tried to block https://box.com / https://box.net, a filesharing site but if I use 'box ' or 'box.net' or 'box.com' as the filtering URL it gets thru. If I use https://www.box.com (or net) it's rejected on save as a illegal URL.

Does http://box.com or .net do same thing? With out the s.

I can't remember if I tried http.
I'm remotely managing the site and am longer local to try it.
I won't be back there until the end of the month.
Maybe someone else could try before then?

FYI, it's also good to have a remote access program like team viewer installed or turn on the routers remote access control. ;)

I am using remote access control. But know of no way to go out thru the remote router as an onsite user; possible?

Someone either will have to be there on a PC that it's installed on or have it running as a service on a PC that you have access too...

thanks but the primary purpose of this client's router is to run a video dvr and a juke box that goes out on the net to get songs. With the left over capacity customers can use the wifi while having a sandwhich, coffee etc. There is no dedicated PC on the system.;( except for me, over a hundred miles away).

You'll need to find a way to check this then. Maybe have someone there that can help you check it at the site.

FYI, I tested your sites out on my DIR-865L which I believe has similar base code and the filter is working. I can't access those sites after applying the Web Filter and configuring the Access Control rule.

what did yhou use for the filter?
I know I tried https://www.box.com and https://www.box.net and I got an error message when I tried to store them saying it was an invalid url
I tried box.net and box.com and it saved but did not block.

I did both and both methods worked. I'll try this on my 826L as it's more closer to the
636L 626L and see if I get the same messages. There could me an issue just with the 626L.
What FW version is currently loaded?

Did the router come with v1.03 or did you update FW?
What browser do you use to manage the router?

I did a f/w upgrade to 1.03 (it came with v1.00)and did a reset using the button on the bottom of the router and checked and updated any setting as necessary.
I was using firefox v25.0.1

OK. I'll check on this this evening and see what I find. Possible could be an issue with the FW. Can you check the setting with IE?
I was using a Mac last nite with the 865L and used Safari.

I'll be with the customer next weekend; and will try.
I don't see how it can be the browser but can try IE and chrome then.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection
I'll check my router after work. You might load FW code again using this process to be sure:

I would hate to think that all it takes to bypass website filtering was which browser you use or what setting you use in it. That would basicly would make website filtering useless.

That's not the case however we've seen that in recent browsers, they are adding in security add-ons that seem to effect how they can connect to the routers web page and interact with it. Even with IE versions, seen some odd behavior between them until the compatibility mode is triggered.
These are just some suggestions we've found as an alternate work around when using the various browsers. ::)

Ok, I just checked my 826L and input all 4 combinations of those web sites you listed into the Mac Filter options and did not get any error messages when selecting Save.
I presume this is either isolated to a browser configuration or interaction between the browser and router or possible issue with the FW.

I had no problem saving box.com or box.net. But I was not denied access to https://www.box.com or .net when they were in my list.
I couldn't save either https://www.box.com or https://www.box.net
have you tried going there with them on your list?

Ok, reproducible...And I think that http(s) may not be allowed....only http.
I get the same thing on my 865L as well..

my philosophy is: any website a router user can access is a website the router owner should be able to block; not a subset of websites.
at least it's only know to affect https. With a ssl certificate they can be tracked with (at least in countries that would do it) it probably deters most pirates from setting up a https for p2p file sharing network.
https://box.com appears to be commercial; but I'm sure some of their customers have employees that may try storing and swapping files there without their approval
I still consider it a flaw in the firmware.

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and inquired about this. This may not be a flaw in FW however more or less a networking standard that router Mfrs have to work with and thus may not be allowed to include this blocking of HTTPS in there routers. I would contact D-Link and see if they can provide you with information. Please ask them if the DIR series doesn't follow this "philosophy", ask them which model router they have that does. These are home routers and mainly designed around the home use model and not meant for a business class environment or business class needs. Maybe there is something they have that will satisfy our philosophical needs. Also inquired about D-Links DFL line of firewall products..this maybe what you need instead of a DIR series home line router. Ask for level 2 or higher support.
