Title: Data download

i have a DNS 320 which is inoperable.

The quest: Remove the hard drives and place them in a new USB connected device.

The question: Will the data on the hard drives be readable/accessible by Windows XP, ADOBE, etc., et al? Or do i need to convert the existing data from its current form, (Linux I believe) using some other program?

What is the conversion program if one is required?

                      Or

Is the data stored on the hard drives in language such that the data will be readable by plugging in the hard drives?

Simple answer NO if it is windows anything without the necessary IFS or software as mentioned in the sticky.

If your disks are setup as RAID 0 or JBOD be prepared for a lot of work recovering your data.  RAID 0 puts a bit on one disk then a bit on the second disk and so on back and forth so even if you can copy what is there you have the problem of putting it all together - not a simple task because those bits are not necessarily in consecutive order.  JBOD is similar in that a file can be spread over both disks.

Good luck with copying your files - it can be done, we have done it several times for customers.

Another thing, if your disks were setup as RAID 1 then you only need to copy files from one disk because the second disk is exactly the same.

May I ask why your GNS-320 is inoperable?  Some times it is easier to fix a non functioning unit than trying to recover files from a disk.
