Title: Making USB printer shared via DIR-505
Post by: Dumbelo on February 24, 2014, 02:39:16 AM

Hello!

Seller sold me this device to this purpose...

But I am not sure if this device is ok for this purpose or I am not able to configure DIR-505 and my windows 7 laptop right (I use it in WIFI).

I got DSL line, shared by router to WIFI. I setup the DIR-505 in router mode, put my canon printer (non wifi printer) via USB line to DIR-505. I used router mode, I can access to internet via DIR-505 Wifi network, but my printer is like a dead fish. Not working at all.

What port configurations I have to make to my printer drivers? Or to DIR-505 setup? My printer is Canon MF8000cn.

Thank you for help!

You can try to see if the Shareport SW will help this:

I presume that when the 505 is in router mode that your PC is also connected to the 505 and not the other router?

Hello!

Harware version for DIR-505 is A2 and firmware 1.06.

I do not use in router mode. I use it in repeater. I am actually living in Finland.

My laptop is not in wired connection to main router. My main router is Bewan Ibox, which makes my WIFI network.

So I have made this DIR-505 work in repeater mode ( using this Bewan's WIFI ). My canon printer is connected to DIR-505. My laptop is now connected to DIR-505 via WIFI => access to internet is working fine.

I tried to use Shaport Plus, but it is not finding any routers in any mode.

These are my settings.

IN EXTENDED WIFI_NETWORK (DIR-515)
Extended Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) : dlink
Connection : DHCP
IP Address : 192.168.100.30
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway Address : 192.168.100.1
Primary DNS Server : 192.168.100.1
Secondary DNS Server : 0.0.0.0

It may be that in repeater mode, it's not supported, You may need to connect the printer to the main host router there or as a alternative suggestion, connect a DPR print server to the system and connect the printer to the print server.

You might phone contact your regional D-Link support office and inquire about the 505 and ask about the DPR print server unit.

Just adding information:

I got confirmation from D-link: You can not use DIR-505 for sharing printer in WIFi. Atleast
not USB.

So I take This back to shop....

Thank you for sharing. Good luck. I would recommend getting into a USB to LAN conversion so that you don't need to connect the USB printer to any router or AP. Would simplify the connection and help anyone on your LAN network to connect to it and print to it with out having to configure any routers or APs or any SW. Just drivers installed for the printer and point it to the IP address of the print server.
