Title: Problem With New D-Link DIR-826L - Can't send emails or connect to DAP1320
Post by: RPMCGB on March 01, 2014, 01:29:45 PM
Ok here goes.  I'll try to be as precise and fact based as possible here and keep it in point form so your not reading a one paragraph "story".

Had DIR-645 - worked perfectly
Added DAP-1320 to it - worked perfectly
Wanted to upgrade to dual channel 300mbps

FIRST went out and bought ASUS rtn66u - problems - NOT sending emails and wouldn't connect to DAP-1320

Tried their tech support - IT WAS PATHETIC, especially considering the unit was $150!

Returned the ASUS and (having great luck with D-Link in the past) bought the DIR-826L

Set-up DIR-826L product no problems connecting to internet - but same problems in other areas - can't send emails and wouldn't connect to DAP-1320

Used D-Links Tech Support - very efficient people but could not solve problems after 2 hours so they escalated it to higher level... won't hear back from them until next week.

Plugged DIR-645 back in - No problems in ANY area.

Any input is appreciated.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Went through all this info and the entire configuration with the tech support and he found no problems.  In fact, we even reset the unit and went through it all one more time.

I am wireless with Silo in southern Ontario, Canada

But again, keeping everything in perspective, when I plug in the DIR-645 again it all works fine.

So even though you went thru this with TS, we have no idea what your system is or how everything is configured.

If you can help us here by answering some of the questions presented, it would give us a better idea of what you have and help us give you better feedback and suggestions.

I personally have this router and have had no issues with it...However I'm on cable with a stand alone ISP modem. Helps to have more details here so we can better help you.

The reply was posted quick and seemed like a blanket response and I guess I had hoped to avoid doing the same thing over again, thinking that others have had similar issues and found a common fix.  I see in many places some have (had the same issue) but none that I found published online have been brought to a conclusion that says, either "A" or "B" or "A,B,C" was the problem.  Most that I found ended without a solution.

Many people have this router with no issues, given that we're thinking it might be an ISP problem but have not heard back from them as yet.  It is odd that the 645 plug and plays no problems though.

I am NOT an IT person so here goes:

What Hardware version is your router? A1
What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.02 (I was in the 826 set-up earlier when it was plugged in and thought it was 1.04 but the back of the router says 1.02)
What region are you located? Southern Ontario canada
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?  Wireless

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  SILO Wireless (rural)
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Power D Sine 3001
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?  1.5 mbps down,  500 kbps up

Also I am PC based on Outlook Express & Internet Explorer

Under Router & Wired Config and Wireles config - The tech and I went through every top menu and side sub menu, by process of elimination we changed several things (including many items you noted), tried the email, then went back.  Finally we reset to factory settings, and started looking in other areas.

Like I said, Web works great, incoming email works great, can't send email and can't connect to DAP-1320.

I have see it where some MTU values can impact operation with web sites and emails. Not on this particular model however if emails is the only thing effected I presume that there is a problem between the router, PC and ISP modem.

Does this happen if the PC is directly wired to the 826L?

This is the first time we've seen this issue specifically with this router so you maybe the first one to experience it. This is a configuration issue I presume at this time...

We checked the MTU setting but I did not ask that question of the ISP, which I will when they get back to us.

I am going to try to access the settings on my 645... problem is it's at least 2 years old and my wife set it up, so we have to get back into the set-up on it.

This system is wireless.  I can wire a laptop directly to it but it runs on Win 7 & Live Mail.  Our third system is also on Windows 7 & Live Mail and it wont send either using the 826L.  I will hook the 826L back up and try the laptop hard-wired to see what happens.

Thanks!

The more I investigate, the more I'm leaning towards this being an ISP or mail setting problem/glitch.  If it is, I will be sure to post results as everywhere else I looked, (ie: installed new router and can't send emails), posts were left open with no conclusion.

Keep us posted, maybe someone from here can review your router settings with you remotely...

Problem with DIR-826L solved.

Got a call late in the AM today from the D-Link tech that the problem was escalated to... this fellow knew his stuff.

Yesterday I did some digging between the two set-ups (my existing 645 and the new 826) and found a few differences, mostly that the new unit was set to Dynamic IP instead of static etc. Note that when I asked the initial tech which setting it needed to be in the new 826L (before I checked the 645 set-up) he said Dynamic, and that that was not the problem as I could view the web, receive emails and just not send (or hook up to my 1320).

A call from our ISP this morning confirmed that we are static IP as well, so just as I was about to go in change it all myself the tech called.  We went through a few other items first and still no ability send emails. We re-set and changed the IP to static and input my numbers, interestingly now I could send and receive emails but not view the web (both in Chrome and IE).

We reset and went through the exercise again.  This time, I could receive and send emails AND view the web, ONLY now I could NOT access the D-Link set-up in the 826L??  I should point out that we only knew this as this tech was thorough, so each time we changed the parameters in the 826L he had me first check to see if I got internet on multiple (non cached) pages, next to see if I could both send and receive emails, and thirdly he had me close the D-Link set-up window and re-open to see if I could access it.

We reset the 826L and went through the changes once again.  We then checked to make sure that all aspects of email and web were working, and this time we WERE able to access the set-up in the 826L so all is well!  Took about an hour, maybe an hour and half for all this to transpire.

Thanks again.  I hope this helps others who have the same problem in the future.  The key was definitely to confirm my exact specs from the Internet Service Provider and compare them "box by box" to what was in the 826L, but then also to have the right tech who knew enough to check, double check and triple check until we found success.  Without that I would have simply input the numbers and they still would not have worked (I might have done it twice)... he had some tricks up his sleeve to overcome the two-three unexplainable failures before the final reset and re-do that worked.

Thanks for sharing the information and glad they helps you get it figured out. Most people here on the forums use Dynamic WAN IP addresses and not Static. So you are one of the few who have this feature.

I'll add it to my list of items to check for.

Enjoy.

Thanks!

Once again, I cannot say enough good things about the D-Link support on this one.  Seriously, if you go back and read my original post, I bought another product to start (3 times the price and purchased based on huge sensational online reviews) and gave up after they gave up on our issue relatively easily.

The DIR-645 I already had worked so well over the last few years that we decided to grab the DIR-826L, AND NOTE that it was also the most cost effective one on the shelf that would suit our needs.  The moral... overhype and overpriced does not mean overperformance!

Ya I know...I've tested other MFr routers out and each have a place a guess. Price doesn't mean it will work all round for everyone. Just depends on what they have to offer in features and such.

I bought both my 645 and 826L on sale. Have been please with them and all the other ones I have, save a couple maybe.  ::) Work in progress.

Enjoy the 826L.  ;)
