Title: Slow Wireless DIR655 Novice Low Power User

Low power user here.  Just upgraded from DSL to Comcast cable a few months ago.  Turned in the Comcast gateway a week ago in favor of a Motorola SB6141 modem, and of course my trusty Dir-655 (Hardware A4, Firmware 1.31 NA).  The default settings haven't been touched.

I have pretty basic internet service...."as high as 25 mbps."  Hard wired directly to the modem, I am getting around 29mbps; hard wired to the router, 25 mbps.  Immediately testing wireless 6 inches from the router, speed is 4.5 mbps.  (speedtest.net)  That's consistent with both laptops and one tablet in the house, regardless of location.  Two Windows 8 and one Windows 7.  We have a couple of DVRs wirelessly connected, though it's pretty rare that we stream programming in.  We are in a single family house, but see eight networks nearby, two with two bars, and the rest with one; our immediate neighbor is a heavy gamer.  It is rare that more than two wireless devices are in use in our house.  We would enjoy streaming Youtube and occasional movie with out interruption.  Sounds like the DIR-655 should be able to do it. 

I have read lots of earlier discussions on this board, but they are a little above my head.  I know how to access the router on line, but that's about it.  Anyone have the patience to help me out?  Thanks!

• Has a Factory Reset been performed? You might want to do this to clear out any previous ISP modem information.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

• Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service).
• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0) and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• If IPv6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6) is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
• Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPI) to test.
• Enable uPnP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upnp) and Multi-cast Streaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast) under Advanced/Networking.
• Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. Tools/Time.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)

It's always best to speed test via wired connections. Testing wireless has too many variables that can lead to inaccurate results.

Wireless Configurations

• Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
• What wireless modes are you using?
• 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
• Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
• Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones?

Hi!

Factory reset performed at initial connection to comcast, before speed tests.  Regarding your recommendations.  Though wired speeds are great, followed most recommendations:

Turned QoS off.
Advance DNS off.   Couldn't find parental controls.
Unicasting enabled.
The one thing I didn't do was change dns addresses using Name bench.  
Set up reserved IP addresses.
Devices are all connecting fine.  
IPv6 not present on this version of firmware (tho Comcast recommending updating firmware for upcoming change.)
Changed firewall settings to endpoint independent for both. Had been port and address for tcp, and address for udp
upnp and multicast enabled
wish and wps turned off
wan port on auto.  I don't believe motorola sb6141 supports gb speed
Date set.
Brand new cable....and delivered 29mbps just fine (exceeding max speed in plan from comcast)

Default SSID had already been changed.  
wireless modes were n, b and g.  changed to n and g only.
width was set for 20; changed to 20/40
Channel switched from auto to 11, then 6, now1.  (after speed tests)  Was on auto b4.  
security mode as recommended.  
Panasonic Dect 6 phone at 1.9 GHz--shouldn't interfere from what they say.

That doesn't seem to have helped the wireless speed.  The dish hopper dvrs shouldn't be doing anything....we are not using on demand; otherwise, I do not think they use the internet for much other than middle of the night updates.  Speed test download speed from ookla is 5mbps or less.  

Other ideas?  could it be old firmware....Thanks FurryNutz!  (Love the screen name, by the way!)

Just the ookla test--speedtest.net  Just got .74download speed and .67upload a couple of minutes ago.  Can't run any video without endless buffers--even taking time to load photos and websites.  Both laptops the same.  Cleared the cache and all that.

Speed always at least in the teens with the comcast gateway.  Since speed is great directly from the modem, and very good wired to the router, and awful wireless a foot away from the router, do you think it is just shot?  It is about 4 years old, but always in cool environment, and had only one laptop wireless.  With ATT DSL then, so we didn't break it with blazing speeds!

Try setting G mode with out any security as a temporary test..

You need to be 3-6 feet away from the router and test..

• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

What devices are you using to test the wireless speed out?

Speedtest.net. Other than that, just observing SLOW response to everything.

To Clarify, I should put router in G mode without security and perform speed test using speedtest.net?

or, am I doing it to use InSSider.

FYI, without InSSider, I see 12 wireless networks, 4 or 5 with low power, the rest with poor.  What else am I looking for when I do it with InSSider?

My laptop seems to be the most sensative.....only 4 wireless networks showing on other laptop.

Sorry to be a little slow on this stuff.

Yes set G mode with out any security temporarily as a test...

If you have other wifi networks around, you need to find a open clear channel thats not being used hopefully, 1 6 or 11 is preferred.

Laptop.

In g mode with no security 3 feet from router, download, 1.56, upload, 1.42.

With inSSIDer, even more networks showed up....got up to 13.  Some with last names of people three houses away!?

I had the channel set to 1 when I did the test, which was one of the least used.

Any hope?

Possible that your seeing some interferences.

I'd try to find a open and clear channel to use...

I'd try a factory reset and set up from scratch and find a clear open channel, Try mixed G and N or Single mode N, WPA2 and Auto TPIK/AES as a test...

Last option would be to update FW...
