Title: DIR 655 and W8.1 compatiblity
Post by: LuisAlberto on February 09, 2014, 06:54:06 PM
Hello,
I was advised to post this question in this forum. This is the typical configuration I have:
Cable>>Modem>>DIR-655>>Wired to PC >>wireless to other laptop.
Same configuration for many years, excellent performace with XP Pro in all PCs. I never had any problem.
Updated both computers to W8 first and to W8.1 later both PCs (in December 2013). Internet keeps dropping and is unstable (for the wired and wireless PCs). Sometimes there is internet connection but not able to get to any www site. Bypassed DIR-655 by wiring Modem to PCs and everything works well.
The problem is the DIR-655 (I think). Read in some D-Link forum that this router is not compatible with W8. Is this true?
Additionally I read in this forum about the Silux Virtual Link for Windows which I downloaded. I installed it on both PCs but it did not helped. (besides the fact that this application is asking to connect the router to the internet while it is already connected).
I am looking for suggestions on how to solve this issue; Do I need any new driver for W8.1 or should I purchase a new wireless router compatible with W8.1. I am a newby in this world of routers and modem and will appreciate your input.
Thank you.
Luis.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

I just loaded W8.1 x64 yesterday on my PC at home for the first time so I'll have to get some play time in to see what I see with it and i'll try and put my 655 back online and test. Not liking 8.1 so far.  :P

Thank you again for your help.
I can answer the first three questions now. I will work on the rest.
Hardware version is A4. Firmware is 1.21 (2008/10/09) and I am located in Minnesota USA.
I will keep working on the rest.
Best regards
Luis.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

Thanks again. I have FF 27 which I think is the last version. Done all you requested. It is now working but cannot tell you what of all I did made it work. I will monitor the situation and report back shortly.
Appreciate your input.....ah I also change the cable between Modem and Router...Just in case :-)
Thanks.
Luis.

Hello again,
I did all I was suggested and tried other things as well, but the same problem with the network dropping.
I found somewhere on the net the following solution to a similar problem that I have, but this solution, if it works, would imply that the problem is not the DIR-655 but something else....is this correct?

I have not tried it yet but all this data should be entered in the properties window of network I am having problem with.
"Use the following DNS server address"
"enter 208.67.222.222 Preferred"
"208.67.220.220 alternate"

Any idea? Thanks.
Thanks.

Possible...

Did you disable DNS relay on the router and input these custom DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual and test?
