Title: Can't configure DIR-826L as WAP
Post by: jimerman on September 23, 2013, 06:47:34 AM
I have a home network through AT&T U-Verse (using a 2Wire modem).  I want to create a WAP such that the DHCP on the 2Wire is the DHCP for the network, and the 826L provides WAP through the dual bands (at N speeds).  I need to do this for several reasons, I don't want G network speeds with the 2Wire, and I need to be on the same domain and subnet for the devices.

So I followed the instructions on Page 11 of the manual - disable UPnP, disable DHCP, change the LAN address to one on the U-Verse network (192.168.1.x), and connect one of the LAN ports on the 826L to a LAN port on the 2Wire.

What happens is, after rebooting following config changes, the devices will connect to the DLINK SSID, but will not obtain an IP address.  When I connect a computer with a static IP address and log into the DLINK admin page, then do the ping tool, it cannot ping the 2Wire gateway.

I have used Reset on the bottom of the DLINK several times, gone through reconfig, and sometimes it works for a few minutes, but eventually DHCP clients stop getting addresses assigned.

Any advice?  What am I missing?

I'm in US Midwest.  I'm a little surprised by the disclaimer at the top of this link, since these steps that I followed were indicated in the DIR-826L User Manual on Page 10.  So, yes, in retrospect what I want is a WAP since double-NAT seems to be giving me a headache with this router.  I'll have to plan a transition to the DAP-series models to resolve my VPN issues, but actually I think that will get me a better setup than I have now anyway.  Thanks for your advice, it is much appreciated.

Yes, the disclaimer if for those routers that D-Link hasn't specified routers like the 826L. I'll have to give this a try with mine. I have used it mostly in router mode and don't think I've tried it in wired AP mode. It should work...ensure you are connecting LAN to LAN and turning everything OFF on the 826L accept for WiFi. I'll test this out after work today...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Ok, I have my 826L in wired AP mode connected to my DIR-657 with it's wireless disabled letting the 826L handle all the wireless. I'm currently connected with my Mac Book Pro on the 2.4Ghz radio typing this message. It's working.  ;D
