Hello guys, I've been having this problem for over 5 months now, I have a Dlink DIR-815 and I'm with Cogeco. I called a technician over hoping he would fix this but he said it's not their router and they can't do anything about it, long story short, he told me that the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz bands keep alternating meaning that once one of them works the other one doesn't, if the 2.4 goes down the 5 goes up, and he said that's not supposed to happen, can someone please tell me about any possible solutions? This problem is causing me to get inconsistent internet speeds and very high ping (ms). Please help!

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
- What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
- Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
- What region are you located?
- Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
- Has a Factory Reset been performed?
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
- What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
- Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
- For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
- What wireless modes are you using?
- 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
- What wireless devices do you have connected?
- Any cordless house phones?
- Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?
- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
- Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
-
I'll give you a picture of my settings and you can tell me what to change, I'm not that experienced, but how can I post pictures on here? I've tried several times but it won't post
-
You can post your pictures at places like photobucket or imageshack and then copy and paste the IMG url address from one of those sites here in the forum and the picture will display.
-
I thought there was a way to insert pictures on here :P but anyways here you go http://s817.photobucket.com/user/ameermw3/media/Untitled1_zps1e2bb35b.png.html?filters[user]=137981434&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0

Are most of your devices support N mode?
What current version of Firmware is loaded on this 815?
What regions are you located?
Do you have 5Ghz supporting devices?
-
I don't really know if I have 5Ghz supporting devices, I live in windsor, ON, Canada, I'm not sure if they use n mode, not really familiar with all this stuff sorry, and firmware version is 2.0, hope you can help!
-
Btw I tried single mode N on 2.4Ghz and found that it was the best so far on channel 11 with 20/40
-
You need to comfirm w the mfrs of each devices to see what tjey supprt in regards to 5Ghz support. Not all devices support 5ghz. Refer to support sites and specs and documentation.
Glad you got 2.4Ghz working better for you. Keep us posted.
-
yeah I tried mixed g and n and found that it was better than n, I could care less about 5ghz, all I want is a lag free internet, without ping (ms) issues, I found that I'm still having the same problem, all I really want is a strong 2.4ghz
-
yeah it's inconsistant, n is not bad, but still having ping issues
-
I'd appreciate any type of help, I just need to get rid of the damn 8000 ping spikes
-
Ok, lets do this,
Go here:
http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-815 (http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-815)
Select the drop down menu and select Rev B.
Download the zip file to your desktop. Unpack the .zip file to a folder where you see the .bin file.
Use IE or FF and do a factory reset under Tools/System with 1 WIRED LAN PC. Let the router come to ready. Log back into the routers web page using the 1 WIRED LAN PC and go to Tools/Firmware. Select the browse button and navigate to where you unpacked the .bin file. Select the .bin file listed in the folder. Select OK proceed to send the FW file. Let the router process the FW update. After it comes back to ready, do one more factory reset under Tools/System again. Let the router come to ready. You can either use the setup wizard to set it up again or manually go in and set it up. I prefer to use the wizard and complete that process. Then go in manually and set up the router.
Turn off the 5Ghz radio if your not using it. On 2.4Ghz, Set Mixed G and N modes, Give a new SSID name, Autoscan to Manual 1, 6 or 11. Auto 20/40Mhz and If your devices can support this, use WPA2/AES only, if some don't support AES only, then set Mixed TPIK and AES.
Check to see if you have Short GI and HT 20/40 Co-existence under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. Try disabling them as a test for both.
-
Thanks man! My problem's solved!!! I'll hit you up if I encounter any problems in the future, much thanks!
-
So upgrading FW solved it? Just wanna confirm with you. Glad its' working well. Enjoy.
-
It shortly solved it, but sad to say. It is back now, any further solutions?

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
-
I am extremely sorry for not answering this whole time, went through a whole process of changing the router then going back to this one, and getting the latest plan in my city, long story short, same problem, same thing, I would appreciate if you would continue helping me out to solve this.
Modem: Arris TM822
Down speed: 80-120 Mb
Up speed: 10 Mb
speed I'm getting is around 30 Mb, but I wish it was stable, it is constantly fluctuating and I cannot do anything, playing a game, my normal ping is around 89 Mb, I am now spiking up to 5k
And the worst thing is.. my router keeps randomly "resetting" help would be appreciated asap

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
-
I only have one router running which is the DIR-815, what do you mean by other routers?
-
Use InSSIDer to find out if you have neighboring WiFi routers that can cause interferences. How many?
-
I am sorry but I have no clue how to use it, but here's a picture of what I got

You do have some WiFi congestion there, many neighbors around you on 2.4Ghz.
Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
Any chance you can test 5Ghz radio? Do you have any 5Ghz supporting devices?
-
Idk if I can test the 5GHz band, do you need any devices that support it to use test it? If so then no I can't, I don't have any devices that support it. That's why I currently have it turned off from the router settings
-
You may need to get into some 5Ghz support on those devices that can be converted over. PCs, Laptops and devices that have wired LAN ports can be upgraded to use 5Ghz by installing a 5Ghz bridge and connecting the devices to the bridge via LAN able as a suggestion.
DAP-1525, 1533 and DIR-868L and 865L can be used as 5Ghz bridges.
Also, - Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Might help make the WiFi broadcast foot print smaller and less susceptible to other WiFi interferences.
-
I have no clue how to setup a 5ghz wireless bridge to be honest, is this really needed? I mean the problem is all with the 2.4ghz, and I can't take this for much longer! I'm getting speeds as low as 10 and 6, it is fluctuating a ton! I really need a solution for this
-
The problem is, is that you have some interferences on 2.4Ghz. I believe this is the source of the problems
You can try setting a manual channel of 8 on 2.4Ghz and see if this helps any...
If not, I would recommend switching to 5Ghz as there isn't anyone around you, at least on the InSSIDer results that you posted, using 5Ghz.
Also wireless speed testing on WiFi is not really recommended, wired is preferred, as wireless has too many variables that can cause inaccurate results...
-
I don't really want to use the 5Ghz band and would prefer the 2.4Ghz over it. So there's no way that this could be solved? Not even by getting a new router? Maybe an AC router?
-
Well thats the problem, your local areas seems to have some congestion of WiFi, especially on 2.4Ghz, getting to another router, AC even, may not resolve this. AC mode only works on 5Ghz, not 2.4Ghz. You'd still have to upgrade to 5Ghz on those devices to use AC mode.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.
-
I will give Teamviewer a shot, but will contacting my service provider about the 2.4ghz congestion do anything for me? maybe they could resolve the congestion issues?
-
No they can't do anything...you have other people around you with other WiFi routers that are competing for channels on 2.4Ghz. This is the reason we recommend switching to 5Ghz for those devices that you could convert over by using a 5Ghz bridge...
-
How can I use a 5Ghz bridge and where can I find one?
-
It would look something like this:
ISP modem>DIR-815 router> Wireless 5Ghz <DAP bridge<>Wired LAN connections to the back of the DAP
http://www.dlinkmea.com/site/index.php/site/productDetails/140 (http://www.dlinkmea.com/site/index.php/site/productDetails/140)
-
So I gave this some thought, and I can't really just buy a media bridge for a couple devices and leave the rest out, is there ANYTHING I can do?
-
I recommend getting the 5Ghz bridge and connecting as many devices to that.
For the 2.4Ghz frequency, try this:
- Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
