Title: Question about disc format

Hi, I have two drives in RAID 1. All my photos and videos are stored in the DNS-320, and I want to know if the RAID 1 is really secure (as far as I know the data are duplicate, so I am safe of disc failure).

I would like to know:

1.- If I remove one of the drives from my DNS-320 and put in an external box connected to my PC Win 7), can I see the contents of my drive ? (It is ext format, isn't it?)

2.- Can any one tell me about the robustness of RAID 1 in the D-link DNS-320 ? I mean, can I have any problem due to the hardware itself ? I mean, for example, any problem of data corruption (something that I assume will happen in both drives). I want to know if I can be confidence with the RAID 1 or when I will need an external backup, in such case, may be I will re-configure my system as RAID 0.

First, RAID 1 is just a way of protecting your data should a disk fail, there is NO WAY that it is a backup for your data!

That being said we have clients that have been using their DNS-320 to hold their company data for several years without problems - they do have a nightly backup but, so far, have not had to use it.

To be able to read a drive from the DNS-320 on a windows machine you need either an IFS (installable file system) that will read Ext3/4 running on the win machine or a program that can do the same.  If you value your data doing something like that is a last resort option because it only takes one wrong click for windows to trash your data.

The hardware is sound - just don't drop it a couple of metres and expect it to keep on working.  We have several DNS-323 and 320 NAS that are on 24/7/365 as have many of our clients and apart from the odd disk that has died (the RAID 1 rebuilt without problems in every case) we have seen no problems.

Remember that RAID 1 is NOT a backup and RAID 0 can cause you to loose all of your data should a disk fail.

No matter how you set up your DNS-320, if you value your data you need to back it up.
