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44869.0)

You could use the Other Devices rule as an example to help manage devices on your router.

DIR series routers don't have data usage tracking. The new DGL-5500 series now has some data usage features that are new. This router is a gaming router and is being marketed for that kind of use.
