Title: Hidden settings?
Post by: EddieZ on June 02, 2009, 02:26:51 PM
Anyone know why these settings are hidden (see attached image)?

Or are they visible only with pure N only connections (which I don't have  :( )? Seems some have something to do with the TCP retransmission timer.

Where on earth did you see that??!!?

Advanced Wireless page. My webbrowser pages seem to refresh a bit slow when logged into the router. With some good timing, the print screen buttton makes it more visible  ;D

I'm running N only on one of my Dir-655's and I also only see those options for a split second before they disappear.

I would be interested as to the finetuning options these hidden items give us.

try turning off the web browsers formatting.

You can access not really "hidden" settings with the older firmware, but hidden pages the reveal some interesting things, not sure what they do though.

wlan_stats_get.cgi
regdump.cgi
chklst.txt

service control:

http://192.168.0.1/root.sxml
http://192.168.0.1/WANCommonIFC1.xml

I think there were more but that's all I got sifting through the code. :P

If you look through the actual web code, and the js files, you'll see alot of things commented out as per h/w check.

Example with no formatting enabled. Hint: This is probably what some users did and realised their WDS didn't work, so they came to dlink saying they get a WDS error... of course hiding the fact this is what they did to apply settings.

I was going to copy & paste my config. screens in hopes of maybe someone might see a issue with my setup but decided not to as to much info.
However if you go into the advanced setup of the router and drag your mouse across the screen highlighting it and then paste it as if you were going to post on the message board you will see different categories that is pasted then what was on the sceen.

Not really of any importance, just kinda interesting options. I guess to many options is to much and the engineers are saving us for ourselves

I hope Lycan will as inquisitive as we are  ;D It seems there a lot more options to be configured, such as RIP enabling.

In my browser (safari) if I disable javascript it shows all the other options in the normal menu style.

*HOWEVER* I suspect doing so just gives me arbitrary values in the places, since they certianly don't match what the normal menus are set to.

If I disable styles (equivalent to your formatting?) then it shows the unformatted list with all menus shown with the right values.

I noticed a Bridge mode, that was disabled in one of the early firmwares correct?  I wonder if it still works.

Yes, Just about every menu has a hidden option. You can select these options and it should save the changes, since leaving the current menu prompts the configuration changed dialogue box. I never did actually try saving any values, since I have no need for them and no way to test them out.

I've been trying some, but i'm yet unable to check if something really changes. The router is still working though  ;D

Could it be that you just found the way to resurrect static-routing on a dir655 ? ???

No, even in this view you can select WAN only.

Will try the bridge later.

Ok, let us all know, keep up the good work.

By the way: I like the way you move ...  ( from one forum to another, of course )  ;D

This got interesting.. I was so fed up that other people on my LAN could disable the connection via UPNP that I turned it off. Now (in Opera) on the page "Advanced Network", I chose another style and suddenly two new options came up..

UPnP
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) supports peer-to-peer Plug and Play functionality for network devices.

Enable UPnP :
Allow Users to disable Internet Access :  <- this
Allow Users to modify Virtual Server Mappings :  <- this

Now I can use UPNP again.. why in the world was these options "hidden" in the first place?

Lycan:  "I'm going to need you to look in this flashy thing for a second."
D-Link Customer:  "Wait a min!!  What are these new settings and I'm pissed off that this damn thing... "

<FLASH>

Lycan:  "Ok sir, you just bought a D-Link router and can't wait to set it up.  You will reflash the router just to ensure you have the latest and greatest firmware D-Link can provide.  You love the way the router stays warm, the ability to disable DNS Relay whenever you want, and the spontaneous slowdown and reboot feature we have added to ensure any memory leaks are wiped periodically."

@anonposter: Are you makin an attempt to be funny or you just taking a piss with the board mod? The attempt fails miserably and it makes absolutely no sense to riducule someone who takes the users' best interest at heart.

Its ok EddieZ, not only is Lycan a big boy, he would probably do that if he could.

I know I wouldn't mind one of those MIB wands, if only they worked through the phone and over teh interwebs.

P.S. I am only here cause a post was reported, I have learned my lesson and am not here for general discussion this time.  I have better things to do with my time, like put hot wax on my eyeballs.

Yup, this is very important. Now i see why we have to wait some fixes/new firmware so long time.  ;D

You should be glad they don't let me at the firmware, I have no problem making decisions that I tell you are right.  If you think 1.30 was fun just wait till you see what I would do to the feature set, I have not been bashful about my opinion on various features in the past.

There are several issues with the current routers.  Now 40+ hidden settings were identified and I'm sure he wishes he can make folks forget about those so he can focus on the ones Dlink has specifically given users access to modify.  It was meant as a joke and nothing more.  These boards can get heated at times.

With that said, keep up the good work.  I'm sure he appreciates his level 9 knight in shining armor come to save him from the evil poster.

Sarcasm will get you everywhere.
YES, there are hidden pages. No, I won't tell you how to use them. End of story.

The Ubicom platform comes with features we don't offer in the unit so we disable the feature and hide the page.

And with that I'm going to lock this thread before Anon can come up with another one of his witty retorts.

-Lycan.

As always, if you have something useful to add PM me and I'll unlock the thread.
