Title: Why So Many Logs Emails?
Post by: johnmsch on April 16, 2014, 04:29:43 PM
I have my DIR-655 (HW:C1/FW:3.01) set to email me the logs every day at noon.  However, I'm getting a lot more emails than the one-per-day.  Sometimes there can be 4-6 of them per day.  What could be causing the router to send so many?

What are your logging settings set for? To collect all or just some info?

Can you post how you configured the email to send logs?
What ISP service do you have?

Comcast is my ISP.

The one thing I don't see in these logs is when the router ignores pings.  The logs in my older DIR-655 (A4/1.37NA) had dozens of them every day.  I have yet to see one in this newer router.

What happens if you de-select System Activity as a test...

Are you still seeing this issue?  ???

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I wanted to give it at least a week to see what happens with the new settings.  As you can see below, after unchecking System Activity, now I'm getting nothing.  As I mentioned previously, with my earlier version of this router, I would see dozens of blocked ping requests ever day.  Seems very strange that I don't see any of them at all.

Ok, what happens if you only select System Activity and leave the others unchecked?

I set mine up, i'm just hoping I can get it to connect to my ISP email servers correctly. I'll post back if I see the same thing.

Just made that change and rebooted.  I'll check it tomorrow.

Been running for about a week with System Activity and Attacks checked.  Getting a lot less information, but I'm still not seeing any blocked ping requests.  Just tried pinging my machine from the office and it doesn't show up in the log.

As I mentioned earlier, my older DIR-655 (A4/1.37NA) showed all the blocked ping requests.  I'm convinced this is a bug in the latest firmware.  How would I go about reporting this to D-Link?

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Is enable WAN Ping Respond enabled or disabled on your router?

Its a Motorola SURFBoard SB6141.  Although there does not appear to be any settings the user can change, I can view the configuration pages.  I don't see anything in there that would ignore pings.

Ya theres nothing on the model that you can configure. I use the SB 6180, same UI. Just different bonding abilities. Just wanted to know also if your modem had a router built it. It doesn't.  ;D
