I'm in the market for a new router and debating between the DGL-5500 and DIR-868L. I'm a gamer and need the speed, but having two Xbox One's I need a router that will support open NAT on both of them at the same time. It looks like the big differences is one has Stream Boost and the other has SmartBeam.

I'm really liking the DGL-5500. I have both my Xbox One's at the top of the priority and they have solid connections even while other network activity is going on. There are a few problems that I've had but it might be resolved now after I re-flashed the firmware and there's new firmware coming soon. Keep in mind that I had to put both my consoles in "Energy-Saving" mode to keep their NAT at OPEN. Other than that very solid on both wired and wireless 5ghz. I haven't used the 2.4ghz wireless much only on my phone.

I set up my friends game consoles on 2 DIR-868Ls, one running main host router and the other in bridge mode that the consoles are connected too. Enjoying the AC connection for gaming.

And both X1 get open NAT on "Instant On"? It seems like the 868 is a better overall router. I've used Linksys version of Streamboost and it had a minimal effect other then cutting the bandwidth to other devices even when the priority devices were off. SmartBeam might be more beneficial.

We had to disable Instant On to get OPEN NAT.

Have you run speed tests on other non priority machines with priority devices on and off? As I mentioned in my other reply Linksys version of Streamboost wasn't good at giving full bandwidth back to other machines when the priority devices were offline.

I honestly don't think any router can do multiple Xbox One's with Instant-On. Seems like a deisgn flaw on Microsoft's part and needs a system update. I haven't seen a situation where my non priority devices on the DGL-5500 didn't get bandwidth when other devices were offline. My PC is 3rd on priority after the xbox's and it gets pretty much full bandwidth on speedtests.

I am running 2 xbones with instant on and open NAT.

I am running a Xbox One - Day One Edition with 'INSTANT ON' and get OPEN NAT. Once Santa arrives, I will have a second Xbox One - Day One Edition. I'm confident the second Xbox One - Day One Edition will have OPEN NAT with 'INSTANT ON'.

Thanks for sharing BS, I'm wondering if this also could be an isolated issue as well. Keep us posted on 2nd XB1 install.

I had tested the Linksys EA6500 which has a similar priority function, this was my rough testing speeds in various situations;
Ping Network Traffic Internet Speed Test
Priority Off 19-25ms Low 101/34mbs
Priority Off 100-158ms High 101/34mbs
Priority On 19-28ms Low 38/8mbs
Priority On 30-50ms High 38/8mbs
So as you can see it helps keep low ping rates in games but the bandwidth of other computers is always cut low.

Wow, sure cuts the ISP speed down on the DL. :o
I'm not seeing that on the 5500, however there is some fudge factor when using SB. I'm getting correct ISP test results on the 5500 when SB reports the speeds, however I see a minor dip in speed when I do a speed test with my ISP or SPN. Been told this is normal and does not impact router and data performances. Nothing like your seeing with this Linksys though. ::)

Yeah I wasn't very happy about that. The difference in ping was minimal in my book and not worth the hit in bandwidth on non priority devices.

So what are you doing to get? 5500 or 868L? ???

I'm leaning towards the 5500. Not in a major rush.

Kewl, keep us posted. New FW is coming soon and change is in the wind I believe.
