Title: PS Vita connecting to PS4 Remote Play causes router to drop packets on WAN.
Post by: ualdayan on December 17, 2013, 09:45:21 AM
If I connect my PSVita to the DGL-5500 using WPA or WPA2, with AES encryption the Vita will try to connect to the PS4, then say the connection has dropped immediately after connecting.  (Meanwhile, all traffic on the WAN side gets dropped for a few seconds, this can be confirmed with ping -t www.google.com, then the traffic comes back with 1,000-3,000ms ping times for a few more seconds before it goes back down to 15-20ms.)

If I connect my PSVita to the DGL-5500 using TKIP encryption the Vita will successfully connect to the PS4.  Every 4-5 minutes though the router will spike to 1,000-3,000ms ping times and the Vita will glitch out as if it's lost connectivity.

If I hook up another WiFi AP, and connect the Vita to that one everything goes fine, no ping spikes or WAN packet losses.  I'd prefer to not have to keep another (older) device hooked up solely for WiFi.

The same exact behavior happens with my Google Chromecast - another commonality between the Vita and the Chromecast is Streamboost interprets both as 'FreeBSD' on the list of devices page.

This is using v1.11B03 firmware.

I am in the US.

Yes, I have actually had the problem with the Chromecast since the initial firmware, and before I narrowed it down I tried all manner of settings after factory resets.  I never found the solution back then other than not using the Chromecast anymore because I never thought to try TKIP encryption (which was easy because not that many apps on my phone supported it anyway). Who would have thought wireless encryption type could cause WAN packet drops for wired clients. Since then I bought a PS4 and that's when I found the PSVita/PS4 problem which is something I intended to use quite a bit more.  That renewed my interest in getting it to work which is how I eventually found that TKIP at least allowed the Vita to connect to the PS4.

Before finding the link to AES/TKIP I tried resetting and turning Streamboost off from the start of setup, using/not using ABE, even tried turning off things like UPNP, DHCP, etc, so the device has gone through many factory resets.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable, Comcast
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Arris CM820
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 50Mbps down, 10Mbps up

I have tried various channels, and also have tried HT20/40 Co-existance off and on.  Unfortunately neither the Vita nor the Chromecast support 5Ghz so I can't see if 5Ghz has the same problem as 2.4Ghz.[/list]

For 2.4Ghz, try WPA2/AES only with HT20/40Mhz disabled as a test...

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

I recommend checking with the MFr of each device to see what encryption type is natively supported.

Please let us know about some of the questions presented. The more we know the better we can help you with suggestions and feedback.

For 2.4Ghz, WPA2/AES with HT20/40 disabled the Vita immediately says it has lost connection with the PS4 and the router drops WAN packets of my wired desktop computer for a few seconds.

Yes, there are other routers in the area.  The DGL-5500 is on channel 11, and there are other routers on channel 1 (mine), and channel 6 (neighbors, who leave theirs on default - although it's a very weak signal by the time it reaches me).

I do have cordless phones, Uniden DECT 6.0 phones. (1920Mhz)

So testing with WPA and WPA2 and TPIK only helps the VITA maintain?

I recommend checking with the MFr of each device to see what encryption type is natively supported.

If I change the type to WPA, AES, the Vita can't connect to the PS4 and even trying causes the WAN packets to be dropped from all wired clients.  If I try it with WPA2, AES, the same thing happens.  If I try it with WPA or WPA2, TKIP, it connects, but every few minutes ping times for wired clients spikes to 1-3 second pings.

The Vita and the Chromecast both seem to support AES, because if I hook up another WiFi AP and connect them to that AP instead (using WPA2/AES) they work, and the DGL-5500 doesn't drop WAN packets for wired devices at all under that scenario.  I'd just prefer to not have to keep another AP hooked up solely for wireless.

What is the Mfr of this other AP?

I recommend installing that other AP as are 2ndary AP, They can run on the same mode, SSID and PW however just make sure that the AP is manually set for a farthest channel away from what the 5500 is using.

I'll forward this onto D-Link for review...If your needing more help and information, I recommend contacting D-Link on the phone for immediate help as this seems to be beyond forum help at this time.

Ok, thank you for this information. I've passed this along to D-Link. Please be patient while they review it. I'll post back if I get some info. Again, if you needing more help beyond this, please phone this in and talk to someone at D-Link. Might ask for level 2 or higher support. If you get a case #, please PM me the #.

Thank you.

Can you test the Vita and PS with WiFi security disabled temporarily as a test to see if it stabilizes the connection?

Turn it back on when you done testing...I presume there could be an encryption incompatibility issue here...

I presume the Vita has the most up to date OS? I know the PS4 is new and should already be up to date and have the latest WiFi standards...

To to clarify, the drop packets on the WAN are you reffering to the Wireless LAN (WLAN) side or actual wired WAN (Internet) side? There are differences here.

Going to try that now (no encryption at all).  The WAN (Internet) side.  Eg, when the Vita or the Google Chromecast is using WiFi set to AES encryption my desktop computer (wired, not wireless) and other wired devices start having dropped packets going out and coming in from the internet.

Ok, just wanted to confirm that. Keep us posted...

Also check with Sony to make sure the PS and Vita is up to date on there SW.

Ok, I played for about 8-9 minutes, and it didn't glitch even once with encryption all the way off.  So, off = no problems at all, TKIP = glitching every few minutes and causing high pings, AES = Vita instantaneously losing connection to the PS4 while causing packet loss and high pings.

Ok, what we suspected. I presume the PS4 checks for updates. How about the Vita?

Yes, both have to be updated in order to connect to PSN.  Also, don't forget my Google Chromecast does the same thing as the Vita.

Ok...One more test...What happens if you set single mode G, WPA2/TPIK only and co-existence ON?

Seems to work on G only mode, even AES worked without causing WAN packet loss.

Ok so seems the N mode and WPA2/AES seems to be an issue here between the Vita and 5500. I've forwarded this on to D-Link for review. I don't know what, if,  or when anything will come about. If it does or if I get any info I'll post back. I recommend keeping the Linksys e4200 and set it up as a wired AP to use in conjunction with the 5500 for a work around solution for now.

I got an nVidia Shield over Christmas, and it doesn't play nice with the DGL-5500 either.  Luckily when the DGL-5500 is connected to the 5Ghz it doesn't cause packet loss for wired clients like the Vita/Chromecast, but it seems to get disconnected every 3-4 minutes and then you have to go into WiFi on the Shield and turn it off and back on before it regains connectivity.

Try using Single mode N on 5Ghz WPA2/AES only?

Try disabling DNS Relay and manually input DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual
