Title: 825 locks up after updating to 1.11 formware
Post by: kenargo on May 18, 2009, 09:53:43 AM
3 days since I have updated to the latest firmware (1.11) and 3 days I have found my router locked up (needing to power off in order to get access).  Has anyone experiences same and found a solution/cause?

I would STRONGLY suggest against updating firmware as the readme indicates there is no way back once you do; at least until this issue is identified and fixed.

Yes I am seeing the same problem as are others.  You can read the freezing router thread in the 655 forum:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5281.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5281.0)

Or here is anotehr thread over at dslreports:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22332904-DIR-825-Firmware-v111b01-beta-Released (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22332904-DIR-825-Firmware-v111b01-beta-Released)

I also never had this problem until upgrading to 1.11 and now I can make it maybe 2 or 2.5 days before it hangs up and I have to cycle the power.  I did however today turn off dns relay as mentioned in the first thread above.  It's too early to tell if the helps the lock up issue, but the machines are much faster getting to pages on the internet thats for sure and even a page I serve on a local machine is loading much faster.  I will hold my final judement for a few more days though to see if the speed stays and if it does not lock up.

When you upgraded to FW 1.11, did you reload a saved config or did you reload your settings manually?
Title: Re: 825 locks up after updating to 1.11 formware
Post by: cerjzc on May 19, 2009, 10:36:21 AM
I have tried both.  I reset it and restored all the settings by entering them manually and I have also tried restoring them from a saved config file.  Both times I have had it hang up and everytime for me at least it has been in less than 3 days.

If thats the case, contact technical support and request a replacement.

I experienced the same problem. After updating the firmware to 1.11 my new DIR-825 became unresponsive after 48 hours (could not log in). Powering off and on again fixed the problem. However it failed again, 48 hours later. So I returned it to the store.

No good, mine continues to die every day since the firmware upgrade.  Trying to get tech support; hopefully they can solve it.

Note: After update I reset to factory and reloaded the saved configuration file.  I've redone the procedure a few times and no go.

Reset back to factory and build configuration from scratch. If you have a lot of customer configurations write it down or do screen shots of each custom settings then enter in manually from a fresh reset to factory.

Well I am still running mine with DNS relay off and it was running great up until a power outage 2 nights ago which reset it.  It is still working great and web lookups have never been faster as well as web browsing.  I still need to give it another 24 hours or so to see if it can make it longer than all of the other tries with DNS relay on.  I will report back either way in a day or two.

ok, so do we think it's related to loading an older config file after the flash?

Any word from DLink support yet?

I got an email asking me to downgrade but before I do that I am asking if they really mean it.  I've had contacts with support where the person where not knowledgable and I wanted to be 100% sure I don't brick my router be trying something that I've been told by support not to try.

Update; the support person (via email) changed their mind when I asked 'are you sure?' (twice) and I suggested that if the router became unusable as a result of trying to downgrade that I would expect a replacement.

I was told by an L3 tech yesterday that this is a common issue and they had a meeting (scheduled shortly after my call) to discuss with mgmt what to do about this.  I haven't heard back yet from L3 tech.

I'd presume that's because the firmware download page states that v1.11 (once installed) doesn't allow the firmware to be downgraded.

http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DIR%2D825

This small fact along with the problems other users are currently experiencing has prevented me from installing this firmware update.

I too upgraded to 1.11 last week and I am getting lockups every 24 hours. I have done a hard reset of the router and started from scratch twice... still doesn't fix the problem.

I am going to try the "turn off DNS Relay" as suggested by someone else on this forum and see if that fixes it.

Also, I know if says you can't downgrade the firmware... has anyone actually confirmed this?

If ANYONE has a solution, PLEASE HELP. I am about to say goodbye to D-Link as my home networking company of choice if I can't get quick resolution to this.

I was also wondering about that.  As I recall, is it on the page where it says "DHCP" enabled? I was wondering if you need to disable DHCP to be able disable DNS relay and I wasn't sure if I wanted to do that at this time.

Support is a joke; the diag process the specialist walked me through was to change my computer to some made-up static IP, then reset the router and then change the router address to another made-up IP.  The router and computer IP addresses where in 2 different subnets so of coarse the computer wouldn't connect to the router after that but the tech 'knew what he was doing" and continued to tell me so even though I tried to explain to him the issue with his configuration.

Well, in the end I am getting a replacement router from Dlink and hopefully they don't load the 1.11 firmware.

Over 4 days with DNS relay disabled and so far no hang-ups or slowness.  With DNS relay on I couldn' usually make it 2 days.

I'm having this problem right at this moment. Some web pages fail or are taking a really long time to load. Also, I can't log into my router or I can log in but I can't navigate any of it's settings. This also happened last night within the past 12 hours and also once about a week ago for the first time. Since it's happening more frequently, I decided to write about it. I'm new to all this and I'm not sure what's going on, but pulling the power chord fixes it. I'm using the latest firmware.

Dlink,

Please address this issue as there are many of us with this problem and it is becoming very annoying that our networks that we manage are going down because of this.

Same issue here.  Router was upgraded to 1.11NA perfectly.  Settings were uploaded and everything is fine for about 2 days.  Then the router locks up and is unresponsive.  Have to pull power to reset it as it won't allow me to login.  This happens about every 2 days.  PLEASE FIX THIS D-LINK ASAP!!  MAJOR SHOWSTOPPING BUG IN 1.11NA FIRMWARE!!

After finding and reading all these reports of problems with the new firmware updates (that you cannot back off to older firmware versions) I am deeply saddened and maddened after buying Dlink DIR-825 A1 and Dlink DIR-655 A4 units.  They work just okay with the old firmware out of the box.  But to get the new features and fixes, introduces new bugs and problems.  So that is terrible indeed and frustrating to all Dlink customers.  How do they stay in business and keep selling stuff like this to the masses!  (I am not picking on Dlink here, it is the same with all of the other major and minor router maker brands too!)

It is the quality of the help to develope and maintain the firmware code as well as the quality of the marketing decision makers to push and release garbage before it is ready for prime time.  Sad state of greedy affairs brings the whole world down.

This is my first D-Link product. It hasn't been too long since they released v1.11 and I can patiently wait a little longer for the next release. Hopefully, they're taking their time to properly fix these problems.

Same problem here, too, with DIR-825 A1 and firmware 1.11.

Prior to this firmware, I never had to reboot the router, but now it stops working after a couple of days and I have to reset it physically to get it working again. I can't access the admin page via IP address to do it remotely when this happens.

I am using DNS relay and I did reload my config settings after firmware upgrade (rather than config from scratch).

This is absurd.  I received an RMA ID, but I have a SIMPLE question about the stupid process. They require proof of purchase, well, I bought my 825 from the now defunct Circuit City and don't have my receipt. I can't get through to the RMA department, I've waited on hold a cumulative of about 1 hour, been disconnected 4 times through the automated garbage and hung up on twice by actual RMA specialists.  Both times, they took my RMA ID and then put me on hold, where I was disconnected AGAIN.  It is really difficult for me not to start cussing up a storm.  I called the number AGAIN, and hit option 3 for RMA, and 1 to speak to a specialist.  I was on hold for another 5 minutes, then it was completely silent for another 10.  For some reason, it then went through a list of options that were completely irrelevant to the options and then I was transferred to TECH SUPPORT!  What the h**l is wrong with the DLink phone system?  That dude told me to call the number for the 1000th time, hit 3, then 1, and be transferred to an extension, why the heck can't I punch in the extension instead of waiting on hold AGAIN!?

I apologize for ranting but this is just ridiculous.

edit: thanks for contacting me so quickly Lycan.

I went the RMA route and just connected to the RMA website; i figure that I have the router and that should be proof that I purchased one but after receiving the replacement I send the replacement back and kept my upgraded one (disabling DNS Forwarding does appear to work, I can report with certainty).

When I opened the replacement and inspected it I noticed it had scratches and was somewhat dirty (I suspect they send refurbished units).  Well, since I know how well I took care of mine I chose to keep mine and live without DNS forward for now than to have a refurbished one that may have who-knows what issues, especially since it would be immediately out of warranty.

These are the types of errors that seem to be associated with the problem for me:

...I had been using a saved configuration but rebuilt it from scratch after reading the forum. I've been up for 4 days so far, but I was up for 6 days between reoccurences in the past.

Based on what kenargo said, I should have waited to get my replacement before sending out mine.  I hope mine isn't a refurb unit, and that it doesn't have these problems.  Honestly, if it ships with 1.11NA I'm going to be really angry especially if its still A1 hardware.  On the other hand, if it does show up with 1.01, I'll just leave it at that until a better firmware is released (hopefully soon).

You shouldn't have to manually enter anything.  Just either restart the devices or release/renew dhcp.

Good to know... thanks. I assumed I would have to manually enter my ISP's DNS servers... didn't realize it would distribute them via DHCP. I've turned it off now so we'll see how it goes.

So many days and still NOTHING!!  DLINK obviously doesn't give a hoot about customers!

I'm sorry but I switched to DLINK because the other guy released a router that was unable to keep a connection more than a couple hours and DLink was worlds better but now DLINK locks everyone into a version (because they don't allow downgrade) and then the solution (found by customers and not DLINK engineers) is to disable a feature in the router (which I used in many devices in my network).  This is not acceptable!!!

If the company I worked for did this and allowed it to continue for this long we would be in court and maybe that is what it will take here as well.  I'm sure somewhere there is a lawyer thinking the same thing and I for one will strongly think about joining if I where contacted and that is saying something because usually I wouldn't.

So D-Link definitely messed this up, but if you disable dns relay, you don't have to manually enter dns on all the machines.  Worst case you just restart the device although most of the time you can just connect/disconnect.

I am not sure why so many people are oposed to turning dns relay off.  Obviously you shouldn't need to turn it off but atleast the router works if you do.

Its also strange how the mods have been silent within the last couple days.

I am also a little concerned at how quiet everything is.  I set up the replacement I got from DLink and for some reason the 5GHz band is practically unusable unless I'm less than 50ft away, hope this one doesn't die.  I've had to deal with so many RMAs and other crap these past two weeks, if one more piece of electronic equipment dies on me in the next week, I'm going to explode.  So far, I've lost a router, a cell phone (sent two dead replacements by Alltel), a DVD burner, and two fans in my computer (one case fan, one PSU fan).  This is absurd, perhaps there is some sort of cosmic interference going on.

Anywho, I'd like a new firmware please.  I'm stuck on 1.01 until this gets fixed.  I turned off DNS relay on my old 1.11 and that didn't help me, it locked up after a week, so I'll just wait for the new firmware. (hope it happens soon)

Well, I disabled DNS relay over a week ago, but this morning my router froze up and I couldn't log in. I wonder if it's the fact I keep Guest Zone access freely available for anyone to use and there possibly can be up to ten people or more wirelessly connected at one time and screwing things up. Anyway, I've gotten used to simply pulling the power cord by now so I guess it isn't a big deal anymore.

In the web admin page, if you go to Setup (top), then Network Settings (left).. it should be in the "Router Settings" section on that page.

I also had to disable WMM and Short GI.   I use this router with a Media extender and would run the Tune Network and just watch the network jump from all green bars to 0 bars every few seconds.....   I am on Firmware 1.11NA....   Just another thought for anyone having issues...

This option is under Advanced, Advanced Wireless.....

When you guys upgraded the firmware did you reset the unit and also did you try loading a config file from previous firmware?

Also how is the wireless environment? Any cordless phones?

Initially, I loaded a saved configuration but after seeing the suggestions here, I reset the configuration to defaults and had the same problem (with the DNS relay enabled). With DNS relay disabled, I've been going OK for more than a week now.

My wireless environment... I have a 5.8 GHz (both ways) cordless phone (but I disable the 5.8GHz band). But, I am not having any wireless issues with this firmware... just general stability issues seemingly related to the above. The router just stops working properly after a few days with DNS relay turned on, and that seems to be about the size of it.

I have a 6.0 GHZ phone so there is no issues there....  Initially I just upgraded and went from there and could not even connect.  Then I reset to factory and rebuilt config from scratch...  Initially I had issues with once I made the SSID invisible I could not even ping anything that was connected via wireless...  I went in and disabled DNS relay and things improved some but was still seeing inconsistencies in the wireless that were not there before.  This is when I disabled the WMM and the Short GI...  Things have improved some... Connecting at 243 as opposed to 270+ before the upgrade.

Just joined the forum to get in on this Board. Captcha was "FCK UP". Funny.

I am having these issues as well with HW A1 Firmware 1.11NA. I am using 2.4GHz as g/n, and 5GHz as n, on separate SSIDs. I have a Printer and Bridge that are always on and connected to the router (one on each SSID). I live in the city so theres no telling what kind of EMF is around. Both SSIDs are fully secured however.

When I upgraded the firmware, I allowed the router to reboot itself. Following that I loaded a config file that was created using the previous firmware version. Following that I noticed no difference in performance until 2 days later internet was crawling slow, and I couldn't access the admin page. After unplugging and plugging in the router, it worked fine. Problems reoccurs every few days. Following many suggestions on this board drawn this period out to 4-5 days now.

I loved this product before this firmware. Please work hard at this and find a solution.

We will make note of all the findings in this thread. In the mean time, have you tried what others found to work around this issue?

Wouldn't it make a whole lot of sense to pull the 1.11 firmware off the site until this is fixed?  I hate to see new people have their routers screwed up with this.

I've had a couple of friends buy this router lately and I've advised them very strongly to stick with 1.01.  It was a great router on that firmware, but an extremely frustrating one on 1.11 (not to mention that email support kept wanting me to do silly stuff even after I pointed them to this thread...to the point I gave up and decided to live with it for a little longer and see if a fix can be delivered).

I've been waiting on the sidelines for awhile now for the firmware issues to be resolved and I start reading users reporting positive results.  I just come back to visit for status on this router and ... not one inch of progress was made...?  I am still on original firmware that came with my DIR-825 A1. What's up at DLINK?

P.S. - Same story goes for my DIR-655 (I own both).  What the heck is going on at DLINK? after all these reports and long time passing... no progress at all?  I am afraid to apply the new firmware versions that cannot be backed off once applied.  So I sit waiting for confirmation o***ood solid stable firmware release.

When is the next new firmware release coming out?  (Also I agree with previous posters. why does'nt DLINK remove that buggy firmware v1.11 that is causing everyone headaches?)

I had to go drag out one of my old Linksys WRT54Gs.. At least it works...

Sad thing is I had a 655 .. It fried shortly after a firmware upgrade.. i sucked it up and thought it was a one off..

Bought one of these.. worked great with a few hickups, saw the wonderfull new firmware post... upgraded.. Poof.. screwed with no way to go back and no further support it appears from Dlink.

Funny thing is i got the firmware and upgraded right away when it came out, then AFTER i installed it they changed the update notes to say it cant be rolled back (might have been 1.10) .

Anyways, if its not fixed soon that will be my last Dlink.. will stick to companies that respond

I wish I had researched the firmware upgrade before I did it, but I would expect a company to be responsible enough to remove something harmful if they were aware of it, and they WERE aware for at least six weeks. The router was great before the update. I suppose that is what I get for trusting a company to do the right thing.

I agree and posted a warning over at the new gdgt.com website on the dir-825 page.

Is there an ETA on when we might see a firmware update to 1.11NA? There are certainly enough users on this thread to beta test a more stable version.

What issues specifically?

Issues with DNS relay?

1.11NA Seems to have addressed my wireless reboot problems vs. 1.01, however I experienced the router lockup issue this morning (or sometime overnight).  All the pretty blinkies were flashing but none of the computers could access the internet or 825 admin page.  Dang, I wanted that log.  I pulled the plug before checking if any other network resources were available.

Just signed up to forum. Been looking for answers to the 825 lockup problem. This helped sooooo much.
I have a basic config with a DSL modem, the 825, and a series of wired and wireless macs and a pc or two. I've had to repower the 825 now on a daily basis. really frustrating.
The fix of turning off the DNS Relay seems to have solved it. I've been running for 4 days now just wonderfully, and faster. I have yet to see any side effects of this, but for now this seems to solved the problem.

Possibly.   After the same problem occurred occurred again (2-3 days between lockups), I disabled DNS Relay this afternoon.

ARRRRGGGGGG!!!! Boo Hoo

Three days ago, I installed the new firmware 1.11NA !!!!! Now it slows to a crawl and drops the internet connection to local only.......

I almost forgot that I even had routers. The router was flawless until this new firmware was installed. I have had to restart it twice and called tech support once! Why? Why did they mess this up?

Tech support suggested that I change the WAN port speed from "Auto 10/100/1000Mbps to 1000 Mbps . (ADVANCED >ADVANCED NETWORK>WAN PORT SPEED) Try this for a couple of days and if that doesn't solve it I have to call them back!!

I have the DIR-825 as my main router with two Linksys WRT54G's (DD-WRT) as repeater bridges. It was a totally maintenance free setup with no restarts or slowdowns.

I am soooooo disappointed.......

Looks like we're on our way to a solution, but I thought that I would add my name to the list of customers that were shut down by the 1.11 firmware.  Unchecking the DNS Forwarding did alleviate the hanging issue, but I am noticing some intermittent DNS failures (may be unrelated) now.

Very much looking forward to the next firmware iteration.

Good reason to check forums like this one and read the experiences of others who've done a firmware update.  Warnings against loading v1.10 or 1.11 have been posted here for months.

It's encouraging to see Ru-Fi-Oh posting again and that there's a fix on the way.  Who'll be the first brave soul to try the new version when available?  :o

Cheers

Like so many others here.... I trusted D-Link to create firmware that would only enhance my user capabilities and experience. I have been using computers, routers, etc. for about 10 years and have never had a negative experience with updating firmware or drivers ..... until lately. Last month, I updated the drivers for my video card and it caused Vista 64 to blue screen. They just said to revert back one update until they fix the issue. So it's not just D-Link with these types of issues. I have learned my lesson and will check from this point on. Who has the time to research every updated driver and firmware? Like you said.... Who will be the first brave soul to try the next update? Shouldn't it be D-Link?

If you're using rev A and are having issues try the new beta.

Most of issues were addressed. Remember the code isn't final. This is to get users back to a working stable firmware. Please provide your feedback in the Beta board for 1.12NAb05

This router is making me crazy.
It's worse than my old netgear wgr614, which I upgraded from exactly because I wanted better coverage and better reliability in my new house.
What happened? The 5ghz range is absolute ****e, can't use it anywhere but inside the room, and while on the 2.4ghz, while it had some initial trouble, it eventually started working great.
Until 2 weekends ago, when it started dropping signals and connections even as close as 10 feet away in the next room. So the only way for this wireless router to work flawlessly is to stand next to it. What's the point then? My old router worked better than this, had better range and better speeds.

It seems what I am getting is what you call "lock up". Am I right?
The odd part is, I am on the A1 hardware, but I haven't updated my firmware, it's still on 1.01.
And I don't know if I can return it to the store, I think the return period might have expired. I can't believe I paid 130 bucks for a router that works worse than my old one.

btw, what is the difference between A1 and B1? Does the B version work better? Should I have gotten that one, meaning I got screwed over when buying the A1 version?

Just an update....

After disabling DNS Relay and setting WAN port speed to 1000Mbps, I have been 4 days without a restart or even a complaint from my wife. I am not sure which corrected my issues but i don't care as long as router continues to work. I also forgot to mention that, after the 1.11,  I was not getting a good list of LAN and Wireless LAN computers. That seems to be normal now as well.

Has anyone tested the 1.12?

First of all upgrade your firmware.. We recently posted beta code and so far people have not had any issues.

The difference between A1 and B1 is B1 is open source.

Well from what I can read on these pages, I am not that brave to beta-test the new firmware.
My problem is that it oftens drops internet connection when you are 10 feet away from the router, and I have isolated the problem to the router, not the adapters nor the internet connection. So I need to move the router to a very uncomfortable place if I need it work better, or suffer these frequent problems. Problems that I did not encounter with the old router.
So when I hear the problems people have had after updating the firmware, I think I'm warranted to wonder if I'm better off staying with the 1.01 rather than testing the beta version a few days after its release.

Arf, I hate calling customer service, it seems that I'm going to have to do that, spending hours on the phone  >:(

Well, I noticed DNS Relay is disabled by default in the latest firmware (1.12) and from all accounts, disabling DNS Relay fixes the issue. To be honest I can't tell the difference when it's enabled or disabled. Also, for those of you who use Port Forwarding and can't view the wirelessly connected clients list, try using Virtual Server instead of Port Forwading and the list should show up.

Other than having to work around a couple issues, everything seems to be working perfectly. For now, the issues with this router seem minor for me, but I'll have to wait and see how things go in the long run.

It sounds like your wireless environment is dirty. Any other 2.4ghz devices in the area?

It sounds like your wireless environment is dirty. Any other 2.4ghz devices in the area?

none, except for the dozen other networks I can pick up :P :D
Nothing unusual for New York.

I resolved my situation by having the modem+router moved to a different room, I don't have a wired connection anymore, so I had to buy an adapter for the desktop, but at least the wireless signal is stronger all around. Of course, I could have done that by keeping my old router, I bought this one, supposedly stronger, so that I wouldn't have to resort to this, but whatever.
Speed and signal aside, the most troublesome problem however was a frequent loss of the internet despite still being linked to the router on the wireless connection when being over 15 feet away, whilst everything worked great on the wired line or for wireless users near the router.

I am not sure if the firmware updates resolved this, or the signal boost caused by the new router location. Whatever it is, what used to be once every half-hour has now only rarely occurred, so I'm happy.
I do miss the shareport option however.

I take it all back. 1st, the wirelessly connected clients list stopped working even thought I used Virtual Server. 2nd, after over a week I couldn't load webpages and my router became somewhat unresponsive even though DNS Relay was off. 3rd, when I first installed the 1.12 firmware, I flushed the NVRAM and installed  1.12 and I'm am pretty sure DNS Relay was off, but when I loaded defaults and restarted, DNS Relay was enabled by default. I think that's sad considering lockups are a feature when it's enabled. Finally, I'd like to say I don't know what to expect with this router. It always breaks and is unreliable! I paid a lot of money so please fix it!

Edit: It turns out when I enabled captcha it broke the wirelessly connected clients list. : \
