I was using two DIR-655's in the past in this config:
cable modem -> DIR-655 #1 -> Dir-655 #2 (in switch only mode)
Basically had the main 655 handling all DNS, DHCP and gateway functions, the 655 upstairs only really used the switch and AP, all of the DHCP, DNS and other network stuff was disabled.
Replaced the main 655 with an 868 and am very happy with that. Thinking about doing the same for upstairs. Everyone says the 868 has better range than the 1525, so that is a concern. But when I had the 655 upstairs, even though nothing theoretically was routed and should have stayed on the switch, I had some weirdness that I attribute to it being a router (multicast issues with TiVo, etc.) So I thought that a 1525 would be the perfect answer, it gives me GB ports and an AP without all of the other stuff. The 868 is on sale at Frys this weekend, what are your thoughts on a second 868 vs. a 1525?

oh, and for the record, they are connected by a CAT 6 cable, I am not trying to link the two devices via wireless.

Go for it man...the 868 works great as an additional wired AP or wireless Bridge. I use mine as a bridge for my roommates Xbox downstairs. ;)

With the 655's I would have issues with the router function even though the clients were attached to the switch only (wan port was not used for uplink to the main router.
With the 868 is the switch functionality truly separate ?
The 1525 is half the price but will probably not have the same 5ghz coverage (half my clients are N so that won't matter.)
What I do know about the 1525 there is no router to get in the way.

Just helped setup my friends 2x 868Ls last night over the phone and teamviwer. Must say well worth it. He's completly happy now.
The 2nd 868 is in bridge mode so connecting anything to the lan ports isnt effected since the router side is completely disabled in the FW. Even in wired AP mode tge dhcp and other features would not effect connections if the were correctly disabled. Ive never had a problem running this mode.
