Title: using dir826 router with a netgear cable modem
Post by: pendodave on January 14, 2014, 08:43:36 AM
Hi, I am based in the UK and have a virgin media cable connection to the internet via a netgear vmdg280 cable modem.

For years I've used an old linksys wireless router with my vmdg280 cable modem. It all worked fine straight out of the box.

Now the linksys is so old it needs to be configured with IE 6 (honest) so decided to replace it with an dlink dir-826L router.

The trouble is, it absolutely doesn't work straight from the box. It shows a green light indicating internet connectivity, and the network manager in windows says that it can see some internet connectivity, but there is no access to the internet and no obvious solution.

I have powered off both the router and cable modem for 15 minutes and turned them on in the appropriate order.

Bizarrely, If I connect the linksys into the cable modem and then plug the dlink into the linksys, it works just fine. Not much of a solution though...

Does anyone have any useful insight into what I might do to make this work properly ?

Thanks,

David.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

thanks for the suggestions.

I think that the nub of the issue is that the cable modem is also a router and that (as far as I know) it cannot be bridged.

That being the case, I either need to get my cable provider to send me a better modem or use the dlink in a different way (as a wireless access point). I will fiddle around with this and may start another thread if I have a problem.

Does seem a bit rum that a dodgy old liksys works perfectly and a brand new dlink doesn't....

Try putting the 826L into the DMZ if the ISP modem has this feature. Disable any firewalls and WiFi if the ISP modem has this.

If any of the suggestions fail, try this:
