Title: Hotspot Configuration
Post by: dyprivatei on February 12, 2014, 11:37:56 AM
Hi,
I'm trying to configure my new DIR-505 as a Wifi hotspot so I can run a private network and connect to my landlord's wifi upstairs.
I have set it up using the wizard and it looks to be connecting to the router, but when I connect my laptop to the newly created network (on the DIR-505), the connection is "limited".  So when I try to open a website, it automatically sends me to the DIR-505 configuration page.
Any idea why it would send me there automatically?

Thanks!

Wireless Configurations

At work right now, but I'll check again when I get home:

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router. I'll have to double check this
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status. 1.1
What region are you located? Canada

Wireless Configurations
What wireless modes is the main host router using? Not sure, but I know it has Access Point Isolation. I don't have access to my landlord's router.

Possible this isolation could be a cause.

You could try to update FW and see, if you do, please use the following to perform the update:

Ok, I'll try updating the FW then.
The reason I bought this router was to bypass the isolation of my devices.  I thought that was one of the main selling features of the product?
That you can connect to a wireless network and create a sub-network where your various devices can interact with each other.

Ya that should work however I presume isolation might depend on settings and environment or it might be interfere.

Ok, just checked and the hardware version is A1, firmware version is 1.01
Also, I get the following on the config page => Status => WiFi Hotspot
Connection : DHCP
IP Address :0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask :0.0.0.0
Default Gateway :0.0.0.0
Primary DNS Server :0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS Server :0.0.0.0

Updated to FW 1.07.
Now it doesn't redirect me to the config page, but still doesn't work.

I presume there is a configuration problem between the 505 and this host WiFi router. With out more access to the landlords WiFi to check configurations, kind of hard to tell if it's a problem with the 505 or the landlords WiFi router.

Any chance you have friend or family member that you can take the 505 too and do some testing and configuration to see if you can get it working there that you can have access to the main host router if needed? Need to see if you can test with a main host router with security disabled, then test with WPA/TPIK then WPA2/AES enabled. Once you get it going there, then you might have a better idea of what is going on with the landlords router. Again, that wireless isolation could be interfering.

I've asked my landlord for access to the main router, so hopefully he grants it to me.  I wish I had thought about bringing the 505 into work to test it here... good idea.  I'll bring it in tomorrow if I can't figure out the issue tomorrow.
thanks a bunch for your help  :)

Are you using this as the main AP or is there a primary host router or AP as well?

Some Client side HW may not support WPA2 and AES protocols.

What devices are you trying to connect?

I have a similar issue and started a thread of my own. Did you find a solution? It is amazing that the D-link Hotspot Wi-Fi does not work out of the box.
