Title: SharePort Ver 1.1.0 R1 Will not automatically connect for printing
Post by: Croket on May 20, 2009, 01:50:43 PM
I am wondering if anyone has a fix for the Shareport Utility not automatically connecting for printing.
I updated the firmware on my DIR655 to ver 1.31 witch requires you to also upgrade the shareport utility to ver 1.1.0

It seems there is a bug in the utility or the firmware. Once installed the utility is able to “see” my printer (hp LaserJet 1012) and connect to it with the connect button, however, I want to be able to connect to the printer automatically (like with ver 1.14) as opposed to manually hitting the connect then disconnect button. I have 4 computers in my household and having to manually do this is a pain!

When I select the option to automatically connect for printing, the configure button becomes available and prompts me to click on the bottom to configure a driver.  When I do, a small box opens and a message appears that states is it "checking for the driver, install it if it isn't already installed". the window stays open with that message and does nothing else.  This symptom accurse on all 4 machines.

After spending a couple of hours on the phone with D-link and various support personnel,  and performing  different possible solutions, I was finally told by a “software specialist” that it will not work and I will have to manually connect every time I want to print.
I am having a problem understanding why this feature will not work if it is listed as an option in the printer properties within the SharePort utility.

Has anyone encountered this problem? if so is there a fix?  C.barbosa@comcast.net

Has anyone found a resolution for this?  I'm on Vista 64 with firmware 1.31 and SharePort v 1.1.0 R1, seeing the same symptoms with an HP PSC2350.  Also, when I try to manually connect it just goes back to available status in SharePort.

I am checking the site periodically in hopes that Dlink adds an update to the Firmware or shareport utility but they haven't "officially", however, they are working on ver 1.32 beta firmware which is now available for download.
Today I got around to flashing my router with the Beta version and so far I have connected one of my machine to my printer and the connection seems to be holding so far, however I'm still not able to configure the auto connect feature, I'm having the same exact problem. Hopefully the final release of 1.32 will resolve that issue.

Let me know if anyone else  has installed the beta version and if it seems to help.

More bad new,the 1.32 beta version did not fix the connection issue,  after a couple of hours since the flash and a reboot of the router, I'm still not able to connect to my printer from either of my 3 machines (2 vista's and 1 XP).

I didn't have problem before upgraded my DGL-4500 to v1.20 and SharPort to v1.10, but now I have the same printing issue as all of you.  :'(

No problem here on  the DIR655. When configured to print/connect automatically, you might want to set the delay a bit longer. If the printer is in hibernate/power save mode it need more time before the connection is closed again.

In your case, a complete deinstall of Shareport and printer driver might work. Some printer drivers attach to a USB port and when Shareport is installed afterwards, the printerdriver may not bind correctly to the virtual USB port. So try this: reinstall the driver again when the printer is already connceted to the route: install shareport and install the printer driverShareport

I as well have an HP 1012, and a DIR-825, it would connect manually, but now it does not even do that. I purchased this router because of the SharePort feature.

also i did everything asked like setting the firewall etc.

I am having the same problem with my DGL-4500. SharePort Ver 1.1.0 R1 and Firmware 1.20NA,  2009/04/27.
The SharePort with printing capabilities was the reason I chose D-link over Linksys. It appears that I should have gone with Linksys. After spending an hour and fifteen minute talking to a tech rep in India, who wasn't even aware there was a North American version of the software, I hung up without learning a thing.

I am also having problems connecting to USB devices plugged into the router. The devices are seen in the SharePort utility, but not accessible to any of my computers. I have to reboot the router in order to connect to USB device.

After reviewing quite a few of the posts in this forum, I have come to the conclusion that if someone from D-Link actually reads any of the posts, they very rarely respond. The forum appears to be a self help and rant venting vehicle designed to keep the users occupied while D-Link does nothing.

My feelings exactly!

They take a good product and instead of making it better they cripple it making it less functional. I've been buying D-Link products for years but that trend is going to stop. Whether they fix this issue or not, when it comes time to replace this router it will not be another D-Link product. I wouldn't mind so much if they would at least admit there are some issues with that version of firmware and or SharePort. They "say" they can't reproduce this problem in the lab so it's not really a problem. WTF!

a. Dlink does reply
b. this is indeed a self help board
c. new firmwares with fixes are published.

So I assume that "they do nothing is a bit exaggerated, wouldn't you say.

And being an IT pro....if there's is no reproduction of an issue there is no way of telling where to look. Just think about it a minute and you'll see that makes good sense Router features do tend to have dependencies and so. But hey, I'm just into IT (no Dlink affiliation) , what do I know  ;)

IMHO the latest firmware is just a placebo to shut everybody up. As far as I can tell it doesn't fix anything. But I'm not an IT pro so what do I know. I'm just another in a long list of unsatisfied customers with a product that doesn't work as advertised.

Reproduce this:

Fresh install of windows xp, all updates installed, windows firewall off, HP LaserJet 1320, DIR-628 with latest firmware and SharePort 1.1.0. "Connect automatically only for printing" still won't work. Same with Vista. I've tried everything I could find on this forum. Does it work for anyone at all or is this "Connect automatically only for printing" feature only work on a mac?

Having same problem here on 1 of 3 laptops and cannot figure it out.   Two laptops do the auto-connect setup and operation just fine.  One is XP; one is Vista/64bit.  Third laptop (mine of course) also running Vista/64bit will not complete the setup for auto-connect.  It just  runs forever looking for printer driver.  I know driver is there and have even reloaded.   As long as I manually connect, prints fine.  I just woudl really like not to have to manually connect on this machine!

After many attempts, I've been able to resolve the issue and my pc finally completed the auto-print setup.  First, I left Shareport installed but not connected to printer.  I then totally removed the printer from my laptop.  Once the printer was gone, I then ran Shareport.  It recognized the printer (wirelessly) as usual.  Once it attached to the printer (wirelessly), I was going to add the printer (via the network printer option).  Once Shareport connected to the printer, my laptop added the printer.  Ran the auto-connect setup step and it found the driver this time.  Weird bit working great.  Good luck all!
